Is U.S. Safe From Foxhunting Debate? Laura Howden
National Geographic News
May 31, 2002
A ban on foxhunting, proposed in England and recently passed by lawmakers in Scotland, reflects a majority view that killing animals for sport is a cruel and uncivilized pastime. The age-old tradition, spread worldwide during Great Britain's empire-building days, has its U.S. counterpart. Foxhunting in the States is steeped in tradition from the motherland, but with one important difference: The purpose is to chase, but not kill, the fox. Guardian Unlimited' Red foxes were imported from England because the native grey fox climbs trees, making the hunt exceedingly difficult. This one was photographed in Montana.

Pulse of the Planet In the U.S. hounds are trained to pursue the fox until it goes to ground (finds cover in one of its holes). The hounds "mark" the spot by barking at the hole and are then rewarded and called away. Typically the fox is unharmed. In England hunt objectives are significantly different. Hounds that have successfully tracked a fox are trained to pull it or dig it out of its hole, and the fox is killed. The holes may also be stopped up to prevent the fox from taking cover.

New Labour has prepared a bill on hunting consisting of three options, ranging from a ban to self-regulation. The hand of the government can be discerned in the option that prescribes a ban - which will create a totalitarian regime of policing, with powers to enter and search without a warrant, to confiscate animals and equipment, and to place the onus of proof on the accused. It will ensure that hundreds of thousands of law-abiding people will be turned overnight into criminals. This novel departure in English legal history can be explained - but it cannot be justified. The explanation is simple: bigotry. This bigotry has been fuelled by class prejudice, by historical resentments, by the fanaticism of the 'animal rights' movement, and by a wilful refusal to study the facts. And although the government commissioned its own inquiry into hunting with dogs (1), it seems to have taken no interest in the result. In fact, the commission of inquiry, under Lord Burns, produces no evidence that could conceivably support a ban on hunting, and a great amount of evidence to show that a ban would be oppressive and unjust: a gross act of contempt towards a rooted and traditional way of life on which many people depend not only for their recreation but for the social web which sustains them. The fact is explicitly recognised by the Burns report, which also supports the conclusion that up to 8000 jobs depend directly on hunting.

A Foxhunting Jamboree
Reprinted from Homing In column in 73 Magazine, January 1997 When did you first hear about radio direction finding (RDF)? Since it has become a tool for finding downed aircraft and stolen cars, today's school kids probably get a vague notion of it early on. Sadly, they aren't told that it can also be great fun for them. A recent e-mail exchange with Tom Stewart K3TS brought back memories of my introduction to RDF. Tom wrote a classic article about two-meter hidden transmitter hunting in New Jersey for the September 1957 issue of QST. I was 10 years old at the time and studying for my ham ticket, faithfully trying to copy W1AW code practice every night on my drifty Hallicrafters S-38D receiver. That QST issue was one of my first ham radio magazines. Tom's tales of T-hunt trickery got me eager to try the sport. When my Novice license arrived the following spring, I agitated at the radio club in our town of 11,000 souls to get the group to hold some hidden transmitter hunts. Even though Novices had two-meter phone privileges at the time, we were a hundred miles from the nearest two-meter activity and there were no repeaters to bridge the gap. Finally, the club scheduled a hunt on 75 meter AM, where most mobile operating was done in those days. I somehow managed to lash together a two-tube 75-meter converter with vibrator power supply and connect it to the broadcast receiver in the family's gas-guzzler convertible. Of course I had to talk Dad into driving. Bemused by the whole thing, he agreed.

George Jones and Charles Clover. Tony Blair was facing open revolt in the Labour Party last night over a compromise proposal to allow foxhunting under certain conditions. Labour MPs described as a fudge the new Hunting Bill which would outlaw hare coursing and stag hunting in England and Wales but would let foxhunting continue if it were given the goahead by an independent registrar. Ratting and rabbiting with dogs would also be allowed.

