Our Mission
"To each year deliver a first class dragon boat race festival accessible to all that brings together and gives back to our diverse community through team building, charitable fund raising and a cross cultural experience that is fun for everyone."
The Dragon Boating Tradition
The Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival is part of a larger Chinese cultural tradition that goes back 2,400 years. It began on the life-sustaining riverbanks in the valleys of southern China as a fertility rite performed to ensure bountiful crops. The first participants held their celebration on the fifth day of the lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The race was held to avert misfortune and encourage the rains needed for prosperity. The object of their worship was the dragon. Also known as Poet's Day, it commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a poet and Minister of State during the Chou Dynasty. Qu had protested against the corrupt government and was stripped of his office as Minister of State. He wandered about the countryside, unhappy and dejected. When local fishermen realized Qu had disappeared into the river, they raced out in their boats to save him, beating drums to scare off the fish that they thought would eat his body. They also dropped rice dumplings in the water as a sacrifice to his spirit. The scene of the fishermen racing out to save Qu Yuan is reenacted every year in the form of dragon boat races.

... Our History In May 2002 a group of 4 women became acquainted at a weekly exercise class specifically designed for those recovering from breast cancer surgery. During this period, they were introduced to the idea of dragon boating for breast cancer survivors. No dragon boat races or teams existed in the province of New Brunswick at this time. In August 2002 these women met and formed plans to make dragon boat racing a reality for breast cancer survivors in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The goal was “ to be on the river in the spring of 2003 as soon as the ice came off the river Throughout the autumn and winter of 2002, more enthusiastic participants joined up. Other breast cancer dragon boat teams shared their time, their materials, and their insight to help Breasts Ahoy start up.

Sport Overview What is dragon boat racing? This is sprint paddling like no other kind of paddling! Much more vigorous than recreational canoeing, and involving many more people than rowing, dragon boating is a fun and athletic challenge for teams of 20 paddlers. Dragon boating is a cousin to sprint paddling C-1, C-2, and outrigger racing sports. Dragon boat races are commonly 500 meters, but there are also 250m, 1000m and 2000m races at international levels. During the race, a drummer at the front controls the team's tempo, while a steersman at the rear navigates the boat. Paddling at stroke rates of 60 to 85 spm, the team will furiously "pull water" to beat opponents to the finish line. At over 4500 lbs per boat, this is an amazing feat of coordinated people power! How fast is a dragon boat race?

18-20 June 2004 (Starts 3rd Fri of every Jun)
An exciting series of races delights spectators during the event. Every boat has a cox - who beats a rhythm on ceremonial drums to keep the rowers in time. The winners of the races are crowned king for the year, a great honour among the Chinese in Penang.
Legend has it that as they attempted to rescue him, they beat drums to scare fish away and threw dumplings into the sea to keep the fish from eating his body. During the festival period, people eat rice-and-meat dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and many look forward to swimming, or even simply dipping their hands in the water, to symbolise trying to save him.

The136 teams joined hands to keep the event the largest in Hong Kong. Thousands of athletes took part in the months of practice, which delivered a very positive message to the community: sports and exercise are the key factor to health, and with collective effort, we can cut our way through any adversity. By Anne

My first adventure in the Dragon Boat Bar in the Hong Kong Hilton rather put me off mixing with the boys in khaki for a while and I confined my activities to hotels in Kowloon for the next couple of years. Finally the Vietnam War began to wind down and, almost simultaneously, I discovered and joined the Beaumont Society. This was a tremendous breakthrough for me in terms of understanding and acceptance of where and what I was - no more was I the only one in the world like me (not the most original thought I know but it was pretty groundbreaking at the time).
The other outcome of joining the Society was that through it I found Rose, the founder of the 'Seahorse Society' in Australia, who was to become (and still is) a lifelong friend. For a long time we were the only BS members in Hong Kong, so we had to make our own fun, as they say. This basically meant getting together from time to time in each others' houses or, about once a month, dinner excursions in which one of us became the masculine accessory of the other.
Remember, in those days every time we went out dressed we had to pass; we both had everything to lose if our secret came out. Hong Kong was still very uptight in many ways, wide open to all forms of hetero sex but nothing else. Homo sex was still actually illegal and understanding of tranny stuff nil. A man on your arm was therefore the best accessory of all, and as far as I know neither of us was ever 'read'. Mind you, the adrenalin surge every time we went out was right up there with bungee jumping!

Before moving to Pittsburgh from Portland, Ore., this summer, Amy Evans could hardly have been described as a fire-breathing promoter of dragon boating, a 2,000-year-old sport that originated in China. She had paddled in Portland for just one season four years ago on the 40-foot-long, canoe-like boats, which feature fierce-looking dragon heads on their bows and scaly tails on their sterns. Inside each boat, 18-22 people sit two abreast, paddling in sync (ideally) as a tiller at the back of the boat steers and a drummer in the front beats the paddling rhythm the "heartbeat of the dragon." But then Evans heard that two Hong Kong-style dragon boats would be winging their way to Pittsburgh, courtesy of the city Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Greater Pittsburgh Sister City Association, as part of the 20th anniversary of the relationship between Pittsburgh and Wuhan, China. Evans, the new academic adviser for the undergraduate program in Pitt's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, thought: What a great way to meet people, get a cardiovascular workout and lure traditionally river-shy Pittsburghers out to play on the water.

    Origin of dragon boats
Dragon boat racing is a Chinese tradition that commemorates Qu Yuan poet, scholar, diplomat and adviser to the King of Chu during China's turbulent Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.). Threatened by Qu Yuan's policies of rooting out corruption and forging an alliance with the neighboring state of Qi, his enemies embarked on a devious campaign to discredit Qu Yuan. It worked: The king demoted and eventually banished him. Weakened by internal power struggles, the capital city of Chu fell to the up-and-coming Qin state in 278 B.C. A grief-stricken Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. Legend says that the river dragon, sharing Qu Yuan's grief at the defeat of his country, flew away with him to a peaceful place. Meanwhile, villagers rushed to their boats in an attempt to save the much-admired Qu Yuan, slapping the water with their oars and banging on drums to scare fish away. Dragon boating is said to have evolved over the next few centuries as fishermen raced their long, sleek craft against one another during festivals honoring Qu Yuan. Over time, competitors began building ornately decorated vessels that were faster than their everyday fishing boats. Teak hulls eventually gave way to fiberglass.

The year of the dragon boat
by damon vis-dunbar In China, around 400 B.C., people began taking to canoes on the fifth day of the fifth moon in remembrance of Ch'u Yuan, a celebrated national poet and statesman. In thesepainfully dry summer months, they also hoped that this colourful demonstration would help quench a thirst for rain. Now, more than 2000 years later, a dripping Vancouver looked to the sky in search of light, and celebrated with dragon boats in the name of cultural harmony. Vancouver once again held its annual dragon boat festival on June 15-23, this year adding the first world championship dragon boat race to be held outside of Asia. Competitors from around the world brought the incessant booming of drums, stiff competition, and, of course, an international agreement on music, food, and beer. "I mentioned black sheep earlier," announced one of the two public announcers who would provide much unintentional humour within their friendly ramblings over the weekend, "and I just want to say that this was in no way a slight on the New Zealand team." The announcer most likely mis-read the team's name, Black Dragon, but as much as it garnered a collection of chuckles, the apology nicely reflects the careful and tentative nature of tolerance and cultural celebration that lies at the heart of this event. As shallow as it may seem, that nature also swims in all the colours that make up the festival's host city.
