2. Types of Sled Dogs
Naturally, most northern breeds were used as sled dogs. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Eskimo Dogs, Greenlands, Samoyeds, Norrbottenspets, and Hokkaidokens are all sled dogs. However, lots of different breeds of dogs have been and are used to drive sleds and carts. People use Irish Setters, Dalmations, Golden Retrievers, etc., to enjoy mushing sports. In fact, most modern day speed and endurance mushers use mixed breeds (often Siberian crossed with Greyhound). So, if you do not have a "sled dog," but still want to enjoy the sport, fear not, for most any type of dog can be used. Mushing is fun, both to take part in and simply to watch.

Remember me :
I am not a Member - Join here! VSDRA was first formed in 1994 , as it was foreseen that for our sport to ever be recognized we needed to have a separate body away from the pure breed clubs. The great force behind the original development of VSDRA was Nola Randell. After finding out what requirements where necessary for our future development we needed a non-discriminatory body (pure breeds being discriminatory as only for pure breeds) to help develop policies and enable future possible funding and recognition by government bodies for the sport of Sled Dog Racing.
Victorian Sled Dog Racing Association as its intention at the time was that it wanted to concentrate on our own State (Victoria), and when enough interstate clubs were formed they could possibly form their own state body, and then move forward and form an Australian Association.
VSDRA is made up of Sled Dog Racing clubs, which form the counsel along with a general committee for day to day running of the association. VSDRA is also made up of general members, who are represented by 2 driver delegates, but members can contact the general committee if they have any questions or problems.

General Beginner Questions
I am a beginner with 1-2 dogs. I want to mush, but I don't think my dog(s) can pull a sled. How can I enjoy the sled dog sports with what I have? Answer: Try skijouring or kicksleds. Skijouring is where a dog pulls you while you are on skis. A kicksled is a light, upright sled that can take 1-2 dogs. Both are rather inexpensive options for the novice. A full skijouring setup (sans skis) is under $75 and the kicksled runs under $200. Several outfitters listed under the suppliers FAQ carry this equipment. Secondly, don't discount a regular sled unless the cost is prohibitive. A dog weighing 40-50 lbs can pull a human on a stanchion (basket) sled on a level without difficulty. I am a beginner and in great need of information. How do I start? Answer: . I have a Poodle-Sharpei cross ;-) Can I mush? Answer: If your dog is over 35 lbs and has enough leg, sure, why not? Mushers have raced Dalmatians, German Shorthaired Pointers, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Keeshonden, Aussie Shepherds, Border Collies, and GSDs. How many dogs make a team?

The Topic:
Sled Dog Racing
Easier - People from the polar regions have used dogs and sleds for a long time. Working dogs were used in everyday life to protect and in hunting. But most of all, dogs and sleds were used to carry food, products, and other things. The first sled dog races may have been among native people as they dashed their dog teams across the frozen ice fields. Sled dog racing was continued by immigrant trappers, miners, freight haulers, and settlers. Harder - Indigenous people of the far North regions were dependent on sled dogs for protection, companionship, hunting, trapping, and transportation for thousands of years. In the more recent European immigrations to North America, newcomers quickly saw the value of working sled dogs. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police started running dog-team patrols in the northern frontiers as early as 1873. Mail teams later delivered the news to outlying communities. Inland settlements were dependent on sled dog freight haulers. Explorers such as Byrd, Peary, and Amundsen relied on sled dogs in their exploration of frozen wastelands. Today, few of the inhabitants of the Far North are dependent on dogs for basic survival. However, sled dog racing continues in the United States, Canada, Northern Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, and other locations around the world.

(for all breeds) Here's a picture of my lead dog, "Koda," a red merle Border Collie, getting psyched up before a race. A Personal Look at Amateur Sled Dog Racing by Lonnie Olson Here is my team of Border Collies bursting out of the starting chute. Amateur Sled Dog Races The sprint races consist of a very short run. It is usually about three or more miles for the 3dog class, five or more miles for the 5-dog class, and seven or more miles for the 7-dog class. The race planners try to get the mileage to be the same as the number of dogs in the class, but there will be an occasional longer trail. The mileage is not usually more than twice the same number of dogs that you have. Depending on the hosting organization in your area, the numbers of dogs in each class could be different. There might be four, six, and eight dog classes. They may also offer 1 0-dog and unlimited classes. There are rules which govern all of these races. There is a minimum number of dogs which can be raced in each class. For instance, you could run in the 7-dog class with as few as five dogs. You must have a basket in your sled with a dog bag large enough to hold your biggest dog. You may or may not be allowed to carry a passenger in your sled (remember, many amateurs are not out to win the racethey are only out to have fun). You must have a snow hook and a brake. You are not allowed to use a whip, or have any line attaching the sled to any part of yourself., In addition, there are quite a few rules of "trail etiquette" with which you will need to become familiar before you enter a race.
