2.9 FALCONRY
Falconry has been practised in England since Saxon times. The invention of the gun and the enclosure of common land led to its rapid decline, although enthusiasts have kept the sport alive in Britain. In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of birds of prey in captivity and in the number of people who keep them, frequently more for free-flying or exhibition than for true falconry, the pursuit of quarry. The principal reason is the success of captive breeding, which has ensured that sought-after foreign species no longer have to be imported. Lanner and saker falcons, red-tailed buzzards and Harris hawks are among the most popular non-native birds that are bred in captivity in this country for falconry. As they have become more readily available so they have become less expensive. This also applies to native species like the peregrine falcon. It is the common objective of Government and responsible falconers to achieve sustainable captive-breeding to avoid the unnecessary use of wild birds.

Falconry
Hunting with birds of prey probably originated with the nomadic peoples of the Asiatic plains. The nomads used their tame falcons to help procure the food necessary for survival, in perhaps one of the first methods of hunting ever used by man. Later, falconry developed into a sport, and this fascinating co-operation between man and bird is one of the oldest of all open-air pastimes. Falconry has long been regarded as a noble art. The falconer was seen as a figure of authority - mounted on his horse, surrounded by his hunting companions and with his falcon descending from the sky to rest on his hand. As he controlled his falcon, so he controlled his territory. Throughout history the falcon has been the symbol of high birth and luxury, and its care and training have always been given particular importance. It is known as a superlative hunter, and is particularly valuable in the desert, where climatic conditions are extreme and no protection from the elements is available. Here, the falcon can pursue its prey from a great distance, and with a speed and accuracy second to none. It is no wonder that the desert nomads have always appreciated the stamina and hunting instincts of the falcon. The Bedouin people in particular used this bird to hunt game, which provided an important and nutritious addition to an otherwise monotonous diet. Today, the Arabian Peninsula is one of the last places in the world where falconry remains an important sporting activity. Although falconry clubs do exist in America and in almost all European countries, it is in the Gulf region that the sport is held in truly high regard and commands the greatest interest. The people of the Gulf have a strong personal commitment to falconry and ensure that it is practised in the correct manner, with the proper respect due to Islamic customs.

It's purpose is to diffuse knowledge of falconry as it is practiced in Scandinvavia, the conditions of falconry in Scandinavia, . If some of the readers are inspired to take up falconry themselves, please consider that you do not become a falconer on the internet - nor by reading ever so many of the books referred to on these pages. Most of the articles are written from the assumption that the reader have little or no knowledge of falconry at all. Falconers might find the addresses, the booklist in "Bibliotheca Accipitraria", the hawking stories in "Round the Smoking Room Fire", the art in "Galleria Accipitraria", the pages on legislation, culture and history worthwhile.

a bit about
Three Counties Falconry School A bit of inf. (about me) I was born in 1951 and, from an early age being fond of all animals, somewhere along the way I became aware of Birds of Prey. Not until studying for 'O' levels did I come upon a number of falconry related books at the local library. These books spent more time with me than on the library shelves. In 1969, while on holiday, I visited the 'Tropical Bird Gardens' in Rode, Somerset [near to where I now live] and came upon a poster for "The Falconry Centre" at Newent, Glous., - now the "National Bird of Prey Centre". My first visit and meeting with Philip Glasier (the then owner of the centre) sealed.my love for Birds of Prey and Falconry.
S Prior to moving to W. Yorkshire [1981] I also assisted in the rehabilitation and release of various injured birds of prey; Kestrels, Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Hobbies and Merlins as well as various owls - Tawny, Barn, Short-eared and Little. Author with a 1995 male
Redtail, "Fiddich" son of Belle
