Before You Cross Country Ski Equipment
from Tips contributed by SkiPost.com When buying cross country skis, XC ski boots and poles, first determine the type of cross country skiing technique and terrain you typically use to ski. Beginner and intermediate skiers may choose stable, waxless, recreational equipment to learn and improve ski technique, but may lose speed. Advanced skiers may use specific skis for one ski technique, such as classical, skating, or backcountry.
Classical Cross Country Ski Technique
Classical skiing refers to the traditional style of X-C skiing. Arms and legs move parallel to the direction of travel and with the same synchronized rhythm as walking or running, but in XC skiing, your forward momentum carries you twice as far as normal walking strides. Classical technique depends on kicking and gliding - the kick is like a walking or running step; it is how you move forward.

The Skinny On Skinny Skis
It's quite easy to get to a cross-country skiing destination in Montana. First, step out of your door. Then, strap on your skis. The fact is, Montana has millions of acres of public lands open to cross-country skiing just about anywhere you go. (We also have world-class cross-country resorts, but more about them later.) Start your cross-country adventure in one of our two brightest jewels: Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. In Glacier, you'll likely have a sore neck from staring up at the dizzying peaks that surround you, and you can easily go an entire day without seeing another human being if you're looking for solitude. In Yellowstone, you can ski past bubbling geysers, explore acres of pristine beauty and spot plenty of wildlife. In addition, we have wilderness areas and national forests with miles of groomed and ungroomed trails. If you're looking for a destination experience, we have premier cross-country resorts, many with their own private trail systems or search here for a
Montana ski guide.

Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center is tucked away in the scenic, peaceful south-central region of New York's famed six-million acre Adirondack Forest Preserve. Founded more than a quarter of a century ago by former U.S. Olympic cross country skier Olavi Hirvonen, this unique Finnish-flavored resort is situated on hundreds of carefully managed acres. Its mountain setting, combined with the cozy, comfortable surroundings and warm hospitality of the Hirvonen family, create an idyllic setting for recreation and relaxation every season of the year. Abundant natural snowfalls combined with impeccable grooming performed with state-of-the-art snowcats ensures cross country skiers a superb winter experience. Expertly designed trails appeal to all skiers from novices to experts, using classical or skating techniques. Visitors also delight in snowshoeing, ice-skating, tubing, sledding and kicksledding along with a full calendar of special events from November into April. 70-acre spring fed Woods Lake boasts a sandy beach with superb swimming, canoeing, rowboating and fishing. The absence of motors and virtually undeveloped shorelines provide a tranquil setting inviting to loons, ducks, beaver, herons and the like. Forests of hardwood and pine, mountain streams and wildlife sightings offer guests a unique opportunity to interact with our natural environment. Biking and hiking are popular pursuits. Crisp autumn temperatures create spectacular foliage displays and presage winter's return.
