Teaching and Learning Croquet Techniques International National People Laws ... Rankings It is tempting to compare croquet techniques to that of other ball sports. However two significant factors make croquet a unique challenge for both player and coach. Firstly, it uses a wider range of stroke-techniques than most sports. Like other ball games there are actions using a single ball, but there are also strokes which control the distance and directions of two touching balls. This stroke, the "croquet" stroke, fully exploits the game's potential for complex ball skills. Secondly, the balls and mallets are much heavier than the equipment for other ball sports. This must not be overlooked because croquet is a sport which not only requires both powerful and gentle strokes, but it is a game that should, and can, be enjoyed and contested on equal terms by both men and women with a very wide range of athletic ability. Therefore comparisons made between croquet techniques and the actions used in billiards, baseball, tennis or golf can be misleading. They are only useful in so far as they illustrate common principles of applying force and control in athletic movement. Let's look at some of the most basic of these.

Croquet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Croquet is a recreational game and, latterly, a competitive sport that involves hitting wooden or plastic balls with a mallet through hoops embedded into the grass playing arena. The game was apparently invented in Ireland in the and taken to England as a pastime of the aristocracy in the . It may have evolved from the earlier mallet and ball game pall mall . It made its way to the United States Australia , and France , and whilst never hugely popular has continued to maintain a substantial following. It was an event at the 1900 Summer Olympics Roque , an event at the 1904 Summer Olympics is believed to have been a variation. There are several variations of croquet played, differing in the scoring systems, order of shots, and layout (particularly in social games where play must be adapted to smaller-than-standard playing courts). The main competitive version played in the UK is Association Croquet, where players can take multiple shots in one turn provided while they either a) hit the ball through the correct hoop ("runs" a hoop), or b) hit another ball. Upon hitting another ball, the player must play his next shot with the two balls touching; the "Croquet Stroke", from which the game takes its name. The winner is the player who, with each of his balls, runs each hoop twice in order and strikes the centre peg. As long "breaks" (continuous play by one player) became more common as the standard of play improved, "Advanced Play" (a variant of association play for expert players) was introduced. This gave penalties to a player who ran certain hoops in the same turn. In response, feats of skill such as

Born on 6th september 1860 in Ballarat, Australia he became a self made millionaire confectionary manufacturer. In 1928 he financed an exploring expedition by motor vehicles which made the circuit of Australia. In 1929 he also financed a combined British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Expedition. His philanthropy continued in 1933 when he significantly funded the Melbourne Centenery Celebrations. He is remembered in the croquet world when he presented a silver mounted shield for International competition in 1925. He died on 20th August 1945.
At the time of its inaugeration in 1925, the only matches played at this level were between Australia and England . They were joined by New Zealand in 1930 although it was not until 1935 that all three countries competed for the trophy at the same time. A subtle change of name took place in 1979 when "England" became "Great Britain and Ireland" although they will revert to the title "Great Britain" in 1996. In 1993 the U.S.A. entered the competition for the first time.
