142. Horse Welfare Part 1
Defines welfare and wellbeing and presents the welfare code of the New Zealand Equine Federation. Highlights welfare contraventions inherent to intensive management practices, particularly in the racing industry.
http://www.equine-behavior.com/welfare/Welfare, Part1..htm
Welfare At Horse Behavior and Psychology "A unique environment for the study of Social Behavior and Psychology in Horses" Welfare is one of those words that means many different things to as many different people. The concept of welfare can be viewed in a scientific manner, where the physiological and psychological results of environmental stress, and the impact of it on an organism, is measured and a scale produced with 'very good' at one end and 'very poor' at the other but, even when a technical directory of measurement, cause and effect is to hand, the basic question remains unanswered, and that is the why of it rather than the what. The importance of providing good welfare is an ethical or moral issue; it has no real existence in the physical world; it is subjective and entirely open to definition. The task is made easier by the fact that more and more official bodies are producing welfare codes, from the European Community to the International Equestrian Federation. As a working model the F.E.I (Fedaracion Equestre Internationale) code is probably a logical choice, and appears below, in exactly the format in which it appeared in the NZEF (New Zealand Equestrian Federation) newsletter. WELFARE OF THE HORSE The following is a Code of Conduct based on that promoted by the FEI, but includes a few minor changes to reflect the New Zealand environment.

145. 1999 World Trotting Conf Papers - Hugh Wirth
Paper presented by Dr Hugh Wirth outlining RSPCA Australia's stance on horse welfare issues, including the use of horses for harness racing and other forms of entertainment. Outlines areas of concern and the difficulties of defining welfare .
http://www.harness.org.au/99wldcon/PWIRTH2.HTM
HORSE WELFARE Dr Hugh J Wirth, AM
President, RSPCA Australia Animal Welfare There are many definitions of animal welfare and, to date, no definition has been agreed to internationally. This paper advocates the perhaps old fashioned view that the welfare of horses can always be assured simply by the constant application of high standards of husbandry (in the broadest definition). Similarly, there is no internationally agreed definition of the philosophy of animal welfare. For nearly two hundred years the dominant philosophical view of animal welfare in western society is that humans must treat animals humanely. Where humans make use of animals, or interfere with their habitat, they should bestow a level of care befitting human dignity as a rational, intelligent, compassionate being, and a level of care merited by the nature of the animal as a sentient creature capable of responding to human care and attention. Such care should be marked by sympathy, consideration, compassion and tenderness towards animals. A new philosophy of animal welfare denies the right of humans to use animals in any situation, claiming such a right is pure exploitation. The aim of this philosophy, if realised, is for all living creatures to live in harmony with each other.

Standardbred Table of Contents History and Origin of the Breed Harness Racing Today Breed Characteristics Harness Racing Terminology ... Breed Organizations History and Origin of the Breed The origins of the Standardbred trace back to Messenger, an English Thoroughbred foaled in 1780, and later exported to the United States. Messenger was the great-grandsire of Hambletonian 10, to whom every Standardbred can trace its heritage. Thus, Standardbreds are a relatively new breed, dating back just over 200 years. The name "Standardbred" originated because the early trotters (pacers would not come into favor until much later) were required to reach a certain standard for the mile distance in order to be registered as part of the new breed. The mile is still the standard distance covered in nearly every harness race. The first Standardbred races were contested along roads, with men challenging their friends to see who had the swifter steed. Often the streets of major cities were cleared and races conducted. That's why so many American cities have a Race Street. Over the years, sportsmen came to recite the names of certain champions with awe: Flora Temple, the "Bob-Tailed Nag" of Stephen Foster's
