During nearly 200 miles the backpacker will cross only one road, see only a few buildings, and walk on established trails less than half the time. And, as a bonus, almost all of the route traverses timberline, that marvelous landscape sandwiched between forest and talus. Welcome to the high country Where is this unknown walk? The Brooks Range? Day Hiking in Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park, encompassing 2.2 million acres, is one of America's premier wilderness areas. Most of the park is backcountry and managed as wilderness. Over 1,100 miles (1770 km) of trails are available for hiking. However, there are dangers inherent in wilderness: unpredictable wildlife, changing weather conditions, remote thermal areas, cold water lakes, turbulent streams, and rugged mountains with loose, "rotten" rock. Visiting wilderness means experiencing the land on its terms. If you choose to explore and enjoy the natural wonders of Yellowstone, there is no guarantee of your safety. Be prepared for any situation. Carefully read all backcountry guidelines and regulations. Spring Hiking in Yellowstone is a great way to both see and enjoy the park. This time period allows the unique opportunity for non-motorized use of certain park roads. Hiking, bicycling, jogging, roller blades, roller skis, and similar means of non-motorized travel are permitted between the West Entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs ONLY from about mid March through the third Thursday in April. The opening day in March is weather dependant.

Planning a Hike
Hikers need to assume individual responsibility for planning their trips and hiking safely. Before setting out on your hike, stop by a park visitor center to obtain needed warnings and recommondations. You will increase your odds of a safe hike, decrease your disturbance to park wildlife, and lessen cumulative damage to resources.
Visitor center bookstores carry a complete line of trail guides, topographic maps and field guides to aid the hiker. Publications are also available by mail. Call the Glacier Natural History Association at (406) 888-5756, to request a catalog.
Five self-guided walks interpret trailside features with brochures and signs. The Trail of the Cedars, Huckleberry Mountain, Hidden Lake, Sun Point, and Swiftcurrent Nature Trails encourage hikers to experience Glacier National Park at their own pace. The Trail of the Cedars is wheelchair accessible. Good day hikes are plentiful. Visitor center staff will be happy to assist you with your choices and provide free maps of popular trails in park.

Snowshoeing the Superior Hiking Trail Wait... Before you get lost in my snowshoeing adventure, check out my recent trip to Costa Rica When I started planning our snowshoeing trip I spent a lot of time trying to find information about some hikes on the internet. I was somewhat unlucky and only found good information from the Superior Hiking Trail Association Website. Hopefully, my recap of my trip can help you plan yours. Hike 1 - Gooseberry Falls State Park
We did this hike the first day, because I thought it would be nice to see the falls and it would be a nice start to a three day trip. Our goal was to follow the snowshoe path up the south side of the river to the fifth falls and then cross the river and come back down on the north side of the river. Unfortunately the path had such little snow cover we decided almost immediately to hike on Gooseberry River.
The second part of our hike we decided to take off our snowshoes and follow the snowshoe loop on the south side of Hwy 61. This is a beautiful hike to a cliff that overlooks Lake Superior.
Total hiking time for both hikes: 4 Hours
Overall rating: B Path is much too beaten down for snowshoeing. If you accept that, or hike on the river, then it's a beautiful hike. The visitors center at Gooseberry falls is brand new and worth visiting!

Welcome
to our tour of the trails that surround our home, and the wildflowers that we find on them.
There are about 100 hiking trails within a short driving distance of our home. There are also lots of wildflowers. That's why we've called our Web site 'Hiking Trails and Wildflowers'. If you're a hiker who is curious about the wildflowers that grow along the trail, then this Web site is for you. You will see pictures and descriptions of some of the most beautiful local wildflowers, along with scenic photographs, maps and descriptions of trails on which they can be found. Everything you see here is original and based on our own observations over the years.
We live in Oakridge , which is in Lane County, Oregon Oakridge lies on the western slopes of the Oregon Cascade mountains, at an altitude of 370 m (1200 ft.). It is surrounded by National Forest, and is near the headwaters of the Willamette (Will-AM-et) River.
A National Forest is a large area of public land managed primarily for commercial timber production, with recreation allowed, while a National Park is a smaller area set aside for its scenic value, with no timber production allowed. Some parts of a National Forest may be managed as wilderness areas, in which no vehicles or logging are allowed. A large part of western Oregon is National Forest, while there is only one National Park ( Crater Lake The Willamette Pass (1600 m, 5200 ft.) and several wilderness areas lie just to the east of Oakridge. From our home we can see the area's highest mountain
