Travis Landreth - Cross Country, Track, and Running Analysis
Travis Eliot Landreth Remember these two ? Sanchez and Powell's epic duel
This page is now dedicated to the memory of Travis Landreth. Travis was a "nearly great" Massachusetts runner from Newburyport, once
nicknamed the "Beast from the East" winning the NCAA X-country East Regionals. He died
tragically from heart problems during a run with the Nike Farm team on January 12,2001 in
California . He was an All-American who ran for UConn (just happens to be my Alma Mater).
Travis is the "epitomy" of what a high school distance runner should
strive to be. He was very good in high school - 4:26 mile, 9:30 2 mile, 2:00 800 but
he had to work extremely hard for those times and was "totally" dedicated. But "extremely hard" was not
good enough for Travis, at the end of his sophomore year in college
he did "mega" mileage out in Oregon, and came back to be undefeated in eastern competition
in X-Country that fall. He was a "Prefontaine" front runner type who took it out from the gun! Unfortunately, running out fast with the top Kenyan collegiates in the NCAA finals burnt him

Cross-country teaches lifelong lessons that have little to do with running.
By Ignacio Lobos Christal Cuadra
and her dad, Greg Christal Cuadra could see the finish line ahead, just beyond a steep hill. It was the last 100 meters of her distinguished high school cross-country career and she thought she was about to quit. Cuadra, spent and barely breathing, stumbled to the top of the hill, her arch nemesis, Tia Ferguson, quickly catching up. The two-mile hilly Kaua'i course had taken its toll and Cuadra's furious early pace had been reduced to a survival walk. A year later, Cuadra can't quite remember how she finished and won the 2001 Hawai'i State Cross-country Championships. She blacked out for a few minutes after the race. "That was the toughest race I've ever run and the only race I almost didn't finish," the Maryknoll High School graduate says. Now 18, she is attending San Diego State on a full cross-country scholarship. Her painful experience is not uncommon in cross-country, long considered one of the toughest sports since it made its debut in the early 19th century in England. In Hawai'i, hundreds of runners mostly in middle schools, high schools and universities participate in the sport during the fall. Official practice begins in early August, and the season ends by early November. Some schools have modest programs, with barely enough runners to field a team. Punahou School has one of the largest cross-country programs in the Islands, with more than 200 runners.

History
As a competitive sport, cross-country running began in England with a game called "hare and hounds" or "the paper chase" in the early 19th century. In this game, a runner or group of runners laid a trail by dropping pieces of paper or other markers while following a random course, and a second set of runners then set out in pursuit, trying to follow the paper trail. The first formal competition was the Crick Run, first held at Rugby School in 1837. Many other public schools soon established similar events, followed by Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Although hare and hounds continued to be popular at schools, in important competition the game became a cross-country race along a course laid out in advance over open country. The English national cross-country championship was established in 1876. Two years later, William C. Vosburgh of New York introduced the sport to the United States. In 1887, the National Cross-Country Association was founded, and the association held its first championship event. The Amateur Athletic Association began conducting the national championship in 1880. Also in 1880, cross-country running was introduced at Harvard as an autumn training event for track and field distance runners, and other colleges quickly followed Harvard's example.

Headline News LOW HIGH MAN AT MT.WACHUSETT
May 23 New England's rollercoaster weather continued as conditions for Sunday's 12th annual Mt.Wachusett race were sunny 70's and humid, quite a contrast to Bedford the previous day. Paul Low (CMS/Amherst MA), handled the higher temperatures as well as the higher rises on his way to a higher place and a repeat win the 4.3 mile climb, the NE Mountain Circuit opener for 2004. His 25:17 was a few ticks slower than 2003 but 11 seconds ahead of five time winner and CMS partner Eric Morse who repeated his runner-up spot from last year. The leaders left no space for pretenders as the frontrunners established position just a half mile into the ascent. Zach Emerson ran a strong seventh as junior (19 and under) division champ, while Dave Dunham entered his first circuit race as a master and won the division. Nikki Kimball (CMS/Elizabethtown NY), running late after hitting a deer on the drive over, took the women's title over a solid mountaineering field. Kimball posted the 10th best time ever, pushed up the hill by masters course record holder Julie Peterson (8 seconds back) and Kelly Lusk (CMS - and Mrs. Paul Low) who wound up with third after Saturday's silver in the 12K. There were 204 finishers, and thanks go to CMS for keeping the event running after an uncertain future; co-director Barbara McManus had her own weekend double after racing the 12K on Saturday. The four race Mountain Series continues May 29 with 8 miles up Mt.Kearsarge in Warner NH; check the

Cross-country running,
Cross-country running, a popular intramural diversion at Princeton as early as 1880 when the Hare and Hounds Club was founded, began auspiciously as a varsity sport in 1899 with John Cregan 1899 winning the first intercollegiate championship meet ever held. Fitting sequels to Cregan's notable achievement came in 1914, when Donald Morrison '15 finished second in the IC4A Championships, and again after the First World War, when Princeton teams placed second in the Intercollegiates in 1919, 1920, and 1921, and won the first triangular meet with Harvard and Yale in 1922. In the thirties, Bill Bonthron '34 excelled, going undefeated his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. He and his classmate Charles M. Reed finished arm-in-arm in a first place tie in every dual meet their sophomore year. The 1937 team was undefeated and won the Big Three meet, in which its captain Frederic Rosengarten '38 placed first. After the interruption of World War II, Princeton cross-country reached a high point when the 1949 team went undefeated in dual meet competition, took the Big Three championship, and placed second in the Heptagonal cross-country championship meet.* That year's captain, Stan Johnson '50, won the triangular meet with Harvard and Yale for the third time in his varsity career. In the 1950s six Princeton harriers came in first in Big Three meets: Dick Snedeker '51 (1950), Al Pittis 52 (1951), Toby Maxwell '53 (1952), Jack Vodrey '57 (1954), Rod Zwirner '59 (1956), and Mike Kingston '62 (1959). Maxwell (who placed first in every dual meet his senior year) and Vodrey were second in the Heptagonals. Most successful of all was Zwirner, who as a sophomore won every dual meet and was also individual champion in the Heptagonals.

Foot Locker Nationals 12/13/03
I was fortunate enough to get down to Balboa Park this past Saturday to see America's elite high school runners. The girls race was at 9:15 and the boys race was at 10:00. The only 4 Americans to have ever run a sub-4 minute mile were all there, Jim Ryun, Tim Danielson, Marty Liquori, and Alan Webb. It really was a special event. Dan and I had a great time watching the races and getting our programs signed by some of the runners. Dan and Abdi Dan and Mohammed Trafeh See, I was actually there regional winners (some guy got in the way though) Foot Locker West Regionals 3 Californians in the top 10 (boys) and 6 of top 10 for the girls! Good luck to all of you running next weekend at the Footlocker Nationals. Hopefully i'll be there to cheer you on.
