Summary
Croquet had the working name of Tea until recently. You will see many references to Tea in the system, in the code, and even in this document. Just assume that when you see Tea, we mean Croquet. Croquet was built to answer a simple question. If we were to create a new operating system and user interface knowing what we know today, how far could we go. What kinds of decisions would we make that we might have been unable to even consider 20 or 30 years ago, when the current set of operating systems were first created. The landscape of possibilities has evolved tremendously in the last few years. Without a doubt, we can consider Moore's law and the Internet as the two primary forces that are colliding like tectonic plates to create an enormous mountain range of possibilities. Since every existing OS was created when the world around it was still quite flat, they were not designed to truly take advantage of the heights that we are now able to scale. What is perhaps most remarkable about this particular question is that in answering it, we find that we are revisiting much of the work that was done in the early sixties and seventies that ultimately led to the current successful architectures. One could say that that in reality, this question was asked long ago, and the strength of the answer has successfully carried us for a quarter century. On the other hand, the current environments are really just the thin veneer over what even long ago were seriously outmoded approaches to development and design. Most of the really good fundamental ideas that people had were left on the cutting room floor.

OVERVIEW OF CROQUET IN AMERICA
FROM BACKYARD GAME TO WORLDCLASS SPORT
THE SPORT OF CROQUET was born in the British isles in the mid 19th century and soon migrated to most other English-speaking countries. In the United States, manufacturers popularized a version of the sport that could be played on rough turf with lightweight, inexpensive equipment. It is this lightweight, scaled-down, toy version of croquet which most Americans have either seen or played.
Croquet as a public sport suffered a setback in the 1890's when
the Boston clergy spoke out against the drinking, gambling, and
licentious behavior associated with it on the Common. The game of Backyard Croquet has maintained its popularity in America for more than a hundred years as the ideal complement of garden parties, family gatherings, outdoor fund-raisers, and social events both raucus and elegant. The more sophisticated sport of 6-wicket croquet, requiring heavier equipment, good lawns, and a more intense sporting attitude, though widely played in England and most Commonwealth countries, was rarely seen by Americans until the late 1970's. The United States Croquet Association was organized by Jack Osborn in 1977 with a nucleus of six east coast clubs. Osborn hammered out a codified set of rules for a uniquely American variety of 6-wicket croquet and tirelessly promoted formation of local clubs and tournaments throughout the country. Today, as many as 10,000 men and women play this elegant and exacting sport on more than 600 greens in the U.S. and Canada.

    History
Although croquet is a rather young sport, its ancestry can be traced at least to the 14th century, and there are a couple of stories about how it originated. One is that lawn bowlers developed an indoor form of their sport to be played during the winter, adding hoops and mallets to make the game more challenging on the much smaller playing area. This indoor version of lawn bowling then moved back outdoors and become known in France as paille-maille ("ball-mallet"). The other is that paille-maille was originally a form of outdoor billiards. However, judging by what scanty documentation there is, billiards seems to have come along about a century later. It's quite possible that the movement went the other waythat paille-maille moved indoors and become billiards. In any event, the sport existed for several centuries without becoming particularly popular. Scottish golfers seem to have taken it up, possibly as a kind of practice, during the 16th century and, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1604, he brought paille-maille equipment as well as golf clubs to his new court. Played during the 17th century by Charles II and his courtiers at St. James's Park in London, the name of the game was anglicized to Pall Mall, which also became the name of a nearby street. "Mall" then turned into a generic word for any street used for public strolls. And now, of course, it usually refers to an enclosed area where people stroll from store to store.

    • Rules for 9 wicket croquet
Similar to those above, except these rules were taken from the USCA website. American version.

These three rules are some minor adjustments of the regular rules for tournament backyard play.
    • One-Ball Croquet
For casual play, the One-Ball variant can be introduced to allow up to six players.
    • Playing rules for 10 wicket croquet
The 10 wicket game is almost identical to the 9 wicket game, but a tenth wicket is added to form a double wicket. These rules are the "house rules" I usually play.
    • Alternative set of American Rules
I found this set of rules somewhere on the web, but there are some oddities in them. Feel free to use them, but beware of small errors.
