Back in America in the early 1800s, a sport called dogfighting was very popular. Two dogs would fight while people watched and bet on which animal would survive. This cruel sport was legal in New York State until 1866, when Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA and got a law passed that made dogfightingand all cruelty to animalsillegal. Today, dogfighting is against the law in all 50 statesbut unfortunately, it still secretly happens in many places around the country. Dogs are not the only animals that humans force to fight each other. Cockfighting, for example, has been around for centuries. People breed a special kind of rooster and make two or more of them fight; the battles last until at least one of the birds is dead. It is believed that people first began breeding roosters for fighting in Southeast Asia more than 3,000 years ago. Cockfighting later spread to Greece and Rome and then on to Britain, before finally crossing the Atlantic about 200 years ago to find popularity in North, South and Central America. In the colonial days, cockfighting commonly took place in cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston. Why would people make animals fight? Is there anything you can do to stop dogfighting and cockfighting? Read on to find out more.

1. What is dogfighting? 2. How does it cause animal suffering? The injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terriers used in the majority of these fights have been specifically bred and trained for fighting and are unrelenting in their attempts to overcome their opponents. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are able to inflict severe bruising, deep puncture wounds, and broken bones. Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight. Other animals are often sacrificed as well. Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits, or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements. 3. Are there other concerns? 4. What other effects does the presence of dogfighting have on people and animals in a community? Dogs used for fighting have been bred for many generations to be dangerously aggressive toward other animals. The presence of these dogs in a community increases the risk of attacks not only on other animals but also on people. Children are especially at risk, because their small size may cause a fighting dog to perceive a child as another animal.

Please note that the purpose of this letter is to enhance public awareness of the evils of dogfighting in general, not to make accusations against individuals or organizations or to comment on particular events. (If you have information to support specific accusations, you should contact local law enforcement agencies rather than the media.) Keep your letter general in nature, using the following text as an example.] It is inexcusable that some people view the animal suffering involved in staged dogfights as a form of entertainment or a way to make a profit. And it is difficult to believe that this illegal and shameful activity is on the upswing. For those who are unacquainted with dogfighting, it involves placing two dogs in a pit (usually an area enclosed by plywood walls) where they must fight before a crowd of cheering spectators until one dog becomes too injured or exhausted to continue. Dogs used in these brutal contests have been bred for maximum aggressiveness. The fights may last from several minutes to more than two hours, and the dogs usually suffer painful injuries, including multiple puncture wounds, deep lacerations, and broken bones. Dogs often die from dehydration, blood loss, infection, exhaustion, or shock as a result of a fight, and owners kill many of the losing dogs by gunshot or other methods.

Fellow Trekkies, get ready! Activision brings next-gen home with the new Star Trek Invasion. You and your fellow Red Squad members have been assigned to the U.S.S. Typhon There are five types of standard weapons available on the Valkyrie, both directed energy and guided munitions, with some of the modular weapons array being capable of enhancement as you play. Your ship comes equipped with tractor and pressor beams, target/motion lock, a 3D radar screen, and an energy management system (which shifts energy to shields or weapons when needed). You can also pick up cloaking devices and utilize the warp plasma of destroyed ships for an added boost. When you are playing dual missions, you can pick alternative ships which have different specs for speed, shielding, weapons, and maneuverability. There were high and low points in this game as far as graphics were concerned. Many of the cinema screens were incredibly pixilated and the movement of ships through space sometimes reminded me of caterpillars. The actual game screens were very nicely done, with the movement appearing smooth, and the starscapes were fabulous. I must say that parts of this game had some of the most amazing use of color I have ever seen. The enemy ships were detailed (I could tell the difference between the Romulan and Cardassian ships) and looked good moving in every speed from sub-light to warp.

I posted it 'cause many people said I should. I only use a CA, so if you play another ship take any advice with a grain of salt (actually, take it all with a grain of salt.). There are, as I see it, 3 major things about successfully dogfighting. The most important, by far, is intensive use of tractors. The second is to change speed constantly. The third is to det incoming torps. Remapping the keyboard in the .xtrekrc file is important. The y key for pressor (?), etc. is impossible to properly utilize. For those interested, here's mine: dTeyadllrrqe D I think some of that was redundant, but it works, so I don't care! :)