Team USA forming for 2004 ARDF World Championships
Brno, Czech, September 7 - 12, 2004
Every two years, hams from around the world gather to see who is best at on-foot hidden transmitter hunting. USA has been represented at every one of these ARDF World Championships since 1988, and 2004 will be no exception. Team USA is now forming for the 12th World Championships which take place near Brno in the Czech Republic from September 7 through 12. There will be separate events on eighty meters and two meters, each with five transmitters scattered in a forest that can encompass 1000 acres or more. If you are interested in attending the World Championships as a member of Team USA, now is the time to act. Each country may send up to three competitors in each of nine age categories, five for males and four for females, in accordance with rules of the International Amateur Radio Union . Team members are responsible for their own transportation expenses to and from Czech. In accordance with IARU procedures, I have submitted USA's Letter of Intent to Participate to the Czech organizers. Fifteen stateside ARDFers have already expressed strong interest in attending. Their current ages range from 11 to 60. But it's not too late to put in your own name for Team USA consideration.

VK3YNG Foxhunt Sniffer Instruction Manual
(Version 1.3, November 2002)
The VK3YNG Foxhunt Sniffer is a specially designed synthesised VHF direction finding receiver covering 120MHz and 144MHz bands. The receiver is designed for quickly finding the direction of beacons or hidden transmitters. Anything from distant weak signals to very close "sniffing" of transmitters running many watts of output power can be pin pointed accurately without suffering "overload" problems that plague other designs. Full auto-ranging operation allows the operator to quickly and intuitively locate the source of a signal without twiddling knobs or watching meters. The operator is freed to concentrate on more important things such as negotiating terrain or reading maps. The unit is also available in a fully tested Board level format for those who wish to integrate the unit into other equipment or build their own housing. Introduction

Introduction
The VK3YNG sniffer is designed to allow quick, easy and accurate determination of the direction of a transmitted signal in either the 120-123MHz or 143-150MHz bands. The sniffer provides enough sensitivity to determine the direction of a signal from many kilometres away. This is useful for ARDF or Radio Sport use. It also provides enough attenuation to accurately determine the direction of signals right up to the source of the signal without suffering from overload or compression effects.

As MPs prepare to vote whether or not to ban hunting, BBC News Online spoke to Tony Banks MP, a fierce opponent of hunting and to Richard Burge, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, who is in favour of the pursuit. Here they put forward their arguments for and against hunting with hounds. Against Foxhunting - Tony Banks MP
It's a straightforward issue as far as I'm concerned. It's a matter of stopping cruelty to animals. The hunting of foxes, mink, hare-coursing, and deer-hunting involves cruelty to animals - these are not recognised as sports, they're to do with blood-lust, and they're to do with cruelty and they should be banned. I've consistently supported a ban, and I'm pleased to say that a great majority of members of parliament also support a ban and so do the majority of people of the country, both in rural and urban areas. Confident of a ban: Tony Banks MP
We keep hearing about the rights of the minority but what about the rights of the majority?

Foxhunting for spectators and riders
Riders and spectators that have done a little research on foxuhunting will better enjoy the hunt and its horses whether from the sidelines or the saddle.
Foxhunting originated in pre-industrial England with the purpose of eradicating foxes that preyed upon the landowner's livestock. Since other methods of fox control at that time were unsuitable gassing was not yet invented and poison and trapping were indiscriminate hunting with hounds on horseback was most effective. Hounds were trained to follow the scent of the particular fox or group of foxes responsible for the livestock damage. Hunters would follow on horseback to ensure the dogs did not stray. Once the fox was located, the lead dog would kill the fox with a swift bite to the neck, or the hunter would shoot it at close range. To this day, the main purpose of foxhunting as a means of fox population control has not changed. bodyOffer(25042) Although the history of foxhunting is rather simple and straightforward, the actual hunt itself is quite complex. Hunting rules in the field are as varied as the clubs that sponsor the hunts, and both riders and spectators would benefit from understanding the basic organization of the hunt.
