That we love to bet is hardly surprising. Betting is an affirmation of our personal election by the all-knowing, all-seeing God of our fathers, who makes the last first and the first last and who rewards the faithful with Hail Mary passes caught in the end zone and annual 20 percent increases in the Dow. Before luck's generous banquet, the sport of greyhound racing appears like a shabby and uninvited guest who lacks the nerve to approach the table. Devoid even of what suspect glamour attaches itself to horse racing, dog racing is organized gambling in its most atavistic and least promising form. Those who dream of luxury cars and fifty-foot powerboats head for Las Vegas. The dog track is where America's belief in its own good luck goes to die. Although greyhound racing is currently legal in eighteen states, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Rhode Island, close to one third of America's forty-eight dog tracks are located in Florida. Foremost among these, in terms of both renown and longevity, is the Derby Lane Greyhound Park, a quarter-mile of fine-grained sand backed by waving palm trees in St. Petersburg. The track's main grandstand resembles an oversize bowl-o-rama flanked on either side by orange-painted valet-parking stands of early Sixties space-age design, which are connected by a concrete overhang to two admissions gates, one for regular customers and the other for Derby Lane clubhouse members. In front of the grandstand is an oversize parking lot in which pickup trucks and aging Corollas are greatly outnumbered by pigeons waddling through the puddles left over from last night's rain.

Who We Are Sitemap Book Reviews The Lighter Side ... Movies The Dirty Business of Greyhound Racing Cruel training practices In Australia, it is illegal under the Prevention's to Cruelty to Animals Act to use live bait to train a dog to run faster, but this doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't happen. Many greyhound trainers believe that using live lures is essential to teach their dogs to chase mechanical lures at race time. Apparently they believe it makes for better entertainment. A spokesperson from the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (NSW) went to great lengths to assure this reporter that "by giving a dog a mild shock of a battery ... the dog will then run faster". Few industries have had so much corruption alleged and yet managed to avoid the scrutiny of a major investigation into animal welfare. When this fact was brought by us to the Minister of Racing and Gaming, the Hon Richard Face, the PR machine came out in full force. Letters and phone calls from his head honchos were emphatic, and "disappointed" that we could even suggest such a thing! Export shame "Trainers love their dogs", was a line oft repeated, but when questioned about the dogs that are shipped off to China regularly there was no reply. There are an unknown number of Australian bred greyhounds that are sent each year to race in China, and more recently Vietnam. These dogs would almost certainly be transported, housed and raced under terrible conditions. As these countries are also known to include dog in their diet, especially in rural areas, there are strong reasons to believe that this is the ultimate fate awaiting man's best friend. What is known for sure however is that some Australians are making big bucks out of exporting these greyhounds.

Greyhound racing
Greyhound racing is a sport which involves the racing of greyhound dogs. The dogs chase after an artificial hare on a track until they arrive at the finish line. The one which arrives first is the winner. Modern greyhound racing has its origins in coursing. The first recorded attempt at racing greyhounds on a track was made at Hendon in 1876, but this experiment did not develop. The sport emerged in its recognizable modern form, featuring circular or oval tracks, an artificial hare as quarry and on-course betting, in the United States during the 1920s. In 1926, it was introduced to Britain by an American, Charles Munn, in association with Major Lyne-Dixon, a key figure in coursing, and Brigadier-General Critchley. They launched the Greyhound Racing Association, and held the first British meeting at Manchester's Belle Vue. The sport was successful in cities and town throughout the U.K. - by the end of 1927, there were forty tracks operating. The sport was particularly attractive to predominantly male working-class audiences, for whom the urban locations of the tracks and the evening times of the meetings were accessible, and to patrons and owners from various social backgrounds. Betting has always been a key ingredient of greyhound racing, both through on-course bookmakers and the totalizator, first introduced in 1930. Like
