In 1992 and 1999 Mount Holyoke captured the Seven Sisters Championships, as well as the New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) Championship in 1992. Individually, Mount Holyoke runners have also excelled. In 1994, Samantha Williams won all-conference honors and was voted Rookie of the Year. Meredith Garey received all-conference honors in 1995. Katy Trandem received the conference Rookie of the Year award in 1999, and three Mount Holyoke runners were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Team that same year. More recently, Alison Paquette '03 was voted to the 2001 All-Conference Team. The competitive season begins the second Saturday in September with runners competing every weekend until just before Thanksgiving. The schedule includes invitational meets against Northeast Division III schools such as Williams, Bates, Bowdoin, and Smith. Training combines trail work, long-distance road work, and occasional track work, and is designed to develop a runner's strength, endurance, and speed. One of the team's goals each year is to send runners to post-season competition at the New England, ECAC, and/or NCAA Championships.

Organizers say AAU cross country meet is huge success
By Mike Corpos
American News Sports Writer

Despite sub-freezing temperatures and a light dusting of snow, the state AAU cross country meet went off without a hitch Saturday at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen. The meet, sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Union, a volunteer-based, non-profit sports organization, had 63 participants in five age groups: Bantam (1992 birth or later), 3,000 meters, Midget (1990-91 birth), 3,000 meters, Youth (1988-89 birth), 4,000 meters, Intermediate (1986-87 birth), 5,000 meters, and Young Women and Men (1984-85 birth), 5,000 meters. The top 12 runners in each age group received medals and qualified for the national meet which will be on Dec. 6 in Kettering, Ohio. With runners from all over the state participating, meet director Bill Martens said the whole thing was a success.
