Dressage a definition
Dressage is one of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines. It is a programme of suppling, balancing and obedience work that prepares a horse for future pleasure-riding or competition, Western or English. One of the most popular horse sports, "combined training", includes a dressage test as part of the competition format. In the modern world, dressage has two correct meanings:
  • the basic schooling of every riding horse. Under the guise of "flat work", it is what hunter/jumper trainers do with their horses when they are not schooling over fences
  • a type of rapidly growing competition, open to virtually every kind and size of horse and any age of rider. It is true that when talented horses and riders compete, you will see a kind of beauty and poise that reminds you of top notch figure skating or gymnastics, and there may be moments when you think, "This has become an art; it is like ballet." As one dressage judge says, "You can hear the angels singing." But the sport of dressage has a far wider range than just angels singing. In dressage training, the natural movements a horse can make on his own, free in the pasture, are repeated as exercises. These range from simple patterns and circles at the walk, trot and canter to movements in extreme collection, such as the piaffe (which is actually part of the showing-off of the stallion).

26th May 2004 Despite international condemnation, the commercial hunt for Canadian seal pups began on March 24 across the ice floes of eastern Canada. The hunt, which is heavily subsidized by the Canadian government, is expected to take as many as 350,000 seals over the next few weeks. Seals may be killed once they begin to moult their fluffy white coats – as young as 12 days old. Ninety-five percent of the seals killed in the hunt are under three months of age. IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) representatives are monitoring and documenting this year's hunt. In the last five years alone, IFAW has submitted video evidence of more than 660 probable violations of Canada's marine mammal regulations to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). To date, no charges have been placed. These abuses include skinning live seals, dragging live seals across the ice with hooks ("hakapik") and shooting seals and leaving them to suffer Sealers are required by law to perform a simple test to determine if the seal is dead before skinning it. IFAW observers rarely witness any sealers performing this test. IFAW submitted the footage to the DFO as evidence of extreme cruelty to animals and gross infractions of the marine mammal regulations that control the commercial seal hunt. Last month, a DFO representative contacted IFAW to say they would not be pressing charges

    http://www.uset.com/html/dressage.cfm
The word Dressage (pronounced dress-AHGE) is derived from the French verb "dresser," which simply means "to train." It has come to denote both a training method and a competitive sport. As a training method it prepares the horse for any number of disciplines, from show jumping to western reining. As a sport, competitive dressage challenges horse and rider to strive for ever greater levels of precision and harmony. THE ART OF CLASSICAL HORSEMANSHIP
Although dressage has its roots in classical Greek horsemanship and was influenced by the knights in shining armor of the Middle Ages, it was not until the Renaissance that dressage was recognized as an important equestrian pursuit. The great riding masters of this period developed a logical training system which has changed little over the last hundred years. What has changed is the reason for the training. The European aristocrats displayed their well trained horses in elaborate equestrian pageants; today's dressage riders test their horses' ability in competition.
Dressage horses can be of any breed, sex, age, color or size. Exceptional basic paceswalk, trot and cantertogether with a good temperament and sound conformation are what riders look for in a potential dressage horse. The horse should have athletic paces, be light on its feet and have the scope to take short, springy strides as well as free, long and swinging ones.
