Cross-country running
Cross-country running consists of running specified distances over varied terrain, including hills, grass, pavement and sometimes even water. In high school the distances vary, usually three(3) miles or five(5) kilometers. In college and professionals the courses vary from 8-10k for men and 4-6k for women. No official records, except course records exist for this sport, owing to the fact that no two courses are the same.

Wounds and Injuries

Resources from HONselect Cross-Country Running Hard on the Legs
Here's how to avoid injuries while trekking across rough terrain SUNDAY, March 23 (HealthScoutNews) Because cross-country runners have to trek through unpredictable terrain, often in wet and muddy weather, the sport can lead to a number of unexpected injuries. Unlike runners who stay on roads or tracks, cross-country racers encounter more hills and obstacles, increasing the stress on their ankles and feet. So, while 175,000 runners are treated by doctors for injuries every year, cross-country runners are especially at risk, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. To prevent injuries, runners should stretch before and after running. They should stay hydrated, pay close attention to the terrain, run only during the day, and stop running during the hottest times of the day. Another important factor is using the proper running shoes. To avoid injuries, runners should wear light, but well-padded, shoes, according to the academy. One of the most common, but often unnoticed, injuries for runners is shin splints, a persistent pain in the shins. At the beginning of training season, runners are prone to this injury if they train too hard to try to get in shape too quickly.

Cross-Country Running
by Hal Higdon They call it "shagging out," or "The Shag." It happens mostly in high school cross-country just before the start of races and (as near as I can determine) mostly in northwestern Indiana, where I live. The Shag is practiced at meets like the New Prairie Invitational, which each September attracts approximately 2,000 competitors from 90 different schools. New Prairie offers eight separate races, all of which begin with runners shagging out. As a result, The Shag exists as a ritual, a ceremonial opening statement, a taste of more to come. It's like at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway several hours south, where they say, "Gentlemen, start your engines," after singing, "Back Home in Indiana." When I was coaching cross-country for the local high school a decade ago, I used to love being part of The Shag. I still enjoy watching it. Here's how it works: A few minutes before the start of each race, the runners stand nervously on line in pre-assigned boxes, awaiting instructions. The starter, starting pistol in one hand, stands atop a ladder glaring down at them. Their coaches hover anywhere from 50-to-100 meters before the line. Several hundred meters further away, spectators wait cordoned behind ropes for The Shag to signal that the race is about to begin.
"Shag out!" the starter finally commands.

Latest News from Tipton Harriers
12 / 6 Stage Road Relays
It was a subdued start to the days racing at Sutton Park as many learn't of the tragic news that rising star, Sam Haughian had died in a car accident whilst on a training trip to South Africa. After a minutes silence in Sams memory the racing got underway.
At the end of 6 legs and against all the 'knowledgeable pundits' views Tipton were still in the top 3, proving that there is life in the old whippet yet. This was always going to be a challenge, but the 12 athletes rose to the challenge and gave it their all for the green and whites. From here he strength in depth began to show and gradually the team fell back to finish a still creditable 9th place. Several interesting developments in the mens team are on the horizon. Watch this space!!
Once again it was the Women's team who showed how it should be done with fine performances to capture silver medals behind surprise winners Coventry Godiva. Emma Phillips got the race underway and was ably followed by Hayley Jennings, Angela Allen, Kath Scales, Debbie Robinson and Loretta Sollars. Second place in a National championship is a superb performance by the black country outfit, and a great reward for the work put in by John and Julie Sheppard over last couple of seasons.

Oxford University Cross-Country Club Cross-country is one of only fourteen Full Blue sports in the University and certainly one that consistently maintains an extremely high standard of competition. Many of our athletes regularly compete at national, regional and county levels, with some of our best having run internationally. One does not have to look too far into the past to find some almost 'household' names of British running: Richard Nerurkar, Roger Bannister and Chris Chataway are all names that spring to mind. Both the men's and women's side of the club contain current members with international experience. On the other hand, OUCCC also thrives on having a large membership of much less serious runners. Whatever your standard, OUCCC will almost certainly cater for you . The Club fields five men's teams and three ladies' teams against Cambridge in the December Varsity matches and consistently competes to a high standard in the British Universities' Cross-Country Championship (both men's and women's teams are regular medal contenders), but, in almost all fixtures, anyone who wants to compete can do so. It also has a number of guaranteed entries for the London Marathon, and we have had many strong runners in this event recently. For many though, OUCCC is an excellent centre for people to maintain a high level of fitness. The Club has over 250 members which, supplemented by OUAC's 200 additional members, means that cross-country is an excellent way of meeting and socialising with people from outside your college or course. Plenty of social events are on the cards, no doubt at great detriment to our running!
