    5. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival
    Historical information about dragon boating.
    http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/dec97/holiday/boatz.html
The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival The Dragon Boat Festival is a lunar holiday, occurring on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first.
The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings. The celebration's is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.

Here is Jim’s bio in his own words: I like to tell people I have never worked a day in my life! Ever since I began my career as a disc-jockey at a small radio station in Midland Ontario, I have been living the dream. My first eight years were spent crossing the country at various radio stations doing all manners of work. My first T.V. gig was at CITY-TV in Toronto as an intern, then CFAC in Calgary for my first full time television job in 1980. It was in 1984 that TSN came calling, making me their first commentator, and I spent 17 years there doing whatever they asked me to do. It included tennis, hockey, rugby, equestrian, skiing, their half-hour news show, and at the top of the list, two Olympic games, 1988 in Calgary and 2000 in Sydney. Calling Karen Percy's bronze medal downhill at Nakiska was spectacular, but the gold medal tennis match by Nestor and Lareau in Sydney was by far the ultimate. I still get goose bumps thinking of that electric night.

Dragon Boating is an ancient sport, with an intriguing history. It was in the aftermath of the poet Qu Yuan's unfortunate death that the myth and pageantry of dragon boat racing was born. When news of his suicide reached the villagers, they immediately took to their boats, beating drums and their paddles to frighten fish and water dragons away and prevent them from eating the body of their fallen poet. To nourish his weakened spirit, villagers also began throwing bags of rice into the river. Both the act of beating drums and throwing rice to feed Qu Yuan's spirit are traditions that have carried through to today's dragon boat races. One of the rituals at the start of a dragon boat race is the awakening of the dragon. A taostic priest blesses the boat, and the dragon is awoken by coloring in the eyes on the dragon head. Many of the boats we race in Canada are fabricated by Six-Sixteen Dragon Boats Ltd. out of Vancouver, Canada. They seat 24 people, including one drummer and one steersperson. In Hong Kong, the standard boat seats 22 people. A powerful dragon boat team can generate enough horsepower to tow a water skier! For more information about modern dragon boating, visit the our
