50. Hit The Trail - Grand Canyon And The Southwest
Former Grand Canyon ranger talks about hiking and backpacking at the Grand Canyon and in the desert southwest. Learn what equipment and preparation is necessary to have a successful and enjoyable time while on your outdoor adventure.
http://hitthetrail.com/
Hello and welcome! Wow, things are getting busy at Grand Canyon. I just did a hike on Grandview this last week and was amazed at how packed it was already. Cars were lining up on the access road to the overlook due to the large number of parking spots already filled. I can only imagine what the season is going to be like once school lets out for the summer. For those of you planning a trip to the park, I would advise you to arrive early and be prepared for long lines and a lack of adequate parking. The Grand Canyon has a wonderful shuttle system that is completely free and takes you to almost every place in the Village that you might want to go. To find the shuttle schedule and view maps of the routes, be sure to visit the National Park's South Rim shuttle page. And with the price of fuel, the free shuttle is even a better deal! You can also find more options for transportation to and from the park on my Transportation Links page. I also wanted to let everyone know that I will be gone for about about three weeks starting Monday, May 24th. I will be leading two trips for the Grand Canyon Field Institute My next hike starts later the same week. The group will be meeting the afternoon of June 3rd and heading into Havasu the following morning. We will be there for a couple of nights, playing in the turquoise waterfalls of Mooney Falls and exploring the other falls and down canyon a bit. We hike out on the 7th.

Best Hiking Boots: (out of 80)
Vasque Sundowner, Raichle Mountain Trekker, La Sportiva Makalu
Top Rated What the Research Says Vasque Sundowner (*est. $180)
Where to buy
Trekking/moderate off-trail. The Sundowner's combination of light weight (2 lb. 14 oz.), lateral stability and classic one-piece construction, augmented with a waterproof GoreTex inner liner, stomps the competition. Experts praise this boot's great fit, "rocker" sole, roomy but stable toe box, edging ability on descents, and ability to shed water. Raichle Mountain Trekker (*est. $220)
Where to buy
Long-distance hiking. Expert outdoorspeople wax enthusiastic about the Mountain Trekker's ability to stay comfortable over long distances. Its "rocker" sole is praised by various reviewers, as is its full nylon shank, which provides good lateral stability and edging ability. The Trekker doesn't compare to the Sundowner for break-in ability, but has terrific detail, including gunmetal lacing eyes, rubber rand and midsole, and full leather lining. This boot weighs in at 3 lb. 6 oz. La Sportiva Makalu (*est. $235)
