Dragon boating is part sport, part social celebration
Robyn Dochterman, Staff writer August 24, 2001 DRAGONBOAT "Welcome to dragon boating," said the guy next to me in the oversized canoe. The rain had stopped, but it was still cold in Thunder Bay, Ontario, even in the middle of July. In addition to us, there were 18 others, paddles in hand, eager for the race to begin. This team, the Duluth Dragons, didn't exactly invite me to paddle with them. They didn't even know me. But when two of their teammates were delayed in traffic, a race official offered me a chance to take a seat in the boat so they wouldn't be disqualified. I nervously grabbed a paddle, confessed I was an absolute beginner and got a 30-second lesson on the quick, up-and-down stroke, on using my back and legs for power, and on rocking the boat. I was about to learn what all dragon boaters know: The race is a 2 1/2-minute sprint of muscle-searing pain, blurry breathlessness and absolute adrenaline. It is cold water splashing your face and soaking your feet. It is your heart and the drum beating together, your paddle and those of your teammates' slicing the water in perfect reaching-and-rocking synchronicity.

Contacts Dragon Boating The Hong Kong Island Paddle Club seeks to challenge the existing standards of dragonboat racing in Hong Kong. By striving to improve our quality of racing and strengthening our own performance year by year, we throw down the gauntlet to many of the local teams who have long been favored to win in the past. We approach dragon boating as a sport and provide opportunities for our members to paddle all year for fitness and for fun, which is a much different attitude than that of many of the Hong Kong teams. Dragonboating is still very much a festival activity here and even the more competitive teams only commit to a very short training season. Over the years we have spread our dragons "talons" beyond the boundaries of Hong Kong and now compete throughout South East Asia each year. The Hong Kong International Dragonboat Festival is our "home" event, but each year you may see the "purple battalions" at any (or all) of the following events: Macau Dragonboat Festival Penang International Dragonboat Festival Singapore International Dragonboat Festival Taipei Dragonboat Festival Fuzhou International Dragonboat Festival Zhaoqing International Dragonboat Races Thailand Swanboat Races Perhaps it is just in the nature of Hong Kong. The turnover rate of our paddlers is high as our Club tends to attract many people from the Hong Kong expatriate community. Most people who come to Hong Kong from other countries stay a relatively short period of time. Many have no previous experience paddling at all much less dragon boating. It is an added difficulty for our Club having to train up first year paddlers to take on the best teams in Hong Kong and the world, though it could be considered one of the more exciting aspects of our Club.

49. Paddlers Anonymous Dragon Boat Club - The Stroke
The Dragon Boat Stroke. The most important skill to master in dragon boating is, of course, the stroke . And that s the basics of the dragon boat stroke!
http://www.paddlersanonymous.com/stroke.html
The Dragon Boat Stroke The most important skill to master in dragon boating is, of course, the stroke . The paddling technique is simple enough that a beginner can begin an approximation of the technique in his or her first few practices, but to move the boat with the power required in competitive racing requires a constant effort to refine the various elements of the stroke. Most beginners will find dragon boat paddling awkward, because it places you in an unnatural position: paddling on only one side of the body, pulling the water rather than pushing it (as in other paddle sports such as kayaking), and keeping the stroke all up in front of you. But with time, the body will become used to this positioning and it is then that true progress towards becoming a competitive dragon boat paddler will be made. There are 4 elements to the dragon boat stroke: Reach/extension, catch, pull, and exit. We'll examine each element separately. 1) Reach. Reach refers to the action of the paddler leading up to and beginning an individual stroke, though not the placing of the paddle into the water itself (see element number 2, "catch"). The paddler wants to place the paddle as far ahead of him or herself as possible, ideally stretching the paddle up past the bench immediately in front of the paddler. By placing the paddle as far ahead as possible, the paddler is maximizing the amount of time the paddle will be pulling through the water, and therefore maximizing the amount of force he or she is putting into making the boat move.

A wash-riding primer
by Fred Heese In a perfect dragon boat world, wash-riding during races does not exist.
In this magical world, the racing lanes are wide and deep enough, and moving markedly away from the centre of the lane in penalized by the race officials. Thus, the phenomenon of wash-riding or "surfing" — where another crew in the adjoining lane pulls a team along — is not a factor.
Unfortunately, there is no perfect world without wash-riding and these conditions are rarely met, even in continental or world championships. Like it or not, wash-riding has become invasive. NUTRITION

The Dragon Boat Chronicles
by Eric Mah
MTC Quarterly , Issue #24, September 1996 "¹w³Æ," screamed the start-man and the seventy-two oars snapped into ready position. "ÁÙ¨S!ÁÙ¨S!" came the frantic reply from the captain of the green uniformed team. "§ÚÌÁÙ¨S¦n!" The three other teams relaxed their stance. "Right side, pull us over and get us straightened out." After some finessing the dragon's head once again faced the end of the raceway. This time, as if seeming ready to get to the finish line, the boat remained straight in the starting blocks. Everyone took in the silence that had befallen the spectators on shore and breathed one last relaxing breath. "¹w³Æ," again yelled the start-man. The large red signal flag went up. Through the silence, the water lapping against the boats could be heard. Paddles were arched over the water, ready to plunge at the signal. Not a muscle moved. Then it came. Bang! All oars plunged into the still water and white foam and spray rose around the boats. Thus began the first race of the ®v¤j men's dragon boat team. This year's team was truly an international crowd with members faring from Canada, Panama, Belgium, England, France, Korea, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Holland, the Philippines, Australia, and the United States. "This year's team was truly an international mix," says the men's team captain, Robert Kinney (ª÷¥]§B). "It provided a great opportunity outside the classroom for people to exchange ideas and culture."

56. Dragon Boats And The Eastshore State Park, Letter From Shirley Gee
dragon boating is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world and its growth in the Bay Area in the last five years has been phenomenal.
http://www.well.com/user/pk/waterfront/ESPdragon-letter.html
This is a letter from Shirley Gee, of the International Dragon Boat Association, to the planning consultants conducting the workshops for the Eastshore State Park. Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001
From: Shirley S. T. Gee (sgee@worldnet.att.net)
To: Eastshore State Park (eastshore_statepark@hotmail.com) As the Eastshore State Park project is already underway, we would like to officially submit the following information for consideration and inclusion as you contemplate use for this public park: Dragon boating is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world and its growth in the Bay Area in the last five years has been phenomenal. With a rich history that goes back to China 2,000 years, it has rapidly become the sport of choice for communities who are trying to help youth navigate through their adolescent years physically and pschologically intact. It is through dragon boating that we teach youth the importance of being part of a broader community and the positive benefits which can be derived from such an association. Dragon boating is one of the most "inclusive" sports available and enables athletes of all abilities to participate; hence its popularity. A "couch potato" and football athlete can get into a boat and be "athletic equals". There are no superstars in dragon boating, just teammates. A dragon boat is a 48 foot canoe which seats 20 paddlers (two abreast), a drummer and a steerer. Teams race down lanes (3-12 lanes) for distances as short as 250 meters to as long as 1200 meters. With a crew of 25 per team (22 in a boat at a time), this sport teaches not only teamwork, but respect for their community and the environment in which they live and play. In the process they are also exposed to the concept of heritage and tradition which is important to the preservation of cultures.
