Frequently Asked Questions: What is the difference between an x-back racing harness , and an H-back harness ? Can I use an x-back harness or a H-back harness for ski-joring as well as dogsledding, or roller blading?
Yes you can use either an x-back racing/recreational harness, or a H-back harness for all three sports as well as for bike-joring. The difference between an x-back harness and a H-back harness is the fit. H-back harness is better suited to long lean dogs.
What is the difference between a semi-slip collar and a buckle choke collar ? Does my dog need a correction collar? What is a flyball collar
A semi-slip or reduced choke collar, has a stop, this allows you to correct the dog without the collar continuously tightening. A semi slip collar is useful in teaching dogs not to back out of their collars. A buckle choke collar, can be either a full choke, or no choke, for training and everyday walking. Flyball collars have a handle built into them this collar is very useful for keeping your dog close when someone comes to the door.

From 15-minute jaunts to eight-day journeys, snow country beckons By JANE AMMESON
Special to The Courier-Journal
Photos By Randall McCune, Special to the Courier-Journal Last year's Bay Harbor MUSH event presented some picturesque dog-likes-child moments. About Top Jobs You can be a musher, but you can't say "mush." "That's only in the movies," says Fred Powers, owner of Wilderness Trail Outfitters in Wetmore, Mich., his voice letting me know he's had to explain this at least a million times. And these huskies do rock and roll. According to Powers, his dogs can hit speeds of up to 24 miles an hour within the first 40 yards or so on the trail. After running four to six miles, the dogs slow down to about five to eight miles per hour. But despite this high energy, huskies still have that most wonderful of dog traits: a need to please. Dog-sledding-type huskies don't want to sit around the kennel or hang out at their water dish. They want to pull the sled. It's fun, they're ready, and all seem to be pleading, "Pick me, pick me." "They all want to pull a sled," says Powers, who started his business about 12 years ago and says it's been growing 30 percent each year. Last year his dogs logged 5,000 to 6,000 miles during the four-month sledding season.

Gift Certificates Available! Algonquin Park is world famous for its canoe routes - there are over 1600km of them! On one of our Algonquin wilderness Canoe trips you will experience the wild Algonquin Park. We avoid the busy "tourist" areas in Algonquin that others go to - the places in Algonquin Park that we camp in are secluded and well off the beaten track. It is also the best place in the world to see moose, hear a wolf howling in the distance, or see a beaver. Perfect for wildlife viewing, or just relaxing. And in winter we can reveal Algonquin Park to you by another exciting method - on a Dog Sledding Expedition! We provide high quality "Total Immersion" Soft Adventure trips geared towards people who like to experience life instead of watch it pass them by! In the summer we offer various exciting trips including wilderness camping, guided Algonquin Park canoe trips, and hiking. In the winter we have dog sledding expeditions, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, all in the beautiful, snowy setting of Algonquin. We also offer exciting Round Algonquin Park (RAP) snowmobile safaris! Of course we don't neglect the rest of Ontario. We also have canoe trips that explore Killarney Park and Temagami, and short snowmobile safaris in the Haliburton Highlands.

SNOW FUN
Imagine climbing aboard a sled and being propelled on a crisp winter day behind a team of running dogs. Patients at the Spokane Shriners Hospital and their families are looking forward to trying out dog-sledding during the 2nd annual "I-KID-arod." There's nothing like a dog-sled ride in the Great Northwest, especially when the riders are patients of the Spokane Shriners Hospital. Angel, at right, who participated in the Spokane Hospital's first I-KID-arod, didn't seem to have any luck getting this Samoyed interested in the big pull. The upcoming event is slated for February 1998 and will be held on a 360-acre tree farm in northeastern Washington, owned by Spokane Hospital's retired Chief of Staff Ed Lester, M.D. Local Shrine Clubs, businesses and organizations, as well as volunteers from the community and hospital, are busy preparing for this day in the snow. The 1997 I-KID-arod, held last January, was a huge success. Over 43 new mushing enthusiasts discovered the fun of dog-sledding. The event received television coverage nationwide, as CNN picked up the news story. Shrine clubs from all over the country contacted the hospital for additional information, and some have borrowed materials to conduct similar events during the winter months. The dog sled outing for the children and their families is just one example of how Shriners Hospitals take care of their patients' emotional needs. The hospitals' treatment focuses on a family-centered care environment, which stresses that while medicine might heal the child's body, tending to the child's sense of well-being is equally important in the healing process.

Sledding Into the Wilderness
Making of a Sled Dog Balto Dogsledding 101 Resources MAKING OF A SLED DOG
The Alaskan husky is not a formal breed. Ironically, the powerful, dedicated canines profiled in NATURE's SLED DOGS: AN ALASKAN EPIC are little more than mutts. "The dog we call the Alaskan husky isn't a formal breed," explains onetime musher Joe Runyan, who won Alaska's Iditarod sled dog race in 1989. Rather, huskies are mixed-breed dogs that are selected "for performance, not looks," he says.
In particular, husky breeders are looking for dogs with an instinctive desire to pull long and hard through the toughest conditions. "You've got to have dogs that really want to see what is around that next corner," Runyan says. "They want to be always on the go."
Still, careful breeding over decades has produced dogs with telltale physiques. For one thing, the best sled-pulling dogs have quick, efficient gaits and remarkable strength for their size. "You rarely see a really good sled dog over about 55 pounds," says Runyan, speculating that larger dogs are at a physiological disadvantage when it comes to delivering oxygen and blood to the heart, lungs, and muscles. But even small dogs can pull impressive loads. "My daughter had a 43-pound dog that pulled over 800 pounds," Runyan recalls. With such power, a 16-dog sled team "is like a small pony with 64 legs," he notes. Bigger teams, including one that included more than 200 dogs, have been known to pull buses and even help move houses. "Their strength can be unbelievable," Runyan says.
