HARNESS RACING
A historic form of equine competition, harness racing is an enormously popular sport today. The harness racing horse is the Standardbred, trained to trot or pace at speeds up to 30 miles per hour, or faster.
History
In the United States, horses and buggies squared off in impromptu races along city streets and country roads. Later, harness races became a popular attraction at many county fairs.
The Standardbred
The "standard" referred to a 2:30 minute mark under which a horse had to trot or pace one mile. Thoroughbred, Morgan, and Narragansett Pacer blood were combined to achieve the Standardbred. Messenger, a grey Thoroughbred imported in 1788 from England, was the Standardbred's foundation sire.
  • Hambletonian
A great-grandson of Messenger, this horse sired more than 1,300 foals that dominated harness racing after the Civil War. Dan Patch
Foaled in 1896, Dan Patch was unbeaten in three racing seasons. The pacer's 1:55 ¼ mile record, set in 1906 as a nine year old, lasted for 32 years.
The Difference Between a Trotter and Pacer
A trotter moves its legs diagonally, right front and left hind, then left front and right hind striking the ground simutaneously. A pacer moves its legs laterally, right front and right hind, then left front and left hind striking the ground simultaneously.

Little Brown Jug Harness Race
A Local Legacy

Have you ever seen a horse race? How about a harness race? A harness race is one in which a horse pulls a light, two-wheeled vehicle called a sulky. Harness racing developed from the old days when horses and buggies raced each other on country roads or city streets. Basically, there are two major types of horse racing riding a horse with a saddle and harness racing. There are two types of horses that compete in harness racing: one is the pacing horse, which moves both legs on one side of its body at the same time, and the other is the trotting horse, whose left front and right rear leg move forward at the same time, then right front and left rear leg move together. Because there are two types of horses, there are two kinds of harness racing: trotting or pacing. If you want to see a horse pacing race go to Delaware, Ohio, for the Little Brown Jug Harness Race, which takes place every year on the third Thursday after Labor Day. The Little Brown Jug is a race for three-year-old pacing horses. The first race was held in 1946. Back then, trotting horses were more popular, but two men in the city liked pacing horses, so they formed the Little Brown Jug Society and organized the race.

60. Harness Racing - Wales And Border Counties Harness Racing - Equiworld - Equestri
WALES BORDER COUNTIES harness racing Wales Border Counties Racing Association is the original independent harness racing organization in Great Britain.
http://www.equiworld.net/uk/sports/harnessracing/
is the original independent harness racing organization in Great Britain. Its area covers the southern half of Wales and the bordering counties of England, extending from the West coast of Wales as far as the English county of Herefordshire, and from Caersws in Mid Wales to Ammanford in South Wales. Harness Racing has been established in Mid- and South Wales since before the end of the nineteenth century, racing the native breed of horses, the Welsh Cobs. In the latter part of the twentieth century, these indigenous trotters have been replaced by Standardbred Horses imported from America. British Harness racing today is dominated by pacing horses with very few trotters currently competing. The season traditionally begins on Easter Monday with the oldest meeting in the calendar at Llangadog in Carmarthenshire, South Wales. Race meetings are held every weekend until the end of September, while mid-week evening meetings are held regularly during July and August. The last race meeting of the season is a charity meeting with the venue changing yearly where the horse-owners hold a low prize-money meeting to raise money for local charities. The presentation of the annual awards to horses and drivers takes place at this meeting and adds to the great friendly party atmosphere. A new horse begins its racing career by running in the Nursery races; these non-betting races introduce the horse to the sport. Racing horses are divided into four grades, depending on their experience. The first grade is the Baby Novice class where after three wins they progress to the Novice class. After another three wins they may enter into open racing or Grade B class. The cream of the horses may go on to qualify for the Grade A class. Horses are handicapped on distance in their grade races. These handicaps are "off the gate", ten yards or twenty yards from the gate as for the Baby Novice, Novice and Grade B races whereas a Grade A horse can be handicapped to a distance of sixty yards behind the starting gate.
