Back to top AN INTRODUCTORY GUIDE TO GREYHOUND COURSING Origin 1. The greyhound originated in the Ancient East and references to coursing in that area go back some 4,000 years. Coursing, and coursing dogs, are depicted on the walls of Egyptian tombs and on ancient Greek urns. Coursing was popular in Britain by the first century BC, and anthropologists calculate that the brown hare arrived in Britain from Europe at the same time, imported for coursing purposes. Vases discovered near Hadrians Wall in the first century AD show dogs identical to modern greyhounds coursing hares. In AD 116 Flavius Arianus, a Roman living in Gaul, wrote: "The true sportsman does not take out his dogs to destroy the hares, but for the sake of the course ... and is glad if the hare escapes." The same rule holds true today. 2. The Duke of Norfolk drew up the first uniformly accepted rules of coursing for Queen Elizabeth I, and coursing grew in popularity over the centuries, enjoying its zenith in the period 1880-1914. The principal event, the Waterloo Cup, first run in 1836, drew crowds of up to 80,000 at the turn of the century.

  • Introduction One of the most enjoyable past times that a Deerhound owner can share with her hound is the sport of lure coursing. Lure coursing was developed in California in the early 1970s as a way to allow sighthounds to use their hunting skills without chasing live game. The dogs, in pairs or trios, chase an artificial lure (usually a white plastic bag) over a set course plan and are judged in the following categories: enthusiasm, follow, speed, agility and endurance. The title "Field Champion" can be earned when your dog has obtained a certain combination of placements and points competing against others of her breed. This article is not intended to go into a detailed description of lure coursing, rather it is meant to give the reader advice on selecting, raising and training a Scottish Deerhound for lure coursing. There is an excellent lure coursing FAQ written by Bonnie Dalzell that should answer any questions about the sport in general.

    http://www.users.daelnet.co.uk/lurchers/this_is_coursing 2.htm
This is Coursing The Hares C oursing is one of the world's oldest field sports. Since the days of the Pharoahs "gazehounds", dogs which hunt exclusively by sight, have been tested in competition. Arrian, a Roman writing in AD 116, laid down: "The true sportsman does not take out his dogs to destroy the hares, but for the sake of the course and the contest between the dogs and the hares, and is glad if the hare escapes." His words are just as relevant today. A 11 coursing under National Coursing Club Rules takes place in open country. The wild brown hares are at liberty on their own territory and the fields are not enclosed in any way which would prevent the hares I escape. Beaters, in the same way as for game shooting, drive the hares' one by one on to the running ground. A lternatively, as in rough shooting, the hares are put up by the company walking across the fields to be coursed over. T he hares are not released from boxes, nor are they caught up afterwards. G ame Conservancy research has shown that on estates where coursing takes place, hare numbers are increasing against the national trend. Habitat is carefully preserved, the farming regime is sympathetically modified, and there is no shooting of hares, the most significant factor in the encouragement of hare numbers.

For people interested in learning more about open field coursing, following is some information about what attending a hunt is like, followed by a description of a hypothetical hunt. When preparing for OFC the first thing to consider is conditioning of the hound and the handler. Hunts can last all day, and you will probably walk at least 5 miles and possibly over 10 miles. The hound must walk this far and also run one or two times. Courses very greatly; some are short, while some can go well over a mile. As a handler, you carry everything you might need for yourself and your hound during the day; water, first aid supplies, slip leads, blankets, and any extra clothes and food you might want. Often you won't return to your car until the hunt is over. For Borzoi you need to bring a lot of water and if it's hot you'll need even more. We carry between 1 qt. to 1/2 gallon per dog. Both open field organizations (NACA and NOFCA) have a 2 hound per handler limit. You can't put your hounds back in the car right after they run, and if there are too many hounds per handler, holding and slipping dogs can become a logistical nightmare. Travel time to the hunts can be tiring for both hounds and handlers. Unless you are lucky enough to live close, travel can take as much as 2 days. There can be hounds from several states at a hunt. Dogs usually sleep all day. At a hunt, there is the travel time to the event, and also the dog is awake all day during the event. There isn't opportunity to rest between courses as there is at a lure coursing event.

