Welcome to The Farrier and Hoofcare Resource Center,
your one-stop source for farriery information and supplies.
We don't want to sound immodest, (well, OK, maybe just a little...), but we do have two claims to fame:
  • This is the largest equine-related site on the World Wide Web Every one of the 65,000+ pages in this site is devoted to one thing: Farriery and Hoofcare.
  • Together with the other sites in the International Equine Resource Center, Anvil Magazine and The Horseman's Advisor, we present you with over 100,000 pages of farrier, hoofcare, and equine health related material.
You probably noticed the ear icon to the left. If you have RealPlayer installed on your computer, you'll be able to play audio clips whenever you see one of those ear icons. RealPlayer plays streaming audio (and video) clips, which means you can hear them play as they are sent to your computer in real time. You don't have to wait for the clip to finish downloading! If you don't have RealPlayer, don't worry. Just click right here and you'll be taken to the download page.

    Horseshoes on the Net
In response to popular request, I've put together a brief description of the game of horseshoes for those interested in playing. Apparently, there are no other resources for the game on the Net and keyword searches return stuff on blacksmithing and horses instead. The connection is not casual, however, as it is generally accepted that the game of horeshoes was started by blacksmiths and ferriers (horse-shoers). Modern gaming horseshoes bear only a passing resemblance to "real" horseshoes, since they have grown bigger and heavier to accommodate pitching by hand. The rules set forth here are based on the National Horseshoe Pitchers Associaton of America's official rules, NHPA. Be aware, the many regional variations exist and, unless you're playing in a tournament, it is customary to adopt local rules. The Courts
  • Stakes are placed 40 feet apart.
  • Stakes should extend 14 to 15 inches above the pit surface.
  • Stakes may be inclined toward each other, but not more than a 3 inch lean.
  • Stakes are solid or hollow steel 1 inch in diameter.

(Scroll down for Table of Contents (Click on small thumbnail photos to see larger versions.)
(Updated May 23, 2004) I have gotten better results on my foundered horse using a FREQUENT barefoot trim than with using horseshoes. This trimming style is based on the shape of wild horse feet, as described in Jaime Jackson's research on wild horses, and Dr. Hiltrud Strasser's books, " A Lifetime of Soundness " and " Shoeing: A Necessary Evil? " Dr. Strasser's books have been a tremendous help in understanding the physiology of the hoof and how different trimming and shoeing styles effect it.
My last photos of Max...early 2004 Sadly, I have to report that my old foundered horse, Max, died March 23, 2004. ...Rest well, sweet prince! Foundered foot, inside and out The success of this approach to laminitis hinges on trimming the feet OFTEN (ideally 2x weekly), keeping the horse on firm, non-concussive ground during the recovery period when he is barefoot, and using removable boots when working him on hard or rocky ground to prevent stone bruisesuntil enough sole and hoof wall thickness builds up, and enough stronger new laminae grow down to return the coffin bone to a more normal position.

    Trojan Horseshoes
A collection of thoughts on topics such as geek stuff, southern culture, life as a first-time parent and politics. Main October 14, 2002 The Real Iraq While reading The American Kaiser , I ran across the following quote from The Threatening Storm by Kenneth Pollack, as read in the House of Representatives by Paul Ryan (R-Wis) This is the fate that awaits thousands of Iraqis each year. The roughest estimates are that over the last 20 years more than 200,000 people have disappeared into Saddam's prison system, never to be heard from again. Hundreds of thousands of others were taken away and, after unforgettable bouts of torture that left them psychologically and often physically mangled, eventually were released or escaped. To give a sense of scale, just the numbers of Iraqis never heard from again would be equivalent to about 2.5 million Americans suffering such a fate. We cannot afford to forget who we are dealing with here. Posted by TH in at 10:00 PM TrackBack (0) End Commenting out comments > var site="sm6trojanhorseshoes"

    Pitchers Association
How to Pitch Horseshoes PITCHING TECHNIQUES Editor's Note: Roy W. Smith of CA was a top ranking player in his own right a few years ago and is one of the foremost students and authorities on the game. Author of "Science at the Stake" no one is better qualified to put into words the correct way to pitching horseshoes and improve playing techniques. The Delivery Assuming that you are a spectator on the sidelines of a public court, you will see an expert player perform this way. (right handed pitcher)
Released in a level position, the shoe leaves the hand cleanly. The release is effected with a deft and delicate wrist-motion. There is no jerk or snap of the arm and wrist. After releasing the shoe, the player's hand swings up, above the head, in a graceful follow-through. At no time is there any lost-motion in the delivery. All movements are smooth and well-coordinated. The shoe floats lazily through the air in an arc that is about 8 feet high at its highest point. (The height of the trajectory varies with different players.) Wobbling as it travels, the shoe begins to "break open" just before it crosses the foul line of the pitcher's box. The shoe drops open-end-first onto the stake. There is a sharp clink as the shoe encircles the stake. A ringer! A few moments later, the second shoe is sent on its way to land on top of the first one. A double ringer!
The Fundamentals of the Delivery Wherever horseshoe pitchers gather to play, you can see many different styles used in delivering. Some of these styles are smooth and correct. But many others are not. Merely picking up a pitching shoe and throwing it does not mean that a person can control it. On many occasions, you can hear a great deal about the importance of the delivery. But, all too often, the fundamentals that go to make up the delivery do not receive enough attention. Even though a horseshoe may represent a symbol of luck to some people, there is little or no luck involved in pitching ringers. Nor is there any shortcut that will quickly transform a novice into an expert player. Many hours of patient and correct practice are necessary to develop a good pitcher.
