Wearing helmets is universally adopted. As it is not feasible to use handholds, as in rock climbing, a pair of ice axes is used to gain purchase on the ice. Usually these are used with leashes which join the climber's wrists to the axes and make it easier to maintain a grip on the ice axe for long periods. Axes, also known as 'tools' have one of two attachments on the end of the axe opposite the pick, it is usual to have one tool fitted with an adze (a wide cutting surface) and one with a hammer for placing pegs and drive-in ice protection. Mountain traverses set new standards
The Tetons have long been producing high quality mountaineering and rock climbing routes. With first ascents becoming hard to find, climbers are turning to mountain traverses to set new standards for moving in the mountains. Over the last few years more and more climbers are turning to the Cathedral and Grand Traverse to test themselves against the mountains and the clock, running up several mountains in a day and free soloing tricky and exposed climbing. For more information see the Traverses and Misc section on the main Climbs page! Good job Evan on ticking off the CT in such stellar style!!!

The Way-Wired Mountaineer is dedicated to bringing the Tetons closer to the wired home. Inspired in part by the Mountain Yodel, a locally produced publication, the Way-Wired Mountaineer sought to engender local support from the climbing community. Then, with this support, produce a grassroots Web-Site that would be unmatched for information on climbing and Skiing in Grand Teton Nation Park. It’s been a long road. The initial excitement that comes with any new project fizzled to the small flakes that can almost be called snow. There was barely enough content to cover a page. Over the years since the WWM started the idea has left me gathering bits and pieces hoping to build up the site at some “future date.” Here we are.

    Ice climbing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ice climbing is the recreational activity of climbing ice formations and frozen waterfalls . Depending on the slope and texture of the ice, different equipment and techniques can be employed by the climber. For example, on flat ice, almost any good hiking or mountaineering boot will usually suffice. On short, low angled slopes, one can use an ice axe to chop steps. For longer and steeper slopes or glacier travel, crampons are pretty much mandatory for a safe climb. Most mountaineers would only consider the last scenario, true ice climbing.

    Ouray Ice Park
The little mountain town of Ouray tapped into a water line running above a gorge, creating an ice park with a dense selection of excellent ice climbs within walking distance of town. The ice park, the longer ice climbs a bit further from town and an overall climber friendly atmosphere make Ouray an ideal ice climbing destination. Mark Su Konrad Lehnert and I headed out to Ouray (16 hour drive, one way) for a week long trip in the end of February of 1999. The routine was unlike that of any other climbing trip I have experienced. We would wake up, watch some TV, eat some breakfast and walk to the ice park from our hotel. A day of climbing in unseasonably warm and sunny conditions was followed by an evening of gorging and a night of TV watching. Five days like that were so surreal, I have trouble believing we actually went on the trip. Conditions and lodging information can be found at the Ouray Ice Park site . I recommend the Ouray Victorian. Most places offer climber discounts, be sure to ask.

Ice climbing is arguably the most rewarding element of mountaineering, challenging mental stamina and physical agility as well as command of technique and equipment. The mountains of northwest Wyoming provide excellent opportunities for winter ice climbs. Though most approaches are several miles, the climbs are outstanding and vary in length and difficulty. From the short and medium length practice routes of Death Canyon in the Tetons, to the committing ice gullies and curtains of Torrey Canyon in the Wind Rivers, Exum offers a wide range of private climbs to suit every ability and aspiration. Heavy snowfall and cold temperatures dictate the use of skis or snowshoes for most approaches, however ice climbs in the Dubois, Wyoming area are accessed on foot. A ratio of one or two clients per guide maximizes safety and flexibility during winter travel. Please contact Exum Headquarters to arrange your trip itinerary and see our current ice climbing rates . If you are interested in spring, summer, and autumn mixed ice and rock climbing, please investigate our
