63. Haggis Hurling
The World Haggis hurling Championships have taken off again backed by McKean Foods the official sponsors of this long overdue event.
http://www.scottishhaggis.co.uk/haggis_hurling.htm
The World Haggis Hurling Championships have taken off again backed by McKean Foods - the official sponsors of this long overdue event. The tradition of Haggis Hurling dates back to early Scottish Clan Gatherings, where the women folk would toss a haggis across a stream to their husbands, who would catch the haggis in their kilts. In the modern version a haggis is hurled for distance and accuracy from atop a platform (usually a whisky barrel). Two variations on the tradition have developed, one enacted at festivals, the other a professional sport. It is due to be presented as a demonstration sport at the 2004 Olympics!! Next The Scottish heats took place at the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games earlier this month. North America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand heats will follow soon in readiness for the World Championship next summer. The present World Record for Haggis Hurling has been held by Alan Pettigrew for over 18 years. Hardly surprising if you consider he threw a 1lb 8oz haggis an astonishing 180' 10'' on the island of Inchmurrin on Loch Lomond in August 1984. Click on the thumbnail for a full size picture of Alan "tossing the caber" - not, by the looks of it, someone you would want to meet on a dark night! Alan is still very much in demand for various media events through his hurling prowess. He may be 20 years older since that historic hurl but we don't see him giving up the title without a fight. Newcomers be warned!

SARSFIELDS HURLING CLUB Welcome to the Web site of one of the oldest hurling clubs in Cork. Steeped in tradition and located in the barony of Imokilly, the club boasts such famous hurling names as Micka Brennan, Alan Lotty, Teddy McCarthy, Paddy Barry and Liam Dowling. These wore the colours of Cork with pride and distinction. The club has a well organised underage infrastructure, with street leagues for age groups of six years and up. Teams compete in the East Cork championships and have been particularly successful in the recent Feile U-14 competitions. Our sister club, the Glanmire football club also caters for the community and has their web page at http://welcome.to/glanmiregaa/ and gives details on who to contact, video clips of Tadhgy Murphy beating the Kingdom in 1983 and the players involved. Hurling, Ireland
Hurling isn't what the Irish do when they've had too much Guinness (well, not always). It's actually a mad kind of aerial hockey invented to make the English feel embarrassed about tiggy-touchwood soccer. If you haven't had the twisted pleasure of seeing this example of man's inhumanity to man, head to the Emerald Isle - but keep your head down. This 15-century-old activity pulls no punches. A hurling match is perhaps the fastest spectator sport in the world (with only ice hockey matching it for up-close frenzy). From a distance it resembles a roaming pack-fight between men with thin pale legs and names like Liam and Sean. At ground level it's much more frightening, a kind of 15-a-side escape from the asylum. Hurling is rapid, breakneck and rambunctious. The game moves too fast for the novice to understand anything but the most basic rules, but you can start by imagining an egg-and-spoon race with a pack of enormous angry stick-wielding roosters charging the leader. The aim is to hurtle a pellet-hard ball called a sliotar into goals using a stick with a paddle at its end ( hurley ). The players balance the sliotar on their hurley and then run, hit or bounce it forward, sometimes with all limbs attached.
