Welcome Thank you for your interest in ballistic root vegetables. This is the home of the Mangold Hurling Association, whose goals are to make the traditional Somerset sport of Mangold Hurling known to a wider public and to encourage others to join this happy band of Hurlers. What healthier way could there be to take exercise and make new friends at the same time?
What is Mangold Hurling? Put simply, Mangold Hurling is the sport of throwing – or more accurately pitching – the mangold-wurzel. It requires skill, strength and cunning. Mangold Hurling is usually performed during October each year.
And What is a Mangold-Wurzel? The mangold-wurzel (or mangel- wurzel) is a vegetable of the beet family, grown mainly as a fodder crop. More information will be found on The Mangold page. A local Club chairman preparing the Norman with the special cutting tool. See Rules for further information. We hope you enjoy finding out about Mangold Hurling and that you will be inspired to have a go yourself. But remember, the mangold can be a lethal weapon in inexperienced hands. We urge you to seek expert tuition before “going solo”. The Mangold Hurling Association cannot be held responsible for any vegetable-related injuries incurred in pursuit of this sport.

Collisions in Hurling
By Shannon Nelson
There are several kinds of collisions that take place on the pitch in a game of Hurling. Therefore, collisions and momentum are a big part of the Physics of the game.
Furthermore, in an inelastic collision, which this is, energy is not conserved. This means that the the kinetic energy of the final system is less than that of the initial conditions. Energy can be given off in heat, light, and sound. In a collision between hurley and sliotar, the most probable causes of energy being lost are the sound they make on contact, and possibly some heat from the friction between them when they hit.
Other collisions that may occur are hurley on body, ball on body, body on body, and ball or body on ground. All of these collisions are similar in that momentum will be conserved and some energy will be lost. As you can see, Hurling is full of collisions and, therefore, full of Physics!

Weekend Hurling Championship previews
Thursday, May 13 2004 10:47 The wizards of the small ball game swing into action on Sunday next, with the Clare v Waterford Munster encounter the pick of the bunch. A week after losing the League final, Waterford are back in action and must focus their minds on a completely different objective. Clare await them this time and one wonders what effect if any the defeat to Galway will have on their approach. Waterford did not perform last Sunday and that is being kind to them, a similar display and they will be wiped out. Clare are back in earnest, Anthony Daly has gone down this way before, Frank and Brian Lohan are at opposite ends and Ollie Baker is hungry for more glory. Verdict Clare The other tie down south sees defending champions Cork in first round action against Kerry. Lambs to the slaughter, that about sums up the fate awaiting Kerry, that is unless Cork show some sympathy. Kerry hammered by Westmeath who were in turn annilhilated by Down. Possibly an opportunity for Donal O'Grady to try out some fringe players or even give Brian Corcoran a chance to display his fitness.

The catapult was an ancient siege machine that could hurl heavy objects or shoot arrows with great force and for considerable distances. Some catapults could throw stones weighing as much as 350 pounds for distances greater than 300 feet. The Greek Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse, who was looking to develop a new type of weapon, invented the catapult about 400 BCE. Thereafter, it became a key weapon in warfare and remained so up through mediaeval times. Two major catapults evolved from Dionysius's invention: the double-armed machine, or ballista, used for shooting arrows, and the single-armed catapult designed for hurling large objects. Although the Romans added wheels to both types of catapult for maneuverability, very little in the design of the machine changed. The reconstruction shown here is of a single-armed stone-hurling catapult, approximately two feet long and one-and-a-half feet tall. Its hurling arm is driven by a cocked, winch-pulled cord.

E-mail: montreal_gaa@yahoo.com Montreal Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was established in 1948 in order to promote Ireland’s two most popular national sports, Gaelic football and Hurling to the community of Montreal. The association is also known as the Montreal Shamrocks Hurling and Football club.
Gaelic football is an Irish field game similar to Australian Rules football and can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby. Hurling is a spectacular field game somewhat similar to hockey, in that it is played with a small ball (sliothar) and a curved wooden stick (hurley or caman). It is Europe's oldest field game.
Montreal GAA also organises social events including live satellite television coverage of the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship games every Sunday morning during the summer months.
