Summary of Rules for the Human Powered Vehicle Competition Sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
ASME sponsors the Human Powered Vehicle Competition in hopes of finding a design that can be used for everyday activities ranging from commuting to and from work to going to the grocery store. Senior engineering students can use this competition for their capstone project and with their efforts design and construct a fast, sleek, and safe vehicle capable of road use.          The competition includes three classes of vehicles.
  • Single Rider - operated and powered by a single individual Multi-rider - operated and powered by two or more individuals Utility - vehicle designed for every-day transportation for such activities as commuting to work or school, shopping trips, and general transportation
Single Rider and Multi-rider vehicles will participate in three events: Design, Sprint, and Endurance. Utility vehicles will participate in two events: Design and Utility Endurance.   Fairing
All vehicles in all classes of competition are required to have a full or partial aerodynamic fairing. This fairing must cover 1/3 of the frontal area of the vehicle and be built such that it clearly shows the provided number assigned to the vehicle and ASME logo. The number and logo must be displayed on every fairing in front of the rider and must be visible from both sides of the vehicle.

13th Annual Human Powered Ice Vehicle World Championship Races
Saturday, January 24th 2004
St. Thomas Academy has offered the use of Rogers Lake in Mendota Heights MN (just south of St Paul)
We will have access to St Thomas' warming house, toilets and a cafeteria for an after race awards ceremony/potluck.
I've received comments that a potluck wouldn't work for some people. Perhaps a giant Pizza Hut order. Map Aerial view Events and Rules New 01-12-04 Pictures, Results and Report from the 2003 Ice Races October 2003 Meeting Report and Photos have been posted. New 11-16-03

Rides; Since 2001, most MnHPVA rides are scheduled on short notice and posted to members of the RecumbentsMN eMail list. We find that we get more people willing to lead rides this way, with rides nearly every week. We usually get a better turnout than when the rides were scheduled months in advance. Major rides, like the Spring and Fall rides, Lance's Corn Roast and the Harvest Moon ride will continue to be placed on the "Coming Events" page well in advance. 12th Annual Human Powered Ice Vehicle World Championship Races
Saturday January 25th, had a huge turnout. Please send me any photos that I can use for a web page for the event.

Human-Powered Vehicle Student Project
The Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Competition is an annual contest sponsored by ASME. In it, teams from schools within ASME's Region IX, which includes California, Nevada, and Hawaii, design, manufacture, and race vehicles. The designs are judged through oral presentation, a sprint race, and a road race, using the criteria of design innovation, safety, and performance. Here is the 1999 competition vehicle The 1995 team of six, led by Dave Auble, had a most exciting experience in San Diego participating in the competition, which was held in late April. Our unique design featured a pendulum-style pedaling system and a prone riding position. The competition provided an excellent opportunity to take engineering ideas from paper to a finished product, including the testing and presentation. Some added benefits of the experience were the opportunity to work as a team and the chance to hang out in San Diego! Anyone interested in joining the team should contact one of the ASME Student Chapter officers. Go to ASME page.

ASME NEWS I ntermittent showers couldn't dampen the spirits of the 23 student teams taking part in ASME's Human Powered Vehicle Competition, the annual event in which engineering students exhibit and race the aerodynamically enhanced bicycles they have designed. The competition took place during early May at California State University-Chico. An inside look at Cal Poly's Apocalypse, the winner of the single-rider endurance event. Colorado State University took first place overall in the single-rider vehicle category with its entry Hayate. UC-Berkeley placed first in the two-rider, tandem vehicle category with its vehicle, Bearacuda. And the University of Colorado-Denver finished first overall in the utility vehicle category, which tested a vehicle's practical use, with its entry, Snoopy's Racer. San Joaquin Delta College came in second overall in the single-rider vehicle division with its vehicle, Pops, while Chico State University placed third overall in the single-rider class with Caf-Fiend. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas took second and third place overall in the tandem vehicle class with its two entries, Magic Box and Purgatory Bus, respectively. Meanwhile, Brigham Young University came in second overall in the utility vehicle division with Human Octane, and San Diego State University finished third overall with Full Monti.