    Sherwood Basenjis
About Sherwood Basenjis Sherwood Basenjis began in April 1991 with the purchase of a stubborn little red/white female Basenji puppy named Keiko (Tennasa's Keiko Kantu, F.Ch., C.G.C.). Keiko was supposed to be my first "show dog" but apparently, no one ever told her that. You see, Keiko didn't like the show ring and, being exceptionally bright, she would find many amusing ways (amusing to her anyway) to embarrass me in the show ring until I finally gave up and "retired" her after earning only a few minor points. Since the show ring was something of a bust, I sought out a new hobby with Keiko......lure coursing. Now THIS was fun! Keiko really enjoyed lure coursing but being "blessed" with the speed of a turtle with a broken leg and the ability to turn with the agility of a speeding locomotive, Keiko could never quite keep up with her competitors so she quickly learned to "cheat" by heading off her runningmates and waiting at the finish line for the lure to come to her. Clever yes, but "cheating" doesn't impress the judges. Despite her creative running style, Keiko became my first ASFA Field Champion. Keiko was bred once and produced 3 AKC conformation Champions and 1 ASFA Field Champion in her only litter. Keiko was spayed and retired from competition and then spent many years as my official bed warmer where she earned the affectionate nickname of "the Speedbump" due to her habit of "hogging" the bed! Keiko's daughter Dallas (Ch. Sherwood's Restless Heart) became the primary base for my breeding program and my "line" is being developed through Dallas' children and grandchildren.

George Jones and Charles Clover. Tony Blair was facing open revolt in the Labour Party last night over a compromise proposal to allow foxhunting under certain conditions. Labour MPs described as a fudge the new Hunting Bill which would outlaw hare coursing and stag hunting in England and Wales but would let foxhunting continue if it were given the goahead by an independent registrar. Ratting and rabbiting with dogs would also be allowed.

HARE COURSING THE WATERLOO CUP FAACE has been very much involved with the subject of hare coursing, in particular the Waterloo Cup. Since it's formation FAACE has taken part and been involved in the organisation of the yearly demonstration against the Waterloo Cup. The Waterloo Cup is the so-called blue riband event of the coursing calendar. FAACE has organised Press conferences and anti-hare coursing forums involving MPs, MEPs and prominent people from the area such as the actor Ricky Tomlinson. In 1999 FAACE arranged for the first aerial demonstration against the Waterloo Cup. This was a great moral booster for the antis and a source of much annoyance to the coursers. In very simple terms hare coursing is the setting of greyhounds onto a hare. This event takes place at Altcar, near Formby and about seven miles from FAACE headquarters.

The kennel name is also registered with the German Kennel Club and Federation Canine International (FCI) to Ed & Johanna Granger. The kennel name means "Night Music" in German and we have been blessed with wonderful night music from our international family. Together, Johanna and I have over 60 years experience with our beloved chosen breed. Both Johanna and I ran boarding kennels and grooming businesses in the Maritimes of Canada and met through dog shows. We competed against one another in the show ring and in 1989 combined our talents and became man and wife. I was living in Germany at the time and Johanna joined me shortly after the wedding. We enjoyed showing, racing and coursing Afghan Hounds in many countries of Europe until our return to Canada in 1995. Since returning to Canada Ottawa Canada We showed in Denmark Belgium Holland France Germany Switzerland Austria Italy Yugoslavia Croatia and Slovenia and were known as the "crazy Canadians." The title was earned from traveling far and wide in various weather conditions to dog shows and racing/lure coursing events. Something that is common place here but not done in Europe by the majority of the dog owners. The majority of Europeans still class dog shows, racing and other events as a hobby. The enjoyment and camaraderie are obvious at dog shows in various countries. North American attitudes have taken hold on dogdom in

LURE coursing. The sport of Lure coursing gives the Irish Wolfhound (and other sighthound) owners the luxury of seeing poetry in motion.
    http://www.sunstag.org/hound/pages/lure_coursing.html
    L URE C OURSING
New: 19 Mar 97 // Rev: Oct 2001 ( Brag Below) The sport of Lure Coursing gives the Irish Wolfhound (and other sighthound) owners the luxury of seeing poetry in motion. The hounds spring, run, turn, twist in a simulation of the actions their ancestors used to catch live game. This is what our hounds were bred to do. It adds to the bond between human and hound just as it did ages ago when they hunted together for food and survival. True, the modern hound must chase an artificial lure on a string, but they obviously don't care! Just a chance to get out into the open field and run is all they ask of us...to see the double suspension gallop in action! [Note: This link is a slow motion animation demonstrating the "all-four-off-the ground" gallop.]
What a way to motivate ourselves to keep the hounds in condition! The hound will be trim and muscular; their heart and lungs and circulation in top shape. We know how many years we can add by keeping personally fit in our own lives; imagine what we are doing for our hounds. Our Irish Wolfhound needs to show its functionality not just be a friendly, loving couch potato. More and more it is becoming obvious that lure coursing can help us extend the lifespan of our beloved hounds.
To get started write to the American Kennel Club, Performance Events, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010 for a list of clubs near you. They will also send you a brochure on Lure Coursing. Just ask for it. Also, requests can be made on-line to the AKC [
