COMMENTARY
The Victims of Dogfighting
We must not fail to suppress a blood sport popular among disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. Following our recent cover story on dogfighting in New Orleans ("Fight Clubs," July 10, 2001), several readers contacted this paper wanting to know how they could help curb the popularity of this gory sport. Most identified themselves as animal lovers disturbed by the pastime's impact on its most visible victims the dogs. Some suggested raising reward money to motivate citizens to call police when they witness dogfighting in their communities. Others proposed helping the SPCA's volunteer efforts in local schools to impress upon kids that dogs do endure pain. Their concern is justified and their ideas are good ones. Canines regularly turn up at area animal shelters displaying evidence of dogfighting. The local SPCA's policy is to destroy those animals. And because the sport favors the American Pit Bull Terrier, dogs born to the breed suffer from a maligned reputation as natural-born killers. In fact, pit bulls become vicious only after their owners raise and train them to behave that way; the dogs make loving and loyal companions when given the chance. As a result of public hysteria, even the gentlest pit bulls and pit bull mixes are often difficult for shelters to adopt out. But these animals aren't the only victims of dogfighting. This illicit sport, which pits dogs against each another until one is too injured or unwilling to continue, is popular in New Orleans' inner city, and particularly among young men and boys. Local psychiatrists are concerned about the impact this has on youths. The values learned in early years of development last a lifetime, stresses Dr. Ed Foulks, a psychiatry professor who specializes in post-traumatic stress disorder at Tulane University's School of Medicine. And for those involved in pastimes such as dogfighting, Foulks says, "violence becomes a nonchalant part of everyday life."

Internet unleashes US dogfight craze
By Doug Simpson New Orleans January 15, 2004 Print this article Email to a friend Though illegal in all states and a felony in 47, dogfighting is on the rise in the United States, particularly outside its traditional stronghold in the Deep South. Lawmakers and humane officials are seeking new ways to attack the trend, however, and investigators see a "gold mine" in a list of thousands of potential suspects seized in a recent bust, along with scarred dogs, steroids and canine treadmills. More than 100 web sites sell pit bull training gear. About a dozen dogfighting magazines publish regularly, up from three in the 1980s. The FBI keeps no statistics on the activity, but authorities estimate - from breeders' advertisements, magazine subscription lists and previous arrests - that at least 40,000 people in the US breed or own pit bulls for fighting. "It's definitely on the upswing. Communication on the internet has made dogfighting accessible without the inherent risks of arrest that used to go along with it," said Mark Kumpf, a Virginia investigator with the National Illegal Animal Fighting Task Force, made up of US Department of Agriculture officers and local police nationwide.

...I am writing for some information on a case I have pending July of this year. Unfortunately my dogs ( 3 pit bulls and they are still loving ) attacked and killed another dog. The county has put so many restrictions on me that I am unable to save them. Also there is a possibility that I might have to pay some fines for my dogs running loose at the time and not having their shots. Where can I find some information on such a case, and do you have any idea what the max they can fine me for this incident. Thanks, Concerned Owner Dear Concerned Owner,
Unfortunately, I don't think that you will need to pay nearly enough. Generally, animals are treated as property. You will probably be required to compensate the dog's guardian for the amount of money the dog was "worth." As far as fines are concerned, that information should be readily available to you through the county. I don't know the mindset of the family involved, however, if I were in their position, I would be doing everything in my power to see you prosecuted as far as legally possible. I don't know the details of how your dogs came to be loose, but judging by the fact that they were unlicensed and unvaccinated, there seems to be a pattern of irresponsibility involved. Your actions have caused so much pain and suffering, not only to the those directly involved, but to the breed as a whole. Responsible pit bull guardians pay for your actions in insurance premiums and the restrictions of dangerous dog legislation, let alone the damage done to the breed's reputation.

May. 19, 2004 07:10 AM CHICAGO - The kid was 13, maybe 14 years old. He and a friend were talking to Sgt. Steve Brownstein, who heads Chicago's Animal Abuse Control Team, in the dim hallway of a Southwest Side apartment complex.
Brownstein and two fellow police officers were investigating a tip that two fighting dogs were being kept in the building. The two boys said they had been taking care of the dogs, pit bulls named Pinky and Shiny, discovered in an unlit, trash- and feces-filled, 9-by-12 foot electrical closet.
Brownstein made small talk: "Have you had dogs before?"
"Yeah," the kid said.
"What happened to them?"

Task force founder and League In Support of Animals executive director Jeff Dorson on February 9, 1999 formally complained about the inaction to police superintendent Richard Pennington. Raid and theft Eighteen of the pit bulls were stolen from the county animal shelter on Christmas Day, in a raid police attributed to operatives of American Pit Enforcers, APE for short, a clandestine organization of alleged weapons experts and martial arts experts who apparently travel the U.S. making a living stealing back fighting dogs who have been seized by police and/or humane investigators. Back to the shelter the dogs went, where shelter director Patricia Wilcox admitted her facilities were severely strained by having to keep them all indefinitely as evidence. The big New York bust came on January 7 in Allegany County, where 46 pit bulls were seized from William Reaves, 30, of Clarksville, and Charles Felton Jr., 40, of Rochester. Police about two weeks earlier seized approximately a dozen pit bulls from a site in Orleans County, but whether the raids were related was not clear. There were indications in local media coverage that the alleged Reaves/Felton operation was the same one that local police were reportedly set to raid in 1997, when suddenly all the dogs disappeared.

