History of Falconry
The antiquity of falconry is very great. There appears to be little doubt that it was practiced in Asia at a very remote period, for which we have the concurrent testimony of various Chinese and Japanese works. It appears to have been known in China some 2000 years B.C., and the records of a king Wen Wang who reigned over a province of that country in 689 B.C. proves that the art was at that time in very high favor. In Japan it appears to have been known at least 600 years B.C., and probably at an equally early date in India, Arabia, Persia and Syria. Sir A. H. Layard, considered that in an ancient drawing found by him in the ruins of Khorsabad ‘‘there appeared to be a falconer bearing a hawk on his wrist,’’ from which it would appear to have been known there some 1700 years B.C. In all the above-mentioned countries of Asia it is practiced at the present day Little is known of the early history of falconry in Africa, but from very ancient Egyptian carvings and drawings it seems to have been known there many ages ago.’ It was probably also in vogue in the countries of Morocco, Oran, Algiers, Tunis and Egypt, at the same time as in Europe. The older writers on falconry, English and continental, often mention Barbary and Tunisian falcons. It is still practiced in Egypt.

    INTRODUCTION
My name is Roy Priest. I live in Ladner, beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I was introduced to falconry through a Sportsman's Show in 1963. George Galicz, a well known local falconer, was exhibiting his birds of prey. I was mesmerized by the beautiful male Kestrel he had on display. George let me hold it on my bare hand and I was hooked. In order to be able to have a bird like that he told me I had to join the B.C. Falconry Association and get permission from my parents. They were used to me bringing all manner of animals home and readily agreed. The first bird I trained was a Red-tailed Hawk. That particular bird was probably the tamest bird I ever had. We were inseparable. Since that time I have flown Kestrels, Red tails, Peregrines, Prairies, Merlins, Luggers, Coopers, Harris and Goshawks in B.C., Lanners in England and Merlins and Prairies in Saskatchewan. While in Saskatchewan I assisted in the release of Peregrines in Downtown Regina . There had been successful releases in Saskatoon and this was to be Regina's first. I acted as a hack attendant, feeding and tracking the birds for about 2 months.

Hunting with Birds (falconry). falconry and the Law. All wild hawks in Britain are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
    http://www.countryside-alliance.org/edu/edu2-3-6.htm

    Hunting with Birds (falconry)
Falconry, or hawking, is the sport of taking wild prey (or quarry) in its natural habitat by means of trained hawks. It has its own language, equipment and tradition, much of it largely unaltered since medieval times. Falconry has never been easy, and the temporary enthusiasm caused by a free-flying display of hawks at a country fair is not sufficient justification for taking up this most exacting sport. However the relationship between hawk and man is immensely rewarding. Birds of prey were very much protected in the Middle Ages. In the 1950s and '60s modern agriculture, with the widespread use of toxic chemicals, caused untold damage to the native raptor population. At the same time, due to their rarity, unscrupulous egg collectors added to the problem. In the last few decades, however, falconers and conservationists have worked together to lobby for improved legislation and greater awareness. Today, birds of prey are thriving in the United Kingdom and domestic breeding programmes are proving most successful. No more than 3,000 people practice falconry as a field sport in the UK. It is essentially a solitary and time-consuming pastime, with the training and managing of a bird of prey requiring skill and dedication. Falconers have to plan their social and working lives around their sport.

The Peregrine Fund founded the Archives of American Falconry in 1986 to preserve the history and heritage of this ancient sport in the Americas. Falconers have always been leaders in conservation of birds of prey. That historical role is primary to our organization's establishment of the Archives. This Archives is unique in the world. Originally, i ts principal focus wa s collection and preservation of materials associated with American falconers. With the passage of time, however, it has expanded to a worldwide perspective. C ollection s include correspondence, photographs, equipment, art work, publications, and much more. The library is the most comprehensive on the subject in English and continues to grow. The Archives also records oral history interviews with pioneer falconers and serves as repository for the corporate records of the North American Falconers Association.
