Nicholas Watt, political correspondent. Margaret Beckett, the environment secretary, said that defeat for the government's compromise proposals would jeopardise the entire hunting bill. Gerald Kaufman, a veteran Labour MP and opponent of foxhunting, claims it's procedural blackmail to tell MPs that they either have to let the bill through or risk losing a ban, and that he doesn't believe Margaret Beckett wants to do that.

Phoney rebellions against Blair's empty policies
Listening to the supposedly great debates dominating British politics today, with the threatened rebellions by Labour MPs over top-up fees or foundation hospitals, I am tempted to say: bring back the foxhunting debate! Of course, as a national political issue, the battle over a ban on hunting with hounds is a charade. The issue is entirely irrelevant to the lives of almost everybody in Britain, and has been artificially inflated by Labour MPs looking for some cause on which they can still strike a radical posture. The endless rounds of debate have been characterised by ridiculous and distorted arguments on both sides. The gruesome spectacle of self-righteous anti-hunting MPs like Labour's Tony Banks and the Tory Ann Widdecombe chasing government ministers around parliament has seemed to capture Oscar Wilde's description of hunting as the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable. But compared to the matters at the centre of political debate now, the foxhunting charade looks like a principled and important political issue. At least the attempt to ban a pastime involves a debate about the limits of freedom in contemporary society, at a moment when other illiberal measures tend to be nodded through without much opposition. And the hunting issue has certainly unleashed passions on either side, including the rare sight these days of a distinct constituency that is prepared to take a stand against the government in defence of its own interests.

    National Foxhunting Weekend (8-9 May):
Joe Moell (K0OV) on April 28, 2004 Add a comment about this article! It's springtime and hams around the country are moving their radio activities outside. Plan now to get out of the shack and take part in the 7th annual CQ Magazine National Foxhunting Weekend (NFW), May 8-9, 2004. It's a time when hidden transmitter hunters from around the country will go on their favorite kind of RDF adventure. Perhaps it will be a mobile "T-hunt," with one or more transmitters scattered around the city. Who will win by finding them first, or with least odometer mileage? Other hams prefer their foxhunting to be all on foot in a big park. They call it foxtailing, radio-orienteering or ARDF. There is an internationally recognized set of rules for this kind of hunt, which takes place in about 30 countries around the world. Many clubs will use the NFW as a time to train for the

It is unusual for a camp to offer so many equestrian experiences, but we believe that a developing rider should be able to learn as much as possible about horses and the different ways they are used. Our methods of teaching riding enable students to experience success in graduated steps promoting their self esteem and confidence. Girls will use the riding skills they learn at this camp the rest of their lives. International Riding Camp is accredited by the American Camping Association.

Foxhunting is numerically the strongest of the hound sports with some 190 registered packs. Most packs are followed on horseback. The day starts with a Meet - which may be at a pub or a farm.
The hunting of foxes with hounds for sport became popular over two hundred years ago. But it continues to thrive because the fox is a serious predator that must be controlled and most farmers and landowners welcome hunts on their land. Some packs are traditionally hunted on foot - particularly in the Fells and parts of Wales where the terrain is not suited to horses - but mounted packs will also go out on foot when conditions are not suitable for horses.
Each hunt has its own designated area, which is called the 'hunt country.' After the Meet, hounds are taken to an area (the covert) where foxes are thought likely to be found. This is called 'the draw'. Hunt followers are there for the ride - the huntsman and his assistants (called 'whippers-in) are responsible for hunting the hounds. The mounted followers (called 'the field') are under the control of a Field Master and must be kept far enough away from hounds so they can work safely. There will be between 30 and 40 hounds - but they are always counted in - and referred to as - couples.

