It's a game we can play in the backyard; it rarely raises a sweat; and we can quaff lemonade and carry on a conversation while we play. Start young kids off with inexpensive plastic or rubber shoes, which are easier to throw and less of a hazard to players (and spectators). By age 10, most kids are able to pitch the standard 2 1/2-pound horseshoes. The iron stakes should be set 40 feet apart, though you can move them closer depending on the age and throwing skills of your kids. Drive each stake in so it extends 14 inches and leans in (toward the other stake) 3 inches off vertical. Players start at one stake and pitch two shoes each before moving to the other stake. In doubles, partners split up and pitch from opposing stakes. One point is awarded to the player with the closest shoe to the stake, or two points if both shoes are closer than the opponent's shoes. Ringers (when the shoe hooks the stake) count for three points, but ringers by each player on the same turn cancel each other out.
