La Mothe Le Vayer explique qu'en rendant le corps robuste et en " fortifiant la complexion ", elle dispose les hommes aux fatigues de la guerre dont elle est une petite image, " et quelques uns l'ont nommée pour cela un prélude du dieu Mars ". La chasse traditionnellement était jugée agréable et utile. Louis XIV chasse au moins trois fois par semaine. Il a abandonné assez vite la chasse au vol, cette chasse au faucon ou au milan que ses ancêtres ont constamment pratiquée. Il se contente de la chasse à courre et de la chasse au fusil avec des chiens couchants. Pour le plaisir du roi, on constitue des réserves : Le parc aux cerfs de Versailles, une faisanderie.... Le roi dispose de nombreux chiens et chiennes, il a pris l'habitude de leur donner à manger tous les jours après le dîner. Le grand veneur, François , duc de La Rochefoucauld , joue un rôle important , c'est un des confidents du roi.