Gauthier Craig J. Forsyth In all societies, manhood means more than simply being born male. Manhood is a status that must be achieved through socially constructed means. Gilmore (1990, p. 17) states that... ...true manhood is a precious and elusive status beyond mere maleness, a hortatory image that men and boys aspire to and that their culture demands of them as a measure of belonging. If manhood is seen as precious in all cultures one would expect this status to be even more precious in patriarchal systems where the concept of manhood embodies privilege and power. The United States is a prime example of such a culture. In particular, the Southern region of the U.S., where recent empirical research suggests gender roles have a more marked tendency toward traditionalism and patriarchy (Hurlbert and Bankston, 1998), offers the ideal context in which to study aspirations toward, and expressions of, masculinity. The significance of sport went beyond its growing popularity as a pastime; it was also important as a cultural phenonomon. This dimension was what gave athletics its special significance for the redefinition of manhood at the turn of the century.

Treadmills, Breaking Sticks Allegedly Used To Train Pit Bulls
POSTED: 5:14 p.m. EST January 9, 2004
UPDATED: 6:30 p.m. EST January 9, 2004
HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. Deputies in Halifax County have cracked a dogfighting ring.
These treadmills were allegedly used to train pit bulls to fight in Halifax County. Authorities showed off on Friday some of the evidence allegedly used in the dogfighting ring. They said treadmills were modified to train pit bulls. Other devices called breaking sticks were allegedly used to open the dogs' jaws to break up a fight. "Our county is one of the biggest counties for this type of activity," said Robert Richardson, who is in charge of Halifax County's animal control enforcement. Michael Lynch, of Hollister, has been charged with a number of crimes, including dogfighting. Officers have the pit bulls secured in a remote area of the county. Richardson said he knows there are other rings operating in the area. He said finding them usually takes a tip from someone who notices something suspicious.

Dog Carcasses Turning Up Along Side Of Road
POSTED: 10:55 a.m. EST February 23, 2004
UPDATED: 11:10 a.m. EST February 23, 2004
CLAYTON, N.C. Some Johnston County neighbors are concerned that a dogfighting ring could be operating nearby. Dead dogs have turned up on the side of the road showing injuries consistant with fighting.
Some Johnston County homeowners believe a dogfighting ring might be operating near their neighborhood. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the reports. A man who said he wished to remain anonymous said he believes nine dogs that were dumped in the area were used for dogfighting. "You can tell it had been fighting by the scars and fur missing around its neck," he said about one dog. The man also documented what he saw by taking pictures, but when he called the Johnston County Sheriff's Office to complain, he would not leave his name or address, so an official report was never filed. When WRAL contacted the sheriff's office, a detective was immediately put on the case. "We have had some reports of dogfighting rings," Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.

Monday July 17 2000
Fashionable Brutality: Dogfighting on the Rise By Brian D. Crecente, an APBnews.com correspondent in Florida.
LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. (APBnews.com) Shack died amid the discarded cans and cigarette wrappers of Northwest Second Street, his bitten and bruised body lying in the knee-high weeds of a South Florida dirt alley. Tossed into a fighting pit with a trained and vicious dog, the pet pit bull lasted only 15 minutes. He was put there by Deroy Dawes, a 19-year-old who had found the dog wandering the streets of a coastal South Florida town a week earlier, police say. After the April 4 fight, Dawes told police he washed the blood from the dog's body, walked him to a nearby house and chained him to a backyard fence, where he died hours later. Shack's owner, Alonzo Austin, found him the same day and buried him where he lay. It was a week after Austin had reported the dog he had owned for three years missing. "I couldn't move him, I'd gone through so much," Austin said. "For me to see my baby like that, it really hurt me." Police arrested Dawes April 27 on felony charges of fighting animals and animal cruelty, making him the first person in Palm Beach County to be charged in five years. "He told us he fought Shack because he wanted to see what he could do," said Liz Roerich, an animal control officer in Boynton Beach, a small coastal city between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. "It's becoming fashionable for teens to have pit bulls and fight them."

Answers from Dr. Kromm - Aiming under dogfighting
Question by Mihity. quote (Mihity to Dr. Kromm) - In GURPS MECHA, how to aim under dogfighting? Dogfighting mechs moves
wildly, so it seems hard to aim, but fighters launch missiles, and even
shoot down enemy with automatic vulkan(sometimes), how to resolve that?
And, dogfighting "rounds" are 10 sec. rather than normal 1 second per
turn. If they can do aiming under dogfight, how many seconds they can aim? - quote quote (Dr. Kromm to Mihity) - Dogfighting combat is a simplified *cinematic* system that is radically
different from regular GURPS combat. There's no aiming or snap shots
the direct-fire phase lets you shoot at no penalty for *not* aiming and
no bonus for aiming, using all the usual modifiers (range/speed, size,
neural interface, active targeting, targeting computer, etc.). The idea
is that you used *some* of your 10 seconds of maneuvering to get a bead
on your foe, but you weren't able to just sit there aiming.
