Winter cycling
Hi, My name's Pete Hickey, and I cycle-comute in the winter. The following is a collection of several photos related to winter cycling. Here is an example of my frozen face from riding in the cold. When its insanely cold, your breath will freeze all over your face. In the above photo, my balaclava is so covered with ice that it actually froze onto my beard (see next photo). This photo is after an hour of riding at around -30 degrees. It really looks much worse than it is. I couldn't just pull off the balaclava because it was frozen solidly onto my beard When this happens, the simplest thing to do is to get down on my knees and press my beard onto the radiator in my office. Co-workers think its a strange religious ritual. My bicycle suffers from the winter as well. Note the buildup of snow and ice on the frame, wheels, crank, etc.. Not only is it not good for the bicycle, but it makes riding much more difficult. Things don't turn as well. If you want to see some more pictures of the bike, click here.

Working paperBus and bicycle interaction within the road network - BISA response
Recently BISA was asked to comment on a working paper on bike and bus interactions within the road network. The paper was prepared by ARRB transport research for RTA NSW, Austraoads, and the Australian Bicycle Council. We've developed a response after talking to several members, plus taking a straw poll of cyclists in Rundle Street last Sunday, about their experiences with buses on the road (most of they said most bus drivers were OK).

SUMMARY 3500 Secondary School children in 23 Leeds High Schools completed a questionnaire in school time. The results give us a unique insight into current cycle use by 11-14 year olds. Although 46% of the children would like to cycle to school only 2% currently do - there is a huge suppressed demand for cycling. The numbers that would like to cycle to school are the same as a Sustrans survey in Temple Moor school (Leeds), and are greater than in a similar survey in York In Leeds pupils generally have a short journey to school (87% under 3 miles) and 53% walk to school. There is some variation from school to school but 30% travel by bus. 15% of pupils come by car and many of these journeys are short.

180. Weight Cycling
What Is Weight cycling? Weight Top. Will weight cycling leave me with more fat and less muscle than if I had not dieted at all? Weight
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutrit/pubs/wcycling.htm

What Is Weight Cycling?
Weight cycling is the repeated loss and regain of body weight. When weight cycling is the result of dieting, it is often called "yo-yo" dieting. A weight cycle can range from small weight losses and gains (5-10 lbs. per cycle) to large changes in weight (50 lbs. or more per cycle). Some research links weight cycling with certain health risks. To avoid potential risks, most experts recommend that obese adults adopt healthy eating and regular physical activity habits to achieve and maintain a healthier weight for life. Non-obese adults should try to maintain their weight through healthy eating and regular physical activity.
If I regain lost weight, won't losing it again be even harder?
A person who repeatedly loses and gains weight should not have more trouble trying to reach and maintain a healthy weight than a person attempting to lose weight for the first time. Most studies show that weight cycling does not affect one’s metabolic rate—the rate at which the body burns fuel (food) for energy. Based on these findings, weight cycling should not affect the success of future weight-loss efforts. Metabolism does, however, slow down as a person ages. In addition, older people are often less physically active than when they were younger. Regardless of your age, making regular physical activity as well as healthy eating habits a part of your life will aid weight loss and improve health overall.