History of Dogfighting The HSUS on Animal Fighting Enter the Dogfighting Photo Gallery Dogfighting in Peoria The Peoria Humane Society and PAWS are unalterably opposed to blood sports such as dogfighting and cockfighting. These are brutal animal contests resulting in suffering, torture, harassment, and death for animals forced to participate. Such sports amount to torture for fun and are degrading and unfit for civilized society. Dogfighting in Peoria continues to be a concern for both the Peoria Humane Society and PAWS. Dogs are regularly found abandoned and terribly maimed from dogfighting. The Humane Society of the United States reports that the investigation of illegal animal fighting activities by local law enforcement, animal control, and humane agencies is frequently difficult, frustrating, and unsuccessful. The lack of success is most often due to circumstances beyond the control of the investigating agency. The Peoria Humane Society in conjunction with the Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS), is currently exploring possible methods to expose and prosecute dogfighting citizens in the Peoria community. Public awareness campaigns, rewards for information, and other ideas are receiving serious consideration. If you have a suggestion or idea that may help in the fight against this blood sport, please contact the Peoria Humane Society at 682-9015. DOG FIGHTING:
    AN HISTORICAL NOTE
The modern ‘sport’ of dog fighting has its origins in the Coliseum combats of ancient Rome. Emperor Lucullus was reputedly the first to initiate the practice of pitting dogs against other animals: a group of dogs would be thrown into the Coliseum, doomed to be trampled to death by wild elephants.
Following the fall of Rome, the practice of fighting dogs made its reappearance in medieval England. Beginning in at least the 12th Century, such practices as bull and bear baiting, in addition to mortal combats between dogs and lions or elephants, became increasingly popular. In Elizabethan London, on the south banks of the Thames, a popular attraction was the Bear Gardens – an attraction that even Queen Elizabeth graced. Indeed, royal approval of bear baiting included the appointment of an official ‘Master of the Bears and Dogs.’
By the middle of the 17th Century, the popularity in England of baiting sports with at least the nobility had declined rather dramatically; by 1835, humane groups succeeded in outlawing all baiting sports in an act of Parliament known as the Humane Act of 1835.

Dogfighting bust Police officers rescue dogs, one of which has died, and confiscate training equipment such as treadmills, weight scales, syringes, steroids and antibiotics Thursday, July 01, 1999 By Johnna A. Pro, Post-Gazette Staff Writer It was just after midnight Friday when Pittsburgh police Officers Nick Uva Jr. and Eric Churilla, on routine patrol in the city's Fairywood neighborhood, spotted a cage covered in blood inside an open garage. A pitt bull rescued by Pittsburgh police finds a friend in Kathy Hecker from Animal Friends. The dog, with drainage tubes now on his reattached ears, was injured in a dogfight over the weekend. (Annie O'Neill, Post-Gazette) Within the hour, five men were under arrest, two badly injured animals were rescued and officers from the city's West End station had begun collecting evidence in a case that authorities hope will help them crack the shadowy world of dogfighting in the county. The case the first dogfighting arrest for either officer is the largest in the area, said Kathy Hecker, an Animal Friends humane agent. "The officers, they really did it right. They saw enough blood and heard enough crying that they knew to follow up," she said.

The biggest problem with newer pilots is that they really don't know who they should attack or what the consequences might be. You don't start out with any defined enemies like in a mission-based game. Relationships on Titan are about as complex as the economy. To start out with, I suggest that you go to a police station and target some pilots on their "Wanted List". These are usually pirates of varying skill. They also carry a reward that you'll get for killing them.

Charlie's Beginner's Guide to Dogfighting Abstract This chapter will discuss dogfighting, one of the major aspects of the game. The chapter will be split into paragraphs adressing the issues of how to do damage and how to avoid it, a paragraph which tells you what not to do and finally some stuff which is related to dogfighting on a higher level. In this manual, the standard shiptype of a CA is assumed. The intricansies of other shiptypes and dogfighting will be discussed in a seperate section. Chapter 1: Dealing damage 1.1 Introduction In netrek there is basically only five ways to deal damage. Phasering, torping, using plasma, detting enemy torps and exploding. Phasering and torping are good options which will be adressed individually. Using plasma is a definite don't , and will be discussed in section (3.1). Detting enemy torps is relatively complicated but an essential mechanic of the game and will be discussed in greater detail in section (1.2.4). Finally, exploding does a great deal of damage but since it uhm... kills you in the process, it is the least desirable option.
Figure 1 on the right shows the five basic ways of dealing damage. Feel free to point over the different pictures to start the animations.
