Foxhunting is the "must see" for your visit to Thomson. If you have never hunted, you are sure to be surprised to find out what this sport is all about. If you have hunted anywhere else, you will discover this to be the most beautiful hunt country and some of the finest hounds to be found. This spectacle of tradition and sportsmanship begins on the first Saturday in November, when the Blessing of Hounds heralds the opening meet of The Belle Meade Hunt. Then, hunts are held each Wednesday and Saturday through March. The Belle Meade Hunt is one of only 150 fox hunts registered by the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America (MFHA) . The hunt was organized in 1966 by two gentlemen who loved riding and the rolling beauty of McDuffie County land. Just two years later The Belle Meade Hunt was granted membership in the MFHA. Riders in recent hunts spanned age groups from 6 to 71. Riders are grouped according to ability, so the expert and novice can still follow the "Tally Ho!" One area family has several generations to participate yearly.

If there were even 25% more foxes about at lambing time in the College Valley area the problem of lamb losses could be very serious for the local hill farmers whose income is already down to a poverty stricken level. All are in agreement, including the government, that fox populations need to be controlled and managed.
    Is foxhunting humane?
Yes, it is the most acceptable and humane way of keeping the fox population in natural balance. There is an increasing amount of hard scientific research to support this (references) . The fox is a wonderful animal and hunting people are the last people to want to see the fox population culled by less humane methods. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons came to the following conclusion on hunting: "As members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons we submit therefore that hunting by hounds is the most natural and humane way of controlling the population of all four quarry species, fox, deer, hare and mink, in the countryside.

    http://hsa.enviroweb.org/features/fhleaf.html
    FOXHUNTING....
There are over 200 foxhunts in Britain, each hunting 2 to 4 times a week. The main season is from November until late March, although some carry on until the start of May. All hunts also 'cub hunt' (hunt young fox cubs as training for new hounds) for 2/3 months before the start of the main season. The hunt itself will gather in late morning, although an 'earth stopper' will have been out at dawn to block up any known fox earths, drains and badger setts, so that foxes returning from a night's foraging will be exposed above ground. The huntsman will lead the hounds to a wood or covert where there is a known earth. The hounds are sent into the wood to flush out any foxes. As all underground escape routes are blocked, the fox is forced to run to escape the hounds. Riders positioned around the wood will 'holloa' to let the huntsman know the direction the fox has run. Foxhounds are bred to be slower than foxes, but have far better stamina. Thus, the fox will initially out-pace the hounds, but tire quicker, allowing the hounds to eventually catch up with it. It is almost always an older, experienced hound who will catch a fox on the run, snapping at any part of the fox to slow it down. The rest of the pack then catches up and the fox is torn to pieces. If the fox manages to find refuge in an un-blocked earth, the hunt employ terriermen who will put their terriers down the earth to force the fox into the open to be re-hunted, or attack the fox underground while the men dig down through the soil to catch the terrified animal. Once they have dug out the fox, the terriermen are supposed to shoot it, but many will simply give it a blow with a spade. It is not unheard of (although against fox hunting rules) for the fox to be thrown alive to the waiting hounds.

    Branching Out
    An introduction to foxhunting
by Peter Parker VK3YE - first appeared in Amateur Radio, August 1998 Foxhunting, amateur radio direction finding (ARDF) or hidden transmitter hunting is a fun activity where people compete to be the first to find a hidden radio transmitter. They do this by using receivers with directional antennas to hone in on the transmitted signal. Apart from the excitement of the hunt itself, those who like making small receivers and directional antennas will enjoy it for the challenge of building equipment that is rugged, reliable and does not give false readings. Nevertheless, constructional ability is not required to enjoy the activity - many beginners use hand-held VHF transceivers or scanners to receive signals from the 'fox' transmitter. Regular foxhunts are held by local radio clubs or foxhunting groups. Participants may go on their own or be part of a team. Hunts are conducted either on foot or in vehicles. An amateur transmitting licence is not necessary to participate. A variant of foxhunting is Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF). This is a rapidly growing international sport and calls for a degree of physical fitness not possessed by many amateurs. Details on ARDF are presented elsewhere in this article.

November 1993: JBKO at the Piedmont Hunt
It was Saturday, November 20, just before daybreak in the hunt country of Virginia. A solemn darkness enveloped the rolling countryside between historic Llangollen Farm and Ayrshire, north of the village of Upperville. All at once, the gloom was pierced by the sound and lights of a caravan of trucks and SUVs towing big, six-horse vans and smaller two-horse tagalongs. The headlights made a circuit of the surrounding fields, then fell upon a barn, silhouetting it against the sapphire sky. There, a tall, slim woman leaned against the side of the barn, one booted leg casually crossed over the other. She was puffing on a cigarette and exhaling streams of thick smoke into the frigid morning air.

MPs will vote on a hunting ban next week
Labour peer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg has launched a campaign to stop MPs from banning foxhunting. Lord Bragg has sent a video and letter to every MP in the hope that they will not back a ban when they vote on the issue next week.
The outcome of the vote could affect fundamentally the livelihood of thousands of families
Lord Bragg The video is about Lakeland farmer Eric Taylforth, who describes how criminalising hunting would affect his family's future, as well as the community and countryside in which they live. Members of the House of Lords have been targeted through a similar campaign launched by another Labour peer, Baroness Mallalieu. The government's hunting bill gives MPs three options - allowing hunting with dogs to continue with voluntary regulations, hunting with dogs under licence from a new hunting authority, or a complete ban. In his letter, Lord Bragg, who won a £10,000 literary prize for a novel inspired by his father last year, warns that voting for a ban could destroy many families.

Georgette Heyer Fox-Hunting Assheson Smith was one of the leading huntsmen of his day - even Napoleon had heard of and admired him. He was obviously a tough customer; literally throwing himself and horse over every fence, and fearing nothing. He was known for cramming his fences, ie pushing the horse at the fence, and was a role model for all the Corinthians and young bucks. Obviously the equivalent of today's fast driver, a menace to all else on the road (or field). The Melton Men were members of the hunts that met at various meets in Leicestershire (roughly the middle of England) which included the Quorn, the Belvoir, the Pytchley.
Although fox hunting has declined, an annual hunt is still held on New Year's Day in Melton Market Place. Three hunts have territories which intersect at Melton Mowbray: Quorn, Cottesmore and Belvoir. The hunting season runs from November to March. The town is hoping to have a complete museum devoted to hunting and its role in the country. Displays are already available for viewing in the Carnegie Museum. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/foxman/index.htm
