Dragon Boat Racing in South Africa
An ancient, dramatic, colourful, oriental water-sport South African Dragon Boat Racing Clubs warmly welcome all dragon boaters and new-comers to join in our practice sessions. This spectacular and exciting team sport originated in China over 2300 years ago
and came to South Africa in 1992 when two beautiful ceremonial wooden dragon boats were presented to Cape Town by our Taiwanese sister city. As well as the majestic wooden flag-catching boats, Cape Town and Johannesburg have fibreglass racing dragon boats taken from the Hong Kong mould.

As one of the three largest Chinese festivals of the year, this mythical celebration can now be witnessed around the world. To experience a dragon boat race - either watching or participating - is a thrill in itself and can be enjoyed by everyone. You'll watch as long, multicoloured boats, with frightening dragons' heads, long tails, and scaley bodies, splash through the water. You'll see men, women, and children grunt and sweat as they push themselves harder and faster to be the first to the finish line. You'll hear the crowds screaming and cheering for their favorite team, while the drummers pound on their drums and yell at the paddlers. The event is not intended to be quiet and peaceful but loud and exciting - a celebration! To observe the Chinese dragon boat races of today, you can only dream of its meager beginnings. A time when superstition determined how a person lived. In fact, dragon boat racing began more than 2000 years ago when a group of superstitious people believed that the boat racing would ensure prosperous and bountiful crops. Their celebrations took place on the summer solstice - the time of year typically associated with disease and death and when man felt most helpless against the powers of nature.

Dragon Boats and Outriggers in the Berkeley Marina
This is a description of a short-term access solution for the Berkeley Dragons or other dragon boat or outrigger organization. This proposal suggests how a paddling club, team, or youth program could take advantage of the following resources in the Berkeley Marina:
  • off-peak traffic capacity on land and water
  • free dock space normally not accessible to conventional boats
  • the facilities of existing non-profit organizations
Developing a new practice site and building the organization to go with it is often a chicken-and-egg problem: With no berthing facilities, it is impossible to acquire boats. With no boats, membership growth can be difficult. Without a large membership or participant base, it is very difficult to acquire berthing facilities. The Marina berthing option has the advantage of being available on very short lead time and at very low cost because it uses existing facilities that are not marketable to conventional boats. This could clear the path for an organization to acquire one or more boats and begin a new growth cycle. In the long term, it is anticipated that a successful dragon boat or outrigger organization would move to its own dedicated facility elsewhere on the waterfront.
