AFL Live 2003 - Gaelic Football 2004 is likely to be based on the latest version of this game. The PlayStation's already extensive lineup of sports games is going to get an unexpected addition in the summer of 2004. Gaelic Football - probably best described as a cross between soccer, basketball, rugby and boxing - is a sport primarily played in Ireland, but with a big following in England, the USA and Australia, the latter because of its similarities to Aussie Rules. This similarity is also likely to be the reason that the game is actually in development with Melbourne-based IR Gurus in the hot seat, utilizing its AFL Live sports engine to recreate the rigors of Gaelic. Gaelic football teams consist of 15 players, with up to five substitutions allowed during a match. The goal posts are similar to rugby, with tall upright posts intersected by a crossbar around seven feet from the ground. The ball can be kicked over the post for a single point or under for a goal, which counts as the equivalent of three points - though it's more difficult because there's a keeper. Although the ball is regularly handled, it must be either bounced or kicked from foot to hand every four steps, and can only be passed to another player either by kicking or punching - but not throwing. Points and goals can only be scored by kicking.

    Gaelic Football
Our school takes part in the County Galway National School's league every year. We play in the 15 a side "A" competition, against schools from Galway city mostly. In the past we have had great success in this competion, winning it many times, but we have only won it once in the 1990's.
In the season '99/'00 we lost two games by only a point, and did not qualify for the play-offs, but we hope to have more luck next year.
Over the years, our school has produced many players who have gone on to represent Galway at the highest level. Some have won All-Irelands,with the "Terrible Twins" of Sean Purcell and Frank Stockwell, and Ja Fallon being famous all over the country for their football talent.
We hope to bring back some success soon, but overall we just love to play one of our national sports.

Friday, 04 January, 2002 No More Sectarianism in Gaelic Football by our correspondent Jan Schuurman, 4th January 2002 In Northern Ireland, more than thirty years of conflict have turned the sports arena into a political arena. Traditional Irish sports, such as Gaelic Football and Hurling, are seen as symbols of the fight by Catholic Republicans to end British rule and join a United Ireland. The powerful Gaelic Athletic Association even had an official rule that banned members of the British security forces from taking part in its sports events. That rule was scrapped recently and observers say that's a positive development in a year otherwise marked by sharp divisions. But what difference is the abolition of Rule 21 going to make? Jan Schuurman´s Report, 3´25" Kieran Gorman is the son of a former IRA Volunteer and IRA prisoner. He loves playing Gaelic Football, and attends many matches as well. I met him at Casement Park, a Gaelic Football venue in Republican West Belfast, the constituency of Gerry Adams, the president of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA.
"Gaelic Football is a lot like a mixture between rugby and soccer. You either put the ball in the net, in the goal, just like soccer, or you put it over the bar between the posts. That's basically it. It's a lot rougher than soccer, although it's not as rough as rugby."

    Origins
Though it has existed for centuries, it was formally arranged into an organised playing code by the Gaelic Athletic Association in the late nineteenth century. Male and female leagues of the game exist.
    Rules
Gaelic football's rules are most similar to Australian Rules Football, and it is widely believed that Irish games were a significant influence on the Australian game. Since the late 20th Century, Gaelic and Australian rules teams have played each other in International Rules matches, in which compromise rules based on both games are used.