    http://www.foxhunter.com/trianglehunt/
History of Triangle Hunt The Triangle Hunt was established in 1961 as a private pack and soon become a Hunt Club in 1964. In 1967 The Hunt was registered with the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America (M.F.H.A.), and was officially recognized in 1969. Welcome To The Triangle Hunt Cub hunting begins toward the end of September or beginning of October, depending upon the time crops are harvested. It is only through the generosity of the landowners and farmers that The Triangle Hunt can continue. The Opening Meet, which signifies the start of the fox hunting season, takes place the first weekend in November. From this time until April 1st, hounds go out two or three days each week. A fixture card is sent out giving the time, date, and location of future meets. The Triangle Hunt typically hunts Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons during season. Novice Days All Hunts in February and March of 2004 will be Novice Days. Experience the thrill of foxhunting first-hand. Novice Day is the perfect opportunity to "test-ride" the sport of foxhunting. Formal attire is excused, and any tack is welcome. Protective headgear is highly recommended. Ride with the first flight, or take a more relaxed pace with the hilltoppers. Jumps will not exceed 2'11" and all are optional with alternate routes available. The $25 capping fee includes traditional stirrup cup beverages prior to the hunt, the foxhunt (which typically lasts 2-3 hours), and breakfast following the hunt. The hunt begins promptly at 9:00am. Arrive in plenty of time to tack up and still enjoy the pre-hunt social activities.

Our goal is to create a feeling of welcome where guests will be introduced to masters , hunt staff, and friends (and may even be offered a flask.) With the help of our professional trainers we will emphasize fun and safety in the field, and you will be sure to be invited back year after year. We are very interested in preserving field sports "I've heard that foxhunting in Ireland is not for the faint of heart. What do you recommend?" I recommend that you go on our preseason tours, late September, and October, if you want the feel of foxhunting without the "thrills and spills." Our trainers can arrange for us to go "out" with the hunt staff on a private basis. You can watch the young hounds work and see some beautiful countryside. The weather is mild at that time of year too! The other option would be to come on our spring Cross Country training tour where you will learn what to expect out foxhunting (lots of ditches and banks) in a safe, controlled environment. Many people start out that way; then go foxhunting on their next trip.
Crossing the Irish Banks This is an instructional video with Aidan O'Connell about how to ride over natural Irish countryside. It includes scenes of preparing and training the young horses to cross this country, as well as excerpts from the jumping clinics that he gives in Europe and America.

    55. Countryside Alliance: This Is Foxhunting
Fox hunting This page describes in detail the role of foxhunting in managing the fox population and the British countryside. Come foxhunting.
    http://www.countryside-alliance.org/edu/edu2-3-5fox.htm

    Foxhunting
Foxhunting is the pursuit of the wild fox with a pack of hounds. Man has been controlling foxes since he started to farm animals, but the hunting of foxes with hounds for sport became popular over two hundred years ago. The fox is a pest and its population needs to be controlled. Individuals and organisations concerned with farming and the management of the countryside recognise this fact. Responsible fox management includes maintaining a healthy population at a level at which it can thrive without threatening livestock or other wildlife. Foxhunting is the most natural method of management: by its nature, it takes out the old, sick and injured foxes, and there is no risk of wounding. If the fox is caught, it is killed within seconds. If the fox goes to ground, it will either be left unharmed or the landowner may ask that it be killed by the hunt's terrierman. The strict rules governing terrier work laid down by the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) ensure there is no unnecessary suffering. Foxhunting does not just help control fox numbers. Landowners with an interest in foxhunting plant and maintain coverts, woodlands and copses for the benefit of all wildlife. Few farmers want to see the fox exterminated, but those who support hunting are more inclined to tolerate foxes on their land, as long as their numbers are controlled.

As MPs prepare to vote whether or not to ban hunting, BBC News Online spoke to Tony Banks MP, a fierce opponent of hunting and to Richard Burge, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, who is in favour of the pursuit. Here they put forward their arguments for and against hunting with hounds. Against Foxhunting - Tony Banks MP
It's a straightforward issue as far as I'm concerned. It's a matter of stopping cruelty to animals. The hunting of foxes, mink, hare-coursing, and deer-hunting involves cruelty to animals - these are not recognised as sports, they're to do with blood-lust, and they're to do with cruelty and they should be banned. I've consistently supported a ban, and I'm pleased to say that a great majority of members of parliament also support a ban and so do the majority of people of the country, both in rural and urban areas. Confident of a ban: Tony Banks MP
