The Flying Furniture recumbent designs have evolved over the last several years to equal the best in the world. They have been raced at Human Powered Vehicle World Speed Championships and tackled the tough 200km Audax Alpine Classic in Bright, Victoria which climbs four mountains! They have been proven safe, stable and easy to ride on even the wettest and most horrible of days in the rough and tumble of Sydney's traffic and on extended tours to remote places (Three riders cycled 2500km across Australia's outback on Flying Furniture bikes during August 2000 and one is currently being cycled 7000km across Canada). Flying Furniture designs are what recumbent bikes should be and fulfill the comfort, speed and efficiency potential of this "easy rider" design! You will almost certainly be faster than you are now while riding Flying Furniture bikes. The best designed and fastest bikes in the world are available from
Flying Furniture Cycles in Australia!

The Ground Hugger XR2 recumbent bicycle was recently developed as an in-house project. It takes the idea of lifestyle impacts on energy demand a bit farther. We’ve seen how a sort of "purist" attitude can become a mindset and get people turned on to certain activities. I n the name of fitness, people run until they drop from exhaustion with no actual destination in mind. And smart, educated folks like us do manual labor, like weightlifting and rowing stationary machines, without actually accomplishing anything, other than feeling and looking better. Today, cycling enthusiasts pay $2,000 or more for high-tech bicycles that provide little real additional benefit in actual performance - once you break the $1000-dollar price barrier. Most of the appeal has to do with the pleasure of enjoying fine craftsmanship and beautiful design, and getting turned on to a sort of mental image of what it means to be part of an elite group - to sort of wear the image. So with the right practical support and innovative product design, it’s easy to envision that the idea of combining fresh-air fitness with the need to go somewhere could become the "in" thing to do. It just wouldn’t be cool anymore to use a ton of hardware to travel three miles to work. These are mindset challenges that can be influenced by product design and marketing messages.

Time: 8:30 - 18:00
Location: Aula Interlaken, Interlaken, Switzerland
See www.futurebike.ch for details.
Questions concerning the seminar are invited at: andreas.fuchs@bluewin.ch
Topics
In the Health and Power-block, Dr. Allan V. Abbott, USA, founding president of the IHPVA, talks about health benefits of various types of exercise. Then, Zamparo, Capelli and Cencigh, University of Udine, Italy, discuss the first measurements of the efficiency of a four wheel human powered recumbent vehicle and the energy cost riding it. Finally, Dr. Carl Georg Rasmussen, Leitra ApS, Denmark, tells the audience who needs power assistance and who doesn't!
Power for assists may come from Combustion: Based on his longtime experience with his two-stroke-internal combustion engine-assist, John Tetz, USA, derives the critical upper limits for the mass of small up-hill assist-units. Dr. Israel Urieli and Andy Ross, USA, explain how to use an external combustion Stirling-engine range extender to propel an electrically assisted hpv.
The chapter on Marketing and Transportation deals with how to bring these vehicles onto the street: Ed Benjamin (Idaho, USA) describes factors that influence sales of Pedelecs (pedal-electric bicycles) in the US market. German Eslava from cabbike (Germany and Italy) reports the experiences with assisted human powered vehicles in the European Union supported field test in Modena, Italy. Dr. Stefan Gloger, Darmstadt, Germany, discusses the criteria that influence the selection of traffic-modes by individuals.

Some of the (more successful) hpvs that I have built (Israel Urieli)
I bought my first touring bicycle as a 50th birthday present to myself and discovered that I was above the age that I could contort my body to that ridiculous position, and maintain it on a long tour. I suffered wrist pain, lower back pain, "tokhes" pain (Yiddish for "backside"). I subsequently tried Moulton bicycles, which were then the only touring bikes available with front and rear suspension, but with no relief. There seems to be a fundamental incompatibilty between the seat of a regular upright bike and the human anatomy. I then discovered recumbents, but was put off by the unastheaticly long chain and lack of portability of all the available recumbent designs. It seemed ridiculous to me that one would need a van to transport a recumbent to a point of departure, so I decided to design my own. I went to visit the guru - Don Harse , and threw myself at his feet "Teach me" was all that I could utter, and he did. Within a few months I had built my first recumbent design, posthumously named " Legbreaker 1 " (1993). Spending a sobering 6 months on crutches I decided to discontinue that series and start the Grasshopper series.

I get to work daily on a bicycle, but everybody who spends time in the bicycle saddle begins to think if there might be a way to improve upon the old steed: make it more comfortable, safer to ride in traffic, more efficient, etc. Below are some alternatives I have dreamed up and tried to turn into reality.

Like the other vehicles shown here, it started as an experimental project using the frame of the 'rowing' bike you see below, but fitted with pedals. The aim was to test some ideas about FWD design, in particular the so-called "fixed bottom bracket" variety in which the chain twists as the steering is turned. It introduced some fascinating design parameters that challenge one's ingenuity. In some places it seems the wind always blows... Recumbent cycles can easily be fitted with a streamlined fairing that offers potential advantages, but also disadvantages, in strong winds.

