The Summer Alternative from Ireland:
Gaelic Games: Hurling and Gaelic Football
gaelic football hurling links Have you ever wondered how football (soccer) would look like without offside?
Then try to watch the spectacular Gaelic games Hurling and Gaelic Football which set their highlights just when football (soccer) takes its time out: in the European summer. Although the two sports are also played in clubs, the highlight is the yearly All Ireland Championships for the 33 county selections.
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (which is Northern Ireland). Those are divided again into an unequal number of counties (Connacht 6, Leinster 12 (incl. Dublin), Munster 6, Ulster 9).
First the provinces determine their champions, then those play off the All Ireland Championship.
Those county rivalries are also a journey into the past for football fans, as passion more than money characterizes the games. Both sports are said to be very old, the championships in today's form more than 100 years.

University of Limerick Fitzgibbon Cup Champions 2002. Keep an eye on the notice board for training times. The Fitzgibbon Cup has finally arrived back in Limerick after an eight year gap. It is a great achievement and is in no small way due to the work put in by Ollie Moran since last November and more recently the pyschological guru also from Ahane, Eamon Meskill. Our thanks must also go to David Daly and Ger who have looked after the club over the twelve months and the University who helped to put us up in Galway for the weekend and our sponsors have been brilliant. On behalf of the Hurling Club I would to take this opportunity to welcome all the new freshers into the college. Finally I want to take this opportunity to wish all final year students the best of luck in the coming semesters and hope that those in their final year may enjoy it as much as the freshers will UL Hurling Club.

The Game of Hurling.
Hurling is one of the fastest and most skilful field games in the world. It is an ancient Gaelic sport, played long before the coming of Christianity. The earliest written record of the game is contained in the Brehon Laws of the fifth century. The first great hurling hero was Setanta whose legendary adventures are known to most Irish children. The game was banned by the Statutes of Kilkenny because of its popularity with the Normans. The 18th century was known as the 'golden age' of hurling. Landlords promoted the game; inter-barony and inter-county games were played. These matches were very well organised; teams lined out in set positions (21 a-side) and the behaviour of each player was controlled by a strict code of honour. Events from 1790 to 1800 caused the gentry to withdraw their support for the game of hurling. This, together with the effects of the Great Famine, severely damaged the development of the game. A successful revival of hurling commenced in 1884 with the founding of the G.A.A. The Gaelic games are organised on a local level - the parish being the basic unit of organisation. Hence, the national games have become interwined with community spirit and local pride.

About hurling. hurling evolved as a way to train warriors for battle, and is the oldest Irish sport, actually predating Christianity.
http://www.hurling.net/hurling.html
About Hurling
Hurling is the national sport of Ireland, and is played today on many levels all over Ireland as well as in several other countries, including Australia, the United States, and even Japan. Hurling evolved as a way to train warriors for battle, and is the oldest Irish sport, actually pre-dating Christianity. Arguably the fastest field sport in the world, hurling is similar in many ways to field hockey and soccer. Players use a curved ash stick (the hurley or cumman) to hit, pass, pick up, and carry the ball (the sliothar) along the field of play. The average hurley is approximately 36 inches long, and has a long slender handle which widens out at the end to a maximum width of 6 inches. This wider end is called the bas, and this is where the ball is struck by or balanced on the hurley. The sliothar is only 3 inches in diameter and weighs about a quarter of a pound. The sliothar has an outer leather cover with raised seams, which surrounds a cork core, making the ball very hard and somewhat elastic. The sliothar can be carried in the hand for up to four steps, or indefinitely on the end of the hurley. (This is called soloing.) A player can only take the sliothar into their hand twice before they must either pass it or hit it away. The sliothar can be passed by kicking it, hitting it with the hurley, or by passing it with the hand, which is done by hitting the sliothar with an open palm. The sliothar can be struck with the hurley while in the air or on the ground. A player may not pick the sliothar up off the ground with their hands, nor may they throw the sliothar.

This is to welcome all comers to the Ballinasloe Hurling Club's website and to say that we are all very proud of the great work our officers and members at all levels are doing to promote our national games. Long may it continue and may their efforts bear fruit and go from strength to strength in the future.
    Chairman's Address

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Ballinasloe Hurling Club website. Hurling has been played in Ballinasloe since before the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded. Many G.A.A.experts say some of the first meetings before the foundation of the G.A.A. were actually held in Ballinasloe. The Club was founded sometime in the early 1900's and this year, 2001, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our first Senior Championship win.
Alot of effort has been put into underage hurling and regular coaching and skills training is carried out in our local schools almost daily. This is already paying off having captured two under age trophies last year and two more this year. We hope to develop a new club grounds and club house in the next few years in association with the local Gaelic Football club, St. Grellans and the camogie club.
The future looks very bright for Ballinasloe hurling with a lot of young players coming up through the ranks. We thank you all for your support in the past and hope you will continue to support our club in the future.
