WHAT ARE HIGHLAND GAMES?
Traditional "games" in the highlands of Scotland were athletic contests. Dating back almost a thousand years, they were tests of strength for war, work and sport. Highland Games would take place periodically where people gathered for seasonal celebrations or market days. As Scots emigrated through the world, they took this this colorful event with them. Modern Highland Games are multi-faceted festivals in which athletes share the day with dancers, pipe bands and Celtic organizations. The Illinois St. Andrew Society's annual festival also features a sheep herding demonstration, a rugby tournament, and a full range of activities for childrenfrom junior athletics to Scottish crafts. Musicians and dancers perform throughout the day in the entertainment tent. Both Scottish and American foods are available and the shopping is an ethnic marketplace experience. An inspiring closing ceremony features hundreds of pipers and drummers passing in review. The festivities end with an evening ceilidh (pronounced "kay-lee"), a traditional music and dance party.

The Games are attended by up to 8000 people annually, drawing visitors from many parts of the world. Many more visitors were expected this year with the attraction of three days of celebrations. Games are held annually at Caledonian Park, Waipu, Northland, New Zealand. Competitions commence at 9.30 am. The Massed Parade of all competing and visiting pipers and drummers begins at 12.30 pm; Scottish Country Dancing demonstrations continue all day and the Ceilidh follows the Games. Our special guests this year included the Clan Gordon Pipe Band from Tacoma, Washington State, USA. The massed parade of competitors and Clans marched off at 12.30 from the Bowling Club end of the park. They marched down to the stage area for the Official opening and played a selection of tunes under the direction of Pipe Major Bain McGregor of Waipu.