DFRC Photo # Photo Date Image Description Daedalus Photo Collection Contact Sheet Daedalus Project's Light Eagle - Human powered aircraft March 7, 1988 Daedalus - Last Dryden flight Additional Information These unique aircraft were designed and constructed by a group of students, professors, and alumni of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology within the context of the Daedalus project. The construction of the Light Eagle and Daedalus aircraft was funded primarily by the Anheuser Busch and United Technologies Corporations, respectively, with additional support from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, MIT, and a number of other sponsors. To celebrate the Greek myth of Daedalus, the man who constructed wings of wax and feathers to escape King Minos, the Daedalus project began with the goal of designing, building and testing a human-powered aircraft that could fly the mythical distance, 115 km. To achieve this goal, three aircraft were constructed. The Light Eagle was the prototype aircraft, weighing 92 pounds. On January 22, 1987, it set a closed course distance record of 59 km, which still stands. Also in January of 1987, the Light Eagle was powered by Lois McCallin to set the straight distance, the distance around a closed circuit, and the duration world records for the female division in human powered vehicles.

2004 Human Powered Vehicles - Specifications Entrants will design, build and compete, using a vehicle powered solely by human power. Design requirements include a maximum length of two point seven (2.7) metres, single seat and minimum of three wheels. The rules are similar to those for the RACV ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH and the AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL PEDAL PRIX vehicles to allow vehicles from other events to enter. Entrants must: n design and build a vehicle “from a clean sheet” n develop or adapt a vehicle from an existing design n liaise with local industry or community groups to design and build a machine. n commercially designed vehicles acceptable, however the spirit of the event encourages school based design and construction. The school Principal must sign a declaration indicating the level of involvement in the design and construction by the students. Vehicles that don't comply fully to the specifications will be accepted at the scrutineer’s discretion, except in regards to safety No vehicle will be allowed to start the event until it has passed scrutineering. All entrants will be required to participate in a 24-hour marathon trial event (sub-junior 16 hour) on the Wonthaggi Grand Prix circuit through the Wonthaggi Recreational Reserve (including an approximate twelve-hour lights-on period).

    8. May 1999. Tomi Engel Riding my MTB on the 25 km trip to university was never much fun and the pain in my bottom, back and neck made me stay at home whenever possible. Wearing padded shorts did not cure the disease and it made me feel like being some kind of racing nerd. Besides that the shorts have never been really comfortable either. I knew about recumbents for a long time before I actually realized what the whole thing is about. It was Oliver Zechlin, showing me his new recumbent made by Challenge and poisoning me with his HPV CDROM picture collection, who gave me the final kick back in 1996 to get hooked on HPVs
The HPV 1996 CDROM Over the following years I have started to build my own customized recumbent bike, which was derived from - at least in my opinion - one of the coolest recumbent designs up to now: The Greenmachine

Barrie Royce (r) with Ben Wukasch '03 (back), Brent Bollman '03 (l) and Robert Wuertz '02 (Photo by Denise Applewhite) "The idea is to get students to think about science and engineering as part of real life"
By Steven Schultz By the time students left the second session of MAE 199 this fall, they were sweating. That wasn't because they had spent the last couple hours steeped in problems of physics, fluid dynamics and materials science. It had more to do with sitting on a stationary bicycle and pedaling madly while talking about physics, fluid dynamics and materials science. That's the way it is in Barrie Royce's Human-Powered Vehicles, a class in which the bicycle is as much a teaching tool as the blackboard. The course explores the machines humans have devised to leverage their own strength and propel themselves faster and farther than their own two feet could carry them. It ranges from dugout canoes to human-powered airplanes but focuses on the bicycle. "The idea is to get students to think about science and engineering as something that's part of real life," says Royce, who is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Chronology of the Growth of Bicycling
by David Mozer Note: Michael Angelo is credit with drawing the first diagrams of a bicycle. The answer to the question of who fabricated the first bike depends upon who you ask; the French claim it was a Frenchman and Americans often claim that it was an American. Date Development Giovanni Fontana built the first human powered land vehicle it had four wheels and used an endless rope connected via gears to the wheels. Comte de Sicrac built a hobby horse bike - a hobby horse with two wheels instead of a rocker. Hobby Horse Bicycle: Two wheels the same size added to essentially a modified hobby horse. The alignment of the front wheel is fixed. The are no peddles so the bike propelled by pushing off with your feet and the bike was steered by leaning. It was made entirely of wood. A model, invented by Baron von Drais, also known as a Draisienne and "dandy horse", had a steerable front wheel. This enjoyed a short lived popularity as a fad, not being practical for transportation in any other place than a well maintained pathway such as in a park or garden.
Kirkpatric Mcmillan, a Scottish blacksmith adapted a treadle-type pedals to a bicycle..
