This is the first comprehensive book ever written about human-powered vehicles (HPVs). Filled with 180 impressive photographs, detailed drawings, and tables, Human-Powered Vehicles explains the history of HPVs, offers practical insights into their design, and considers future possibilities of human-powered travel. Allan V. Abbott and David Gordon Wilson, HPV designers and former presidents of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association, have assembled a list of contributors representing a who's who of leaders in human-powered vehicles. They review the development of human-powered water, land, and air vehicles, focusing on the innovations that have significantly improved performance in recent years. Part I describes early applications of human power to machines, giving examples of every major type of mechanism used to harness human power. It also explains relevant exercise physiology and biomechanical principles as they relate to the human engine.

Pedal Power: Spinning for the Future at CCAT
By Ben Erickson Pedal power energy has been in use since the nineteenth century. Pedal power uses the most powerful muscles in the body: the quads, hamstrings, and calves. When pedaling in a circular motion at sixty to eighty revolutions per minute, with the use of toe clips, almost every muscle in the human legs can be used to make energy. Ninety-five percent of the exertion put into pedal power is converted into energy. The average rider at a continuous road speed of twelve miles per hour can produce a quarter horsepower, or enough energy to light two, one hundred-watt light bulbs (Wilson 1977). The average, fit, adult rider can produce only 75 watts or 1/10hp when
cycling at a continuous 12mph.

Decavitator Human-Powered Hydrofoil
Check out the videos , brush up with the hydrofoil basics , or go to the table of contents for a complete listing of documentation. Please see the reading list for aero/hydro dynamics references. On 27 October 1991, Mark Drela pedalled the human-powered hydrofoil, Decavitator , to a world-record speed of 18.5 knots (9.53 meters/second) over a 100 meter race course on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. In the spring of 1993 the Decavitator team was awarded the DuPont prize for the fastest human-powered water craft. This prize was to be awarded to the first team to break 20 knots over a 100 meter course, or to the team with the fastest speed on record as of 31 December 1992. A Little Background Information... The trek to the world record flight began in 1988 as Daedalus team members Marc Schafer and Bryan Sullivan returned from Greece. At that time they decided to build a human-powered vehicle (HPV) that an armchair athlete could operate. Marc initiated a student-run project (under MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program - UROP) with funding from the MIT SeaGrant program. When the $25 000 DuPont Prize was announced in 1989, the goals of the project changed and speed became the primary objective. For the rest of the story, see the history page.

Human-Powered Vehicles > Customer Review #1: Factual and down-to earth: excellent reference book

For inventors and innovators, this book contains everything needed to answer detailed preliminary questions on the main aspects of human power and its application on land, air and sea. The only drawback was that the section on flying was a little short and the section on cycling a little long, but the cycling stats fed into the flying machines anyway so no real loss. Plenty of charts, stats, references on air and water resistance, human horsepower, peak performance issues, actual test results. Very impressive collection of information, well worth the price.

Bike Cult: The Ultimate Guide to Human-Powered Vehicles > Customer Review #1: "Cult?"Seems Normal To Me!

What a great book! At time of its release in 1995, "Bike Cult" was the first attempt at an encyclopaedia of cycling. This fat book (570 rather dense pages) covers the history of the bicycle its high-performance engine (that is, the human body), the bicycle as transportation and, lastly, the culture of the bicycle and the effect it has had on the human spirit. There have been some changes in bicycle technology since 1995, and of course the tables of race winners is out of date, but "Bike Cult" remains a fascinating look into the origins and use of "the perfect machine." I enjoyed the lovingly described history, which not only went over the bicycle as a whole but devotes sections to individual parts of the bike, such as handlebars and seats, and the whole question of how a bicycle is steered. It is a mad compendium of information: there is a list of international names for bicycles and related items on page 99, and we learn that the Hawaiian word for bicycle is kaa paikikala, while in Uruguay it is known as a chiba.

Princeton University Human-Powered Vehicles. By the time students left the second session of MAE 199 this fall, they were sweating.
That wasn't because they had spent the last couple hours steeped in problems of physics, fluid dynamics and materials science. It had more to do with sitting on a stationary bicycle and pedaling madly while talking about physics, fluid dynamics and materials science.
That's the way it is in Barrie Royce's Human-Powered Vehicles, a class in which the bicycle is as much a teaching tool as the blackboard. The course explores the machines humans have devised to leverage their own strength and propel themselves faster and farther than their own two feet could carry them. It ranges from dugout canoes to human-powered airplanes but focuses on the bicycle.
"The idea is to get students to think about science and engineering as something that's part of real life," says Royce, who is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. More...

Human-Powered Vehicles and the Race Across America:
There's More to it than Speed By Chris Kostman Originally published in VeloNews, September 8, 1989
There's more to bike racing than speed, and this year's first ever human-powered vehicle four-man relay division of the annual transcontinental Race Across America proved this quite dramatically. The event was originally the brainchild of Bicycling Magazine, but when a plethora of corporate-sponsored teams didn't appear out of the woodworks to enter, Bicycling withdrew and the folks at the Race Across America and its parent the Ultra-Marathon Cycling Association decided to stage the event regardless of field size or depth. Much like the recent trans-Australia solar-powered car race, this event was designed to encourage and foster exciting new innovations in transportation technology. The focus was definitely on the bike and not on the athlete propelling it. The race began at 3 pm Eastern time and immediately headed out across the hot and windy Mojave desert. Riding the interstates and with hellatious tailwinds, Easy Racer and Lightning were cruising at speeds of up to and over 60 miles per hour. One hundred miles into the race, the route took an abrupt 90 degree left turn and the bikes were now pummeled with the same hellatious wind to their side. The more adaptable Lightning simply peeled back its lycra body to make less of a wind block, while the Easy Racer was buffeted back and forth furiously until finally thrown into a ditch with Shermer at the helm. Race rules required that the identical fairing and structure of the HPV be used for the entire race, thus Lightning was able to utilize its adjustable lycra body as conditions dictated, while Easy Racer was stuck with its faster but more ungainly and unmodifiable Kevlar body.
