Since the first Games were held in 1948, the people of Glengarry have extended close to a million welcomes to visitors who come to see what is estimated to be one of the largest Highland Games in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people have found themselves drawn once a year to Maxville , to witness an outstanding display of music dance sports pageantry , and tradition In the course of the day, more than 60 pipe bands are put through their paces to decide the North American Pipe Band Championships Highland Dance competition and giants hurl telephone pole-sized cabers and 50 pound iron hammers around the infield. Information about highland games and festivals, Celtic musicians, and Clan Hunter, with image gallery.

Failte! This site is dedicated to one of my main interests in life: Scotland and all things Scottish. My ancestors, James Hunter, his wife Margaret, and their daughter Jane, set sail on a schooner from Greenock to New Brunswick, Canada, in the month of June, 1846. On September 5, 2002, I took off on an airplane from Boston to Glasgow, accompanied by my brother and his wife. This was a trip of a lifetime, dreamed about for years. We spent ten glorious days touring around the country, and if you care to read about it and see the photos, you can find it here April 6th is Tartan Day
On April 6, 1320, the Scottish people addressed a letter to Pope John XXII, enumerating their many grievances against Edward II, the English king, asserting their right to choose their own government, and declaring their independence from England. Sound vaguely familiar? This document is called the Arbroath Declaration , as is was written at the abbey in the town of the same name. Clicking the hypertext will bring you to a site with the full textcheck out the similarities in substance between it and the Declaration of Independence. Without question, Thomas Jefferson was acquainted with the Arbroath Declaration, as several of his tutors were Scots. The Congress of the United States, as well as the Legislature of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have, in recognition of the many contributions people of Scottish descent have made to all facets of life, declared that April 6 of each year is Tartan Day.

Lonach Highland Games and Gathering of Scotland
The only one of its kind, with a traditional March of the Clansmen and daily community involvement
By Keith and Lois Forbes. We are married Scottish and American respectively authors, garden and travel writers and historians. Read about our ancestors of the 13th century, descended from John de Forbes of Scotland . At least once every year, we visit and write about unusual, dramatic and beautiful Treasures of Britain and Europe, from our own personal experiences, for a world-wide audience.
One of our unique Scottish National Treasure series
Bring an SLR or good digital camera, with 200 and 400 ASA 35mm film. This area offers gorgeous and dramatic scenery. Be prepared for misty or rainy weather from time to time, part of the majesty of the region, adding even more impact. All photographs below are by the authors of this website
Why this webfile?
As Forbeses, we wrote this file and even more on the extensive Forbes Clan files after we attended the Lonach Games & Gathering in August 2001. We are hoping to one day come "home" to Aberdeenshire or nearby, where the Lonach Highland Games and Gathering are held and from where our ancestors came. We hope to live, write, bring our online and offline historical associations and organization with us to be based there; travel from there; and qualify in due course as members of the Lonach Hall Community Association (LHCA) and the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society mentioned below.
