Glossary Alive: In American play, a ball which has cleared a wicket but has not roqueted another ball is alive on that ball. A striker becomes dead on a ball as soon as it hits it and receives a croquet shot and a continuation shot. If the strikers ball is dead on another ball and roquets that ball before deadness is cleared, the balls are replaced to their positions before the shot was made and the turn ends. In the British game, all balls are alive at the start of each players turn. All-Around Break: Running all the wickets in one turn. Angle of Divergence: Angle at which balls part when a croquet shot is made. (see: Newtonian Physics). Angle of Split: On a croquet shot, the angle between two lines, along which the two balls travel. see: Geometry). Apple: The name of the company that manufactured the machine the author used to write this book. Also, the object that fell on Newtons head that began his thinking on what has become known as Newtonian physics. An understanding of Newtonian physics is extremely helpful in understanding the movement of the balls as they are played during the game. Aunt Emma: A conservative player who wastes talent through dull and uninspired play. This player simply tries to advance from one wicket to the next.

Bob Musella, Thos Myers and Ron Usherwood "I quite agree with you," said the Duchess; "and the moral of that is `Be what you would seem to be' or, if you'd like it put more simply `Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.'" Lewis Carroll, "Alice in Wonderland"
"Contrariwise," continued Tweedledee, "if it was so, it might be, and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic!" Lewis Carroll, "Through the Looking Glass"
Here at the Pink Flamingo Lawn Croquet Association, we play International rule, 6 wicket croquet. Six wicket croquet is, of course, a twelve step program and fortunately the only twelve step program that the three main players have ever really needed. We have en'ticed' other people to the court, or greensward, if you prefer, and our main purpose is to have that most excellent game. In some situations, however, it has been necessary to play Extreme Croquet and there have been moments when we have thought all was lost. In one extreme situation we had to play by ear as it was too dark to see anything and the location of the court denied us lighting.

Not the largest section at PoloFarm Sports Club ... but as enthusiastic and persevering as you'll find - out in all weathers the year round.
Most people imagine croquet to be a simple game involving hitting a ball through a hoop in the garden. There is, however, another side to it. Played to Association Rules, it is transformed into a highly competitive sport which not only requires excellent eye-to-hand co-ordination but also a strong sense of tactical awareness.
There are now over 150 clubs in the Croquet Association which organises national and regional competitions. 18 countries are represented in The World Croquet Federation.
THE CLUB
The Club was founded in a garden in the village of Chartham Hatch in 1991. It moved to the Polo Farm site in 1996 where it now has two full-sized lawns and its own pavilion. Most of the activity is during the summer months but play is possible throughout the year.
THE GAME
There are two types of croquet. We play both at Polo Farm. Golf Croquet is the simpler game and is more suitable for less experienced players but it nevertheless has an enthusiastic following.

Origins and Ground Billiards
Mallet and ball games are thought to have been first played in England and Europe during the middle ages. Games would normally involve only one ball which would be struck through very wide hoops. A Croquet-like game is believed to have been played by thirteenth century French peasants who used crudely fashioned mallets to whack wooden balls balls through hoops made of willow branches. A variety of equipment has been found indicating that, as was typical, there were no standards and a variety of rules and types of game were in existence for several centuries. One type of game which this author calls Ground Billiards' featured a hoop and a stick, a point being scored for each time your ball was first through the hoop and onto hit the stick. At some point in the 15th century someone chose to invent an indoor variation of this played on a table which led to Billiards and that whole family of games

and hoops/rings? Mystery notwithstanding, from these medieval games sprang at least 4 modern distinct ancestors, all of which are still played today with varying degrees of popularity.

Croquet in Edinburgh
Croquet is a fascinating game, combining skill and tactics (not unlike those of snooker) with a pleasant outdoor setting. Here in Edinburgh there are two croquet clubs : the Edinburgh Club at Lauriston Castle - established in 1950 and still going strong - and the more recently arrived Meadows Club at the west end of the Meadows. Both clubs welcome new members and provide tuition for beginners. The picture shows the opening event of the season at Lauriston Castle on Saturday 19 April 2003, with 24 players taking part in doubles games on six half-size lawns.
