GREYHOUND RACING IN FINLAND
Background
The first greyhound races in Finland were organized in the 1950's, when a few greyhound enthusiasts imported some six dogs from England. However, the dogs being so very few in numbers, the sport was more or less forgotten, except for the occasional greyhound lover among the Finnish Kennel Association. The Finnish Greyhound Racing Association was founded 1984 to develop and encourage greyhound and whippet racing in the country.
The Finnish Greyhound Racing Association
The federal association of greyhound racing consists of seven member clubs with 700 individual members in different parts of the country. The association authorizes the member clubs to organize the official greyhound races in Finland. The track officials are trained and the national racing record and the Finnish stud book are maintained by the association. There is also the Greyhound Racing magazine with 4 issues in the year. Apart from this, the association helps the Finnish greyhound kennels with selling their puppies, and tries to attract new friends to the sport in all possible ways. The Finnish racing season lasts from early May until early October, and there are some 25 racing days in a season. The biggest events are the Sprinters' Derby, the OAKS for bitches and the Masters for dogs, the Junior Derby for the two-year-old youngsters, the Golden Coat Cup, and the Finnish Championships, of course.

Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
A Local Legacy

Have you ever been in a race? How long was it? How would you like to be in a race that is more than 1,000 miles long, involves treacherous climbs, and lasts for nine to 20 days in sub-zero temperatures, much of it in darkness and blinding winds? Sounds incredible? Well, that is what some people do every year in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska. Called "the last great race on Earth," the Iditarod (pronounced eye-DIT-a-rod) consists of teams of 12 to 16 dogs pulling a sled driven by a man or woman, called a "musher." The race, which begins on the first Saturday every March, runs from Anchorage in the south to Nome on the western Bering Sea. The journey takes the mushers over mountains, through dense forests, and across frozen rivers and tundra. Each year 50 to 80 mushers leave the starting gate, and for many of them their main goal is just to complete the race. The Iditarod is the ultimate test of humans and animals against nature.

Imagine...
Golden Retrievers found shot to death in an empty field
...a Jack Russell terrier electrocuted in a party atmosphere
Cocker Spaniels left starving in an abandoned kennel
...thousands of Black Labradors packed in trucks and sent to their deaths in just one year
Sadly, with racing Greyhounds there is no imagination required.
Horrific incidents such as these and many others have happened to greyhounds bred for dog racing in the United States. Once the favorite pet of pharaohs and kings, in modern-day America the greyhound is merely the means to an end for an intrinsically cruel and unnecessary form of gambling.
In dog racing, there is only one ultimate goal: profit. And when the graceful greyhounds don't meet that need, most are expendable. Some are placed as pets, but many must be killed - to the tune of up to an estimated each year. The "fortunate" ones are killed humanely. Others become documented horror stories. But thousands disappear to fates unknown.

Effective June 1, 2004 we regretfully will be closing our adoption group, Pioneer City Friends of Greyhounds. Due to recent major medical problems in our family, we must change our focus and make these problems a top priority.
I want to thank all of you who fostered, transported, checked applications, made home visits, bathed dogs, did fund raising and helped in so many other ways to make Pioneer City Friends of Greyhounds the success it has been. All of these precious greyhounds could not have found Forever Homes without you. We will be forever grateful. We will be available until all our dogs are adopted.

(Est. 1994) is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for retired racing Greyhounds and is proudly sponsored by the Colorado Kennel Operators. Without their involvement, RMGA would be unable to function. We are very proud of their commitment to our goal and to our organization. Our volunteers are located primarily in the area north of Denver, stretching as far as Fort Collins. And our kennel is just east of Brighton, Colorado.
We are celebrating our 10th year in operation in 2004! It's amazing that what started out as a couple of friends helping Torri adopt out her retired Greyhounds has turned into a wonderful group of friends and volunteers who help all of the kennel operators in Colorado! Our official "birthday" is in November, but we wanted everyone to know about this milestone in RMGA's life.
