Recreational dinghy sailing has always been a popular activity at Fellowship Afloat. Our fleet consists of Wayfarers, Picos, Laser 1s and 2s, Stratos's, a Dart 16and a gaff-rigged cutter. Our sailing season is generally between mid March to late October and youth groups, schools, special needs and development training groups enjoy the adventure and challenge. Dinghy sailing
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Dinghy sailing Sailing is motion across a body of water in a sailing ship, or smaller boat, powered by wind.
How sailing works
The force of the wind is used to create motion by using one or more sails. The movement of the air over the sails acts in the same way that air moves over an aircraft's wing. The pressure difference created on either side of the sails drives the boat forward. In sailing, usually, two or more sails are used in conjunction with another to maximise the smooth flow of air. The sails are adjusted to create a smooth laminar flow over the sail surface. This is called the "slot effect".
Click the link for more information. is the activity of sailing small boats by using the sails and underwater foils (centreboard and tiller). It also involves adjusting the trim and balance by changing position of the crew and helm within the boat. Together with 'course made good' (effective choice of route and maneuvers), these are the five essentials of dinghy sailing.
Development of the Dinghy
Early Beginnings
There has always been a need for small tender boats as transport to and from moored sailing ships. Together with other smaller work craft such as fishing and light cargo, small inshore craft have always been in evidence. Charles II of England had a private sailing boat presented to him when he returned from exile to England in the 17th century, and he sailed for recreation and competition.
