Daito Ryu
Daito Ryu aikijutsu or aikibudo is a Japanese martial art that first rose to attention under the headmastership of Sokaku Takeda. Although he claimed it was a koryu (ancient) art, there appears to be no documentation that predates him. He claimed all documentation was lost in a fire. It is generally agreed that it is closer in spirit to koryu than to modern or gendai arts. Daito Ryu is becoming more popular, but has largely been eclipsed by its offshoot Aikido . Amongst its other descendants are Hakko Ryu. Daito Ryu of today is split up in some different organisations, such as Seigo Okamoto's Roppokai.

Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu, Tokyo, Japan
Little is known about Daito Ryu Aiki Ju jutsu in the West. Even in Japan, it has long been considered a relic of a pre war era, at best the poor cousin of its modern day cognate Aikido, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Daito Ryu has always been a conservative and some what secretive martial art. Its most famous exponent Takeda Sokaku only ever taught people of high social standing such as politicians, teachers, police or military people. Before that the art belonged exclusively to the Aizu clan in Japan and was never allowed to be shown to outsiders. Takeda was probably one of the last true warriors. At the turn of the last century, he spent his time roaming Japan, taking on challengers and perfecting his sword and Ju Jutsu techniques against any one foolish enough to take him on. Although only 5ft tall he was feared and respected as a great Martial artist and continued to travel around Japan teaching and spreading Daito Ryu well into his 80s.
Although very small and hard to find, Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu has remained remarkably intact, since Takeda Sokaku Sensei started disemminating the art through out Japan at the turn of the century. Periodically put on hold during the Second World War, the art in its original form is still very much alive in a small industrial suburb in the outskirts of Tokyo.

Daito-ryu Aiki-jutsu
Daito-ryu was developed in large part as a means of self-defense, as a way to effectively and efficiently neutralize violence, not cause it. There are no competitive matches in Daito-ryu. One distinctive feature of Daito-ryu is that it has incorporated many of the essential elements and principles of other schools of budo, most notably the Ono-ha Itto-ryu.
Daito-ryu goes beyond being a simple means of self-defense, and aims at putting mind and body in balance with the spirit that pervades the universe, developing oneself as a person, and contributing to society.
The Daito-Ryu is thought to have been founded in the 12th century by Minamoto (Genji) Yoshimitsu, a descendant of the Emperor Seiwa. Long kept a secret under the Minamoto clan, the art was used by the Emperor's army and private guard. Controlled by Japanese nobility, appointed official martial art of the Shogun's residence by Hoshina Masayuki in the late 1600's, Daito techniques were transmitted from generation to generation. Through the centuries numerous masters of this discipline were important war lords such as Shingen Takeda, undoubtedly the most famous in Japanese culture. The most noble figures in Daito-Ryu history was Minamoto, Takeda (1758-1853) and Tanomo (1860-1943). Due to the discipline and perseverance of the Ichikawa and Hanmura families the ancient tradition of Daito Ryu was transmitted unaltered.

Hisa Takuma was born in 1895 and died 1980. His home-town is in Kochi-prefecture in Shikoku-island. Japan is consisted of many islands, main islands are, from north, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Hisa graduated Kobe university (school-name was different at that time). When Hisa was a school-boy he was a captain of Sumo-club. Sumo is one of Japanese martial arts, two persons wrestle in a circle about 6 meters diameter, when pushed out of this circle or touch the ground any part of his body except bottom of his feet, he is defeated. Hisa won All Kansai student Sumo championship. Kansai is western part of Honshu. Teacher changed to Takeda Sokaku, Hisa and other Asahi-men practised Daito-ryu harder than before . In March of 1939, Hisa was given Menkyokaiden (you are equal to me, I have nothing to teach you anymore), and 6 Asahi-men were given Hiden 8 dan. In his life Takeda Sokaku gave Menkyokaiden only to Hisa, he did not give it even to his son. After given Menkyokaiden Hisa taught Daito-ryu to Asahi-men and policemen of Osaka. Hisa retired from Asahi in 1944. In 1945 Japan was defeated in the World War 2, and all Japanese martial arts were banned to practice. After 3 years Japanese were permitted to practice martial arts again. Hisa opened his own dojo in Osaka, also in Asahi company Daito-ryu club revived, Hisa taught both in his dojo and Asahi club. In Hisa's dojo excellent pupils are Mori ( Hiden 8 dan), Kobayashi ( Hiden 8 dan), Kawabe (Hiden 7 dan). In Asahi club Utsunomiya ( Hiden 8 dan) and I (Hiden 8 dan). But I think Daito-ryu is a little different in Hisa's dojo and Asahi club.

Daito Ryu
“Here is a brief summary of Master Sokaku Takeda and Daito Ryu. Daito Ryu Jujutsu is a family martial tradition of the Takeda clan. The founder was Shinra Saburo no Yoshimitsu from the Seiwa Genji line (a major branch of the Minamoto clan). The name of the system is said to have been taken from the "Daito Mansion" in Shiga where training used to take place. The tradition was handed down in the Kai Takeda family and when Lord Takeda Tosa Kunitsugu was apointed to be Lord of " Aizu Han ", it was he who brought it to Aizu. There it had been handed down as the secret techniques of that domain until the end of the feudal period in the 1860's. Sokaku had been outstanding in martial arts as a youth and was called a genius with the sword. One story relates that as a young man Takeda killed many challengers, and he would boast of this to Ueshiba. It seems though that after a while he changed and layed aside the sword and became absorbed in the Daito Ryu Jujutsu tradition. In 1898 he received a master's license in the secret techniques of the domain. This is how Takeda Sokaku became a transmitter (in Japanese literally a "middle founder") of the Daito tradition. After that he traveled to various places teaching and spreading Daito Ryu and eventually made his way to Hokkaido.” From “FOUNDER OF AIKIDO (12): THE FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH MASTER SOKAKU TAKEDA”

Daito Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu
Intro:
A prominent sub-style of Jujutsu.
Origin:
Japan
History:
Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu is an old Jujutsu style presumably founded my Minamoto, Yoshimitsu in the eleventh century. Originally, it was only practised by the highest ranking Samurais in the Takeda family in the Kai fiefdom in northern Japan. Feudal overlord Takeda, Shingen died in 1573, and his kinsman Takeda, Kunitsugu moved to the Aizu fiefdom, where he became Jito - overseer of the fief. Kunitsugu introduced Daitoryu Aikijujutsu at the Aizu fiefdom, where the secret fighting art only was taught to the feudal lords and the highest ranking samurais and ladies in waiting. The feudal system was broken down after 1868 when the Meiji restoration begun. Saigo, Tanomo (1829-1905), the heir to Daito-ryu gave the system to Takeda, Sogaku (1859-1943) and instructed him to pass it on to future generations. Takeda, Sogaku first used the term "Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu" in the beginning of the twentieth century and taught the art of it to many students. Takeda, Sogaku taught Daito-ryu from the beginning of the twentieth century until his death in 1943 two of his best known students were Ueshiba, Morihei, founder of Aikido and Choi, Yong Sul, founder of Hapkido.
