Surrounded by a herd of bison, with a few elk mingling in as they paw the frozen ground in search of forage. Or bumping along in a strange moon vehicle through a world enveloped in white. Winter in Yellowstone brings you all these scenes. If you head for Yellowstone for cross-country skiing, your choices are the Mammoth area ( Mammoth trails ), accessible by bus from Bozeman, Montana, or the Old Faithful area ( Old Faithful trails ), a 4 hour sno-cat ride from either Mammoth or the southern gateway to the park above Jackson, Wyoming. I took the ride to Old Faithful from Mammoth. My bruised rear was amply rewarded with winter vistas shrouded in steam, trumpeter swans sailing in waters kept unfrozen by the geologic heat, and coyotes silhouetted in a world of white.

SEM has the unique distinction of being a trail adopter for over 20 years. The chapter maintains the heavily used White Mountain Lonesome Lake trail which brings hikers from the Lafayette Campgrounds to the Lonesome Lake Hut. Three times a year, chapter members perform basic as well as major maintenance on this trail. This past July a crew of 8 not only did basic maintenance but also rock work to restore part of the trail and reconstruction of a footbridge. Check out the photos . People of all abilities and experience can do trail work. The chapter provides training, food and the campsites for the weekend. Come join us to "get out, get dirty and give back". The first Lonesome Lake trail work event of 2004 will be May 21-23. The next Lonesome Lake weekend will be July 17,18. Contact Lou Sikorsky, 508-678-3984, 7-9 pm or

Grist Mill Photo Gallery ... Natural Features
Franklin Creek State Natural Area is located in Lee County, one mile northwest of the village of Franklin Grove and eight miles east of Dixon just north of Illinois Route 38. The beautiful Franklin Creek flows throughout the 664-acre park. Several large natural springs, hardwood forests, bedrock outcroppings, and a large variety of flora and fauna comprise a pristine ecosystem.
History
Pioneer families in the 1830s found the Franklin Creek area to be an inviting new home on the sometimes unfriendly prairie. Large, cool springs provided ample amounts of pure drinking water and early refrigeration, hardwood forests provided construction materials, and the creek provided fish for food and water power to run saw and grist mills. The deep, pleasant valleys protected by limestone and sandstone bluffs made ideal homesites shielded from cold winter winds. The mill spring, the largest in the park, provided water power for the largest grist mill in Lee County, constructed in 1847. Still today, many ponds and rock outcroppings along Franklin Creek carry names given to them by pioneer families.
