Human Powered Vehicle (HPV's) Designs
(Also known as Recumbent Bicycles) Ramblings : I remember the first recumbents I saw, It was a tape of a race shown on television (I think ESPN or one of those sports channels) when I was a teenager, and ever since then I've been interested in the design, building and racing of recumbents. I've sketched quite a few others, but here are the only ones I thought were worth mentioning and building... The Pilot This was my first (thus the name Pilot) shot at designing a recumbent bicycle, I had started this design when I was enrolled as a Mechanical Drafting Co-op Student through the company that I presently work for. This was to be my final semester design project. I later learned that our projects had to be a team effort, so not wanting to let my work go to waste I kept the design and planned to finished it at a later time (the team project ended up to be a two wheel drive motorcycle, got a good grade too). This is actually the third and final version, the design had originally started out as a composite framed (non leaning) Trike but over time (a very long time I might add) it evolved into the Lean Steer Trike you see here. ( Which I hope to Finish Constructing this Summer - 1999
(Click on the Graphic for more Info and additional Images) The Outback This is my version of what I would want to have in a S.U.R. (sport utility recumbent). The name for this design came about because of the location of my house. I have a greenbelt area that runs behind my home that has a nature trail which runs through it, this is where I plan on riding this Recumbent "Outback' of my house. While working with my father on a pedal car project for my son, we ended up with a couple of child's bicycle frames left over without any wheels, so not to let them go to waste, I've come up with this design. I hope to start construction on it soon after the trike is completed.....

I would like to assemble a team of students to research and develop a variety of ALTERNATE BICYCLE DESIGNS. Students engaged in these projects will design and fabricate high efficiency upright/prone/recumbent bicycles. The goal of this activity is to explore the human factors, aerodynamics and safety advantages of alternate bicycle design, as well as investigate alternative materials for use in prototype construction. The bicycles will incorporate full or partial fairing, and adhere to either the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) regulations for possible competition in the IHPVA speed championships, or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Human Powered Vehicle Challenge. Team requirements: 2 to 3 - MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS with mechanisms and fluids experiences. - - drop me a line!

Australian National Pedal Prix The Australian National Pedal Prix is a competition where teams design and construct a human powered vehicle (HPV) and test it for a 24-hour period under race conditions. The HPV is mechanically similar to a bicycle - the driver sits in a seat and uses pedals to move it along. In addition, there are some hybrid vehicles in the competition, which also contain an alternate power source, such as an internal combustion engine or a solar powered electrical engine. The HPV isdriven on a bitumized road surface, and is seen as a viable form of transport for people seeking a healthy lifestyle. Judges' answers to Frequently Asked Questions
HPV stands for Human Powered Vehicle. Human Powered Vehicles are aerodynamic, highly engineered vehicles that may be for use on land, in the water or the air. Some land-based HPV's have achieved speeds of over 60 mph. After all, this is the age of computers. The point of the competition is the elegance and ingenuity of the design, including presentation, practicality and safety. All areas of engineering problem-solving are addressed - it's not as simple as it appears to design and build these vehicles. And the competition itself is great fun for the team. The vehicles are judged on design, safety and performance. The first stage of the competition is the preparation of a comprehensive design report. The second part of the competition includes design presentation and performance events, held over a weekend where
