Welcome to Swan Velo's home on the internet
About Swan Velo
Swan Velo was a cycling club based around Windsor, Slough and Maidenhead in the Royal County of Berkshire, England. The club was mostly active in local time trials but some of our members also participated in Road Races, Mountain Bike rides and races, Track Racing, Audax and leisure rides.
Our website
Swan Velo has now closed but our website is still available. The links in the menu box on the left will take you to various parts of the site. You'll find our press releases, event promotions and results along with some feature stories. Notices The End of an Era The directors of Swan Velo Limited have regretfully concluded that the club should cease to exist as from the 31st of December 2003. Notwithstanding its short but proud ten-year history, which included the promotion of a trend-setting National Championship, a series of open events in aid of various charities and several awards for excellence from Maidenhead Sports Council, the downward trend in membership means that to continue with a reduced programme would be contrary to the club's ethic and simply delay an obvious decision. A shooting star perhaps, but Swan Velo will cease to exist knowing that in its ten year life it was able demonstrate to the time trialling world just how an event should be promoted. It would be true to say that no other club in London West District can claim to have contributed more in so short a time.

Full of Hot Air
Since I've started working full time during the day outside of the house, I have even less time to ride. So I've been trying to ride in the evenings. Generally, while the days are long, this timing works out well. Last night, however, was a different story... It was an Ozone Action Day. The first of many for my city this summer, if predictions hold true. Riding while the air quality is poor isn't a great idea, but what are we supposed to do when it's the only time we have to ride?

Ian's Cycling Pages
I created this page to display pictures and GPS track maps from bike rides. Basically this is for anything that might be interesting to put up on the web site so I can refer friends to it. If you just happenned to stumble in here while web surfing, you're welcome to have a look around. Pictures and more GPS tracks will be added as I do more rides. :-) Here are pages with cycling routes, GPS tracks and/or pictures:
Route from Evelyn LRT to SVBC
This is a route recommended by some SVBC members to get from the Evelyn light rail station to an SVBC meeting at the Round Table Pizza in downtown Sunnyvale.
Alum Rock Park
This is a ride near the neighborhood where I live. Alum Rock Park is a nice ride with good scenery. But it's a workout too.
Sunnyvale Baylands
There are a lot of trails on the levees by the Sunnyvale Baylands Park. These are accessible via light rail and a short ride on city streets.
Almaden Valley
The Los Alamitos Creek Trail runs the length of the Almaden Valley in South San Jose, and leaves town. Alternatives on the ride can go through Santa Teresa County Park back into town. This route is accessible from the Almaden light rail station.
Mountain View Shoreline Park
"Milpitas Loop" Route
This is a less-organized route than the others so far. It makes a loop in Milpitas starting in North San Jose and going along the levees of Coyote Creek, Lower Penitencia Creek and Berryessa Creek to the Milpitas City Center, and back.

We have received more news on new bridges. The official opening ceremony of the Coldham's Lane bridge , will be at noon on Tues 8th June. The Fort St George bridge is being made more accessible to both pedestrians and cyclists, and we will post further news on that when works are finished here (a cattle grid is being installed). We are also delighted to hear that the Cutter Ferry bridge is to be replaced by a new wider pedestrian and cycle bridge.

Updated 6 December 2003
Keep on cycling...
If you are the kind of cycle tourist who likes to make sideways excursions rather than just cycling straight ahead, there is no greater joy than cycle touring in Wales and the Welsh Borders of England. You can easily avoid cycling on major highways as this little known region, on the western edge of Britain, is criss-crossed by a maze of rarely-used lanes (paved) that make it a touring cyclist's paradise.
It's not just the famous national parks such as Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire Coast, and Brecon Beacons, which justify a bike tour, but the bits in between like the Wye Valley, the Gower and Lleyn Peninsulas, the South Shropshire Hills, and much more.
Stick a pin in a map of Wales and the Welsh Borders and it can't help but land near a river valley, mountains, coast, moorland, or all four. Look more closely at the map and you can see how the Welsh border was constantly changing as the Norman French pushed into Wales, and were beaten back by angry Welsh. A dead giveaway are the Welsh place names appearing in England, and English names appearing in the middle of Wales.

History tells us that bicycling has been popular in West Georgia for over a century. This photo of R. Lee Sharpe, taken in 1896, shows a camera mounted on his 'ordinary' bicycle. Mr. Sharp was editor of a local paper, and led organized bike rides. What would he think of his photo becoming a hypertext link on the internet?
