From time to time the sport has been pursued by various nations against various animals, but the recognized method has generally been the coursing of the hare by greyhounds. Such sport is of great antiquity, and is fully described by Arrian in his Cynegeticus about AD. 150, when the leading features appear to have been much the same as in the present day. Other Greek and Latin authors refer to the sport; but during the middle ages it was but little heard of. Apart from private coursing for the sake of filling the pot with game, public coursing has become an exhilarating sport. The private sportsman seldom possesses good strains of blood to breed his greyhounds from or has such opportunities of trying them as the public courser. A comparative trial of two dogs, and not the capture of the game pursued, is the great distinctive trait of modern coursing. A greyhound stud-book was started in 1882. Our goal as guardians of the breed is to preserve functional ability, unmistakable breed type, native intelligence, and depth of character. Sharon Walls has been owned by salukis since 1977. She works as a Fiscal Coordinator for a Mental Health agency in order to maintain the standard of living to which her hounds have become accustomed. Her other interests include bellydancing, homebrewing, collecting cacti, studying Middle Eastern cultures, and playing with the Society for Creative Anachronism. Mark Heddleston married into salukis in 1994. He brings with him one schipperke, Champion Ebonystar Drambuie. He is a programmer, software engineer, tech support specialist, and computer operator. The purpose of this webpage is to celebrate the joy that Becca the Whippet (Queenie's Wave Runner, ARM, SORCII, ARX, FCh, FD) has brought into my life! Of all things, I thought I would always be a one-whippet human, but alas...I just had to have a full sister to Becca, i.e., Macy a/k/a FC Queenie's Tidal Wave, CRXIII, FCh, ARX, SC! The girls' pedigree can be viewed by clicking here Pedigree In 1997, Becca won the Racing Bitch class at the National Specialty in Atlanta, and became an ASFA Field Champion (FCh) in April, 1997 at her fifth trial with 3 thirds and 2 BOB's. Becca also repeated as the JRRWA Versatility Champion in Delaware. I have included a photo of her posing at the Specialty with Joanne Stewart's Diablo (Lookout Lamborghini Diablo, FCh, winner of the Racing Dog class), and of her Specialty win. In spite of missing almost the entire second half of the year due to a toe injury (at which time she was #1 overall NOTRA in the country), my baby girl finished the year again #3 in NOTRA and #1 NOTRA bitch, earning her SORCII. I'm not a proud mommy, am I Left is Becca and Right is Macy Several months after an early '98 surgery on her toe, Becca was working her way back to getting to chase the bunny again and suffered a slipped disc in her back (which I've since learned, though fairly rare, has occurred with younger whippets and more often with older whippets). Though thankfully she made a complete recovery, Becca was retired from racing and other athletic competition because no matter how much of a fluke it may have been, I would never risk a reinjury by putting her in the same situation again. Just having her in my life is the most precious thing. :-)

Agility Obedience Lure Coursing Trials ... Find a Show What is Lure Coursing and why do dogs love doing it? The answer is quite simple. The equipment used is quite simple and consists of 300 metres of fishing line strung around several pulleys set into the ground to form the course. A plastic bag is tied to the line and is powered around the pulleys by a battery-operated motor. The operator can stop the lure at any time and can change direction as well. For those dogs that regularly attend, we have developed a system of thin pipes, which the lure will go through and then stop inside. The dogs will then frantically search for where it has gone by sniffing the ground, looking in the pipes or try to look under the pipe. The lure can either proceed through the pipe or can reverse and trick the dogs by coming out of the opposite end. The smaller dogs endeavour to put their heads in the end of the pipes to see where the lure has gone, while the bigger dogs just try and flip the pipes over. Others will cut the corners and wait for the lure to come to them. Little do they know that the operator will stop and reverse the lure. The chase is then on once again. This is a sight to behold and every dog owner is encouraged to give his or her dog the opportunity to prove his or her skill at this sport. Words cannot describe the expressions on owners' faces when they see their dogs stride out in full flight and chase the lure. Even if they don't run the whole course it doesn't matter. It is not competitive and is used to give your dogs a fun activity and an easy way for you to exercise them.

Lure Coursing Lure coursing is a fun sport for all the sighthound breeds, including Whippets. It is designed to simulate a rabbit or hare hunt in an open field without the actual killing of live game. An artificial lure (actually white plastic trash bags!) on a strong line is pulled through a series of pulleys by a lure machine. The lure operator is able to control the speed of the lure so that it is always kept in front of the coursing hounds. Hounds run in groups of two or three and are distinguished from each other by the brightly colored blankets they wear. Most course plans call for hounds to run distances of 600 to 1000 yards, including several tight turns and long straightaways. Judges watch the course and score the hounds for their overall ability, speed, agility, endurance, enthusiasm, and willingness to closely follow the path of the lure throughout the course. Any hound who shows aggression to his running mates, or who physically interferes with them during the course, is disqualified from further running. All hounds run at least twice, and their cumulative scores determine where they place relative to each other. At the end of the trial, ribbons and prizes are awarded. Some placements result in points toward field championships. Two organizations sponsor lure coursing trials and award titles. The American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) awards to its successful hounds, the Field Championship (F.Ch.), and to its most elite coursers, the Lure Courser of Merit (LCM). The American Kennel Club awards the Junior Courser title (JC) to hounds who demonstrate a desire to chase the lure, the Senior Courser title (SC) to hounds who have run four times in competition without being disqualified, the Master Courser (MC) to those who have qualified 25 times, and the AKC Field Championship (F.Ch.) to those who are top competitors in coursing.
