INTRODUCCIÓN AL IAIDO El Iaido es, hoy por hoy, una disciplina marcial poco conocida en nuestra sociedad, dado que existen muy pocos practicantes y escasos profesores o maestros. Esto hace que incluso los budokas veteranos en otras artes marciales que han visto practicar Iaido, no acierten a situar esta especialidad en el lugar que corresponde. En general se considera al Iaido como algo anacrónico, sin ninguna utilidad práctica en nuestra vertiginosa actualidad regida por las computadoras. No obstante, esta es una concepción errónea. El Iaido, como todas las artes marciales, nos lleva al terreno de la práctica en el que se exige la presencia y colaboración intima del “cuerpo” y del “espíritu”, y desde esa realidad tangible, el adepto inicia un trabajo de perfeccionamiento sobre si mismo. El entrenamiento de Iaido, además de constituir un ejercicio físico que desarrolla sobre todo la agilidad y la coordinación de movimientos, nos va a revelar un sin fin de datos acerca de nuestros limites y posibilidades, amen de ejercitar la capacidad de concentración, la alerta, la disponibilidad y la adaptación instantánea a lo inmediato e imprevisto. ¿Quién se atrevería a afirmar que estas cualidades no tienen aplicación constante en la cambiante vida de cada día?

In Iaido zwingt die Verletzungsgefahr durch das scharfe Schwert das Konzentrationsniveau zu einer sonst schwer erreichbaren Höhe.In den meisten Iai-Schulen im heutigen Japan wird so sehr Wert auf die seelische Übung gelegt, daß allzu häufig die Bewegungen selbst nicht mehr kampfecht sind. Es wird sogar im Sitzen geübt, um den Bewegungsablauf "interessanter" zu machen. In starkem Kontrast dazu steht die in unserem Dojo praktizierte Tanaya-Schule von Iaido. Der Polizeiausbilder von Tokio, Tanaya Masami, lehrte Iai wie in der Zeit der Samurai: Aufrechtstehend, schnell, dynamisch und kampfecht. IAIDO at MAK I aido, is the art of drawing the Japanese sword. It is one of dozens of martial arts samurai would practice. Classes consist of traditional Iaido from the Daito Mushin Ryu, Tameshigeri (cutting practice) and related weapons training with wooden weapons that include bokken (wooden sword), wakisashi (short sword), tanto (dagger), nito-ryu (two swords), jo (short staff), and all variations against one another. All steel blades used in Iaido are shinken (true, hand-forged Japanese swords). Replica or homemade swords are not permitted. Modern hand-forged blades must be approved by Sensei. The History of Daito Mushin Ryu G raziano Sensei trained in Fusashima, Japan in the early 1960's under Takashi Kazumi Sensei in the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. This style traces back to the Tokugawa shogunate (early 1600's) when the Yagyu family served as sword instructors to the Shogun and his family. When Graziano Sensei lived in Michigan, he studied the Muso Shinden Ryu (another very old style) under Masaki Shibata Sensei. Later, Graziano Sensei studied under Sadeo Kotaka Sensei in Ohio. Graziano Sensei found important elements in each of these styles. When he decided to pass on his knowledge of the sword to his students in Florida, he chose to include techniques from all of these styles. Because the merged style was not true to any one style, it would have been disrespectful to have used his Sensei's style names for this new style. What is Iai ? Iai-Do is an offshoot of Kendo, a traditional Martial Art of Japan. Kendo, through its origin lay in fighting by use of the real sword, nowadays is played between two contestants with bamboo sticks (Shinai) whereas Iai is played singly with either the real sword or an imitation one. Now, what is Iai then? Iai is an art of self defence that you draw the sword immediately against an enemy's sudden attack to win at the very moment when the sword leaves the sheath. It was initiated about four hundred years ago and has been followed by many kendo players ever since. Its training and practice is very hard; because the purpose of Iai is to ultimately master the secret to win over your enemy without drawing the sword, or to spiritually conquer your opponent with your sword left in the sheath; that is you may settle problems without resorting to arms. Iai was initiated as a martial art to win at the very moment when the sword leaves the sheath, taking a posture to respond promptly against the enemy's sudden attack. Iai-Do and Kendo are just like the two wheels of a car, being so closely related and having been lasting together through the long history of Japan's martial arts.
