Coursing will not be banned if peers have their way Peers have "arrogantly" defied public opinion by rejecting a ban on hare coursing, an anti-hunt campaigner has claimed.
Mike Hobday, of the League Against Cruel Sports, said a House of Lords decision rejecting a ban had killed any hope of compromise on the government's Hunting Bill. The latest vote came a week after peers rejected an overwhelming call made by MPs in the summer for an outright ban on hunting with dogs. Instead the Lords backed allowing hunting to continue under licence. Now the Upper House has voted by 129 to 59 to remove the part of the bill that would outlaw hare coursing. Environment Minister Lord Whitty accused peers of "destroying the basis" of the bill. Benefits? With parliamentary time running out next month, the bill is not expected to become law but anti-hunt campaigners hope the government will force it through in the next session using the Parliament Act. Labour's Lord Faulkner said: "Hare coursing is a practice that needs to be outlawed."

Breeding dogs to show and participate in lure coursing. Photographs and links.
http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Zoo/8211
The Ibizan Hound is a sighthound whose game is primarily rabbits, this ancient hound has been bred for thousands of years with function being of utmost importance. Ibizan Hounds possess a deer-like elegance with the strength of a true hunter.
Ibizan Hounds are excellent companions, out going playful pets, and loyal friends. They make great watchdogs without being aggressive to those entering your house, their powerful bark is enough warning for any intruder to take heed.
They are extremely even-tempered and adapt well into the life style of their owners. Being very versatile, they always "give it their all" either as the family dog, out on the coursing field or in the show, obedience and agility ring.
First and foremost the dogs of Luxor are our beloved family members. Our dogs are bred only to preserve this invaluable breed, never for profit. We are very selective when breeding. That is why there is usually only one litter born every two years, at most. When breeding we try our very best to maintain this breeds natural appearance and hunting abilities.
By obtaining show and lure coursing titles we not only have fun with our dogs but we put their form and function to the test so we may breed better dogs in the future.

Greyhounds
Illumination from "The Book of the Hunt" by Gaston Phoebus, Count of Foix (15th century) What is hound coursing?
Coursing is an ancient and noble sport that allows one to witness the beauty of a sight hound doing what it was bred for.
In the Middle Ages, a rabbit was released in a field and the hounds were then released after it. Eventually rules were established, which in turn led to the modern day dog track. In the SCA we use an artificial lure (generally a plastic bag) attached to a string, run through a series of pulleys, and driven by a hand crank or electric motor. Obviously the history of coursing is more complicated than this. We invite you to join us and learn more.

Original British Coursing Rules by Duke of Norfolk
  • That he that is chosen Fewterer, or that lets loose the Greyhounds, shall receive the Greyhounds matched to run together, into his Leash as soon as he comes into the field, and follow next to the hare-finder, or he who is to start the hare until he come under form; and no horseman of footman is to go before, or on any side, but directly behind, for the space of about forty yards. You ought not to course a hare with more than a brace of Greyhounds. The hare-finder ought to give the hare three so-ho's before he puts her from her form or seat, that the dogs may gaze about and attend her starting. Twelve score yards law ought to be given before the dogs are loosed, unless there be danger of losing her. The dog that gives the first turn, if after that there be neither cote, slip, nor wrench, wins the wager. If the dog gives the first turn and the other bears the hare, he that bears the hare shall win. A go-by, or bearing the hare, is equivalent to two turns. If neither dog turns the hare, he that leads last to the covert wins.

Never you mind that we sang the extra "come on pretty baby"s a little too early, we still rocked the house. ABOUT US CONTACT US CRUEL SPORTS - INVESTIGATIONS ... Others Hare Coursing
The aim of hare coursing is for two dogs (usually greyhounds) to compete against each other in a test of speed, determination and agility in pursuit of a live hare. The terrified hares are made to run for their lives to provide 'entertainment'. The hare coursing season runs from 15th September to 10th March. As in hare hunting, it does not end until after the first litters of the year are born.
There are three basic types of hare coursing:
    1) Static coursing in which hares are driven onto a particular field by beaters.
    2) 'Walk-up' or 'rough' coursing in which a line of coursers and supporters walk across countryside flushing out hares as they proceed.
    3) 'Park' or 'enclosed' coursing in which hares are caught and held captive to be released from a holding pen into an enclosed arena in which there are gaps for hares to escape into another secure area. This takes place in Northern Ireland and Eire. In each form of coursing the purpose is to test the dogs which pursue the hare as soon as it comes into sight. The two dogs are held back by a man called a 'slipper' who waits until the hare has approximately an 80 yard start, before releasing them. Unlike 'pack' hunting, the dogs used in coursing are faster than the hare and soon make up the distance - the first dog to reach the hare being awarded up to three points depending on its lead over the other dog.

The Facts About Hare coursing. Hare coursing involves the terrorising of one animal by another and is full of unnecessary cruelty and killing.
    http://www.banbloodsports.com/leaf-coursing.htm
The Facts About Hare Coursing Hare coursing involves the terrorising of one animal by another and is full of unnecessary cruelty and killing. Two forms of coursing are practised in Ireland - enclosed coursing and open coursing. Both involve the use of a hare as a live lure. Every year, coursing subjects thousands of hares to stress, injury and death. In 1993, the government, responding to public concern over this killing, agreed that the slaughter of hares in coursing could not continue. Under political pressure, the Irish Coursing Club (the governing body in coursing) were forced to muzzle greyhounds at enclosed coursing meetings. Greyhounds used in open coursing still remain unmuzzled, however. The hare is protected under the 1976 Wildlife Act but the same act also protects hare coursing, i.e. it is illegal to trap or sell hares other than for the specific purpose of coursing them About a month before each meeting, club members go into the countryside to collect hares in a process known as "netting". This involves a gang of supporters shouting and yelling to herd hares into nets which have been strategically placed. The hares are then put into boxes for transport to the coursing venue. This netting and handling is in itself cruel and hares, being timid and delicate creatures, often die or are injured as a result. The next stage in the vicious circle of coursing cruelty is to train the hares. Releasing a wild animal into a coursing field would produce what coursing supporters would see as very poor "sport" since the hare wouldn't know where to run. Prior the coursing event, therefore, club officials subject the hares to training sessions to familiarise the hares with the field and to teach them to run up the centre of the field as is required for "good coursing".
